The 'D' word reduces the league's status to junior racing and not Third Tier speedway. I suggest the clubs get this sorted out in regard to the "D" word at their forthcoming AGM.

I doubt they shall need to. Despite the spurious reference in the Rulebook they've never used the expression 'NDL' on any of the PRs or on their website since 2009 and I can think of no reason why the BSPA would suddenly choose to do so now..

What's spurious about said reference? Are you inferring that it's false / bogus / fake / forged and others which are all synonyms for said word?

What's spurious about it is that it's only ever been in the rule book that the 'Development' tag has been given to the name of the division. The competition names have always been straight National League, National Trophy etc.; league tables, fixture lists, the BSPA website, all PRs issued by the BSPA etc. - none of these have EVER referred to the National League as anything other than as the National League.

So the tag 'Development' has no reality outside of those two or three pages in the Rulebook. Indeed unless you're sad people like us who get to be sent a copy of the Rulebook, you could have been an NL fan since 2009 and not even know that anyone had ever even suggested that there might be this 'Development' word floating around at all!!

In terms of definition of the word ('spurious' NOT 'development'!) try, "Lacking validity in essence"...!

The rules under which all league matches on licensed tracks ran last season, as has been pointed out to you Derek, were freely available to all via the SCB website at: http://www.scbgb.co.uk/ but never mind, for this thread is about the possibility of Plymouth entering a side in said league so let's get back to that eh?

If this comes to pass, it has got to be great news for every young speedway rider in the South West.

Does it matter whether the team are called Plymouth Demons/Devils/Sailors/Monkeys or whatever?

So long as young people get the opportunity to display their talents at a track that doesn't cost a mortgage to travel to, then that is all that matters.

Good Luck to Plymouth for even considering the idea, I hope to be travelling to watch Stoke and Buxton ride there soon.

More British tracks, more British riders has to be the way forward.

So it's happening then, us devils (or whatever we'll be called) have a NL team. I as a fan am delighted with the news because i believe the promotion are finally thinking about the future with Plymouth and investing in better young British riders. Who do i think will ride for us? DAVID ABRAHAM (the mascot) i'd imagine will get a position within the 1-7. BEN READE will be a certainty for me, prepare him for PL life. CONNOR COLES will probably get a place within the 1-7 aswell. If they are sticking to their guns of young local british talent for the future then those 3 will be involved. It wouldn't suprise me to see people like PAUL STARKE, LEE SMART, JAMES COCKLE those sort of Ex Devils return aswell............ Exciting times ahead for the Devils or whatever they'll be called

Great to see Plymouth investing in a 'junior' set up which will hopefully have some of the success Scunthorpe have enjoyed in developing their own.

While I think this side should be used for youngster to get track time we do also need to be competitive in some way. So for me two bigger hitters with five youngsters would do me.

I'd be shocked if asset Ben Reade wasn't leading the side. Conor Coles has also been linked and I'd like to see the two lads who rode in the Tony Samford memorial given a shot - Sam Chapman and Harvie Banks I believe. Both Nathan and Danny Stoneman also have Plymouth connections so could also be involved. Lee Smart wouldn't go down badly as the other experienced rider whilst Matt Bates, who has done a lot of positive things to keep the Exeter flag flying may also be involved. I'd also welcome a return to the shale for Josh Dingle as he showed massive promise a few seasons back.

So plenty of local links and plenty of youngsters around!

If they have signed all 6 (Not doubting, but obviously waiting until official) then that could be interesting. Smart isn't the rider he once was, and Reade is coming off a nasty injury last season. They would need a number 1 (Maybe Tim Webster?) but I guess for Plymouth the idea is to develop for their PL team!

Speedway Star suggested it's Tim Webster, yes.

It's good to see Plymouth are to have a team in the National League in 2014. Expansion of leagues at any level is to be welcomed.

But I cannot say the team name Devon Demons appeals to me personally. I would have preferred to have seen the city name of Plymouth - and the side as Plymouth Devils. I like to see city or town names used - a county name seems rather too wide a scope to me. But a warm welcome all the same to another team in the west country.

EDIT: That should read as Plymouth DEMONS and not as Plymouth Devils. Sorry! See the following Posts.

I'm having doubts about the name. It just doesn't roll off the tongue. I would have liked Plymouth in the title, maybe Plymouth Falcons or Plymouth Demons. But it looks we are stuck with it so will have to get used to it I suppose. There again we could always miss out the Devon bit and just callthem the Demons.

You're obviously not quite awake yet JH because I'll think you'll find that the club's PREMIER League side are called the Plymouth Devils! Go grab a cuppa!

Well spotted Bryn. That's what comes of early morning visits to the BSF. That should have been Demons for the NL side not the Devils. Now where's the kettle...?

So it appears Danny Stoneman and James Shanes are going to be in Demons colours for 2014 from the club website.

On the Facebook page it also states Lee Smart, Ben Reade, Matt Bates and Richard Andrews will be in the side.

Pretty useful side being put together there!

Well yes, maybe in general terms (personally I never understood why when Speedway opened at the Arena Essex Raceway in 1984 they called the club by the venue name and not by the town it was in...) but personally I prefer a different main name for a 'second team'.

The example I liked was 'Bournemouth' when Poole ran an NL side. It makes it easier to 'spin' I think as a different side than calling both teams Plymouth...
