Bbc Sports Personality Of The Year

Recommended Posts

You're completely right, who better to be the face of speedway than Nicki Pedersen?

He has so many brilliant qualities it is hard to pick a favourite. What is your favourite quality in Nicki? Is it his swearing? spitting? aggressive behavior? track side tantrums? shouting at his own pit crew? helmet and goggle throwing? provocative attitude? dirty riding? Or do you just like his big hair dryer? ;)

What ever it is, he puts bums on seats, which is what Marketing folk like you are supposed to do, innit.

What a firkin joke. Speedway is a minority sport big time - and whilst woffy done real good, hardly worthy of a uk sports personality !

Speedway bosses should be spending their time and money sorting out their own sport rather than criticising the bbc.

Time to get real guys .

really think tsunami may need medication..yet again, he not only following my posts, hes now including me in other peoples posts!..check his last comment "bring the masses back to speedway"..GET REAL.....you really think domestic speedway can get masses on terraces, when theres only 2nd rate riders left?....reckon you were the type of person who thought sky tv would save this sport!.......its run by clowns, until double point rides, guest riders, doubling ups, are rmoved and promoters promte and QUALITY line ups appear, the word MASS will never happen......its not us fans you should get knarked at, its promoters who has made such useless moves who have dragged this sport in the gutter..just cos we moan, don't mean we don't like speedway, we moan cos we can actually see how its been ruined!!

It was you that 'liked' the post not me.

Yes i did.

With your few posts so far, I have yet to see you approve of anything. Dropping others in with 'stories' about fiddling, disrespecting anything Louis, etc, your not exactly a guy the sport needs back if the ask me. This forum just seems like i vehicle for you to vent your spleen on, and get back on old scores. Sad man.

It not about dismissing a sport, but actually determining whether it qualifies as one in the first place. I actually quite like darts, but the generally accepted definition of sport is competitive physical activity.

There are some exceptions like bridge and chess that are recognised as sports by the IOC, but darts isn't amongst them. Okay, that's not the be-all and end-all of whether something is a sport or not, but I think darts is a marginal call despite it drawing big audiences.

In that case you have dismissed golf as well.

Archery another.

Only pedants even question whether these events are sport.

Darts is a GAME - everyone knows that. It isn't a Sport. Sportsmen are supposed to FIT - not FAT.  :blink:

No, it is a sport.

A sport that to be succesful at you have to train/practice for hours on end on a regular basis. Phil Taylor is the epitomy of dedication to his sport and has been so for a vast period of time.

Have to agree ,least of BSPA worries,Tai had done Speedway proud but on reality he probably isn't in the Top Ten in BBC sports, after all it is called BBCSports Personality of the Year?

A bit pedantic. Whatever TV company was sponsoring an event like this they would put the company name: if others did it could be Sky, Channel 4 or whatever. Still I suppose some see it as fun to dig at the BBC. I doubt there would have been a comment like this if Tai Woffinden had been selected for the Top 10 list?

look, we never gonna see eye to eye....the "story" as you put it is actually fact..Ipswich speedway has a man letting 2 people in on 1 click of the turnstile..fact....he charges 1 and half and pocket the half..fact..you want clubs bein ripped off up to you. why would that bother me?..i purchased j. Louis trophy at save our speedway,is that a anti Louis statement?..as for this forum, don't get deluded in that you gonna attract just 1 person to speedway, its only a megre select on here who went/go speedway..anyone who disagree with you is wrong or has a vendetta..i say once more, this is an opinion site, not the tsunami autobiography!

Where does this fit into a debate about BBC Sports Personality Of The Year?

Your opinion, but for the BSPA to get involved in such trivial event is a joke IMO .Just ask the bookies who has won ,it's a non event and really can't be taken seriously.Tai has already appeared on TV with his bike that's all the publicity the sport is going to benefit from.No disrespect to Tia is intended as it was a fine achievement. Its a night out for 500people of which 499 are there on sufferance only as there glum faces show. You've shown disrespect by once again calling him 'Tia'. Nullifies the rest of your observations.

As for '500' people.. try 12,000.

Just read the BSPA statement on the website. Pointless complaining, unless it ensures Tai gets a decent 30 second slot during the programme (which I always said was the best we could hope for).

A question I would ask the BSPA though is what have they done to involve the BBC in recent years? For example, did they buy a box at Cardiff and invite BBC Sports editors to be their guests? Did they send a press pack all about Tai after he became World Champion? Did they offer to help the BBC to arrange for Tai to take his bike into the SPOTY studio for a feature? Lots of proactive ways to get the media involved, but call me a cynic, I am guessing none of those were done. If the answer to those is a yes, then fair enough for them to be peeved.

When Clubs in our Elite league are averaging well below 1,000 fans, it's hardly going to register on the list of top sports in the UK, away from the Speedway Star and this Forum, the sport is well and truly a minority sport.

Just have to face facts, Speedway is finished as a major player in Sport, and the BSPA have now driven it even further down the drain, by trying to con the Public into paying the same money for a far lesser product, they'll all be bringing out the begging bowls, come next winter.

And please, don't give me the ' we're helping young British riders for the future', they've never given a monkeys about them, unless the average fits, or they're cheap, now it's both.

There's another British world champion the SPOTY ignored:

"

GRAND PRIX MIDGET CAR RACING:::

flag2.gif27 August 2013 - Jonathan Pooley's World Title

Hearty congratulations to Jonathan Pooley who won this year's World Championship race at Hednesford on Sunday. Gordon Pooley was second with Dave Bonser third and Daniel Pooley in fourth making it a 1-2-3-4 for the Scorpian chassis.

Oh dear ,that's a shame just ignore my observations then.

What are you observations?

You've mentioned someone called Tia, I know of no speedway riders by that name.. and mentioned an awards event with 500 people in attendance..

Neither of them are what is being discussed on this thread and seem to be figments of your imagination.

Whatever your view on what constitutes a sport those included in the BBC list all have prominent media, especially TV exposure on the major networks.

Sports such as sailing and the paralympics do benefit from rather significant TV coverage, even if only every four years in the main.

Tell the average person that Tai is a speedway racer and most would ask which car he drives, I suspect.

Speedway simply has a low profile, even amongst other minority sports and that's where the real problem lies.

Irrelevant ranting in attempt at another pop at the BSPA. There are plenty of threads to do that one and I have done it often enough.. however it becomes rather tiresome when the same old drivel is spouted on threads that have nothing to do with that.

The rants about minority sport hold no credence as sailing is one of the sports listed.

Sailing is huge! Over 1,500 Clubs and something like 2 million plus adults are/have been involved in sailing activities. Speedway doesn't even touch on those numbers.

One thing we should perhaps remember is that the contenders for SPOTY were selected by a panel which contained four BBC employees and the other eight from a mixed bunch of sporting people from different backgrounds. So the fault, if there is one in Tai not being selected is not just at the BBC, or the BSPA, it is much more due to the low profile of speedway in general. That is the problem which needs to be tackled. So, when the new season is under way it may be time to write a nice polite letter to your daily newspaper of choice complaining of the lack of speedway coverage. If enough people complain the Press do listen. Remember the Express column some years ago by Nigel Pearson. That was due to a campaign by a group of fans of which I was pleased to be a member. Unfortunately the Express column came to a sticky end when the newspaper was taken over by Richard Desmond.
