Guest
Really? Tai has got his World Champion medal and trophy. I'm sure people won't be looking in 20 years time at who won SPOTY in 2013 They could remember this year's SPOTY in much the same way as the one in the 1960s that many feel Barry Briggs was robbed of. John Leslie
We're not talking about 'around the world'. We're talking about the UK. How many people watched it in the UK? Absolutely! Yachting has to be the most stupid nomination of all. For 3 years and 11 months out of every 4 years no one takes a blind bit of notice of sailing. Then the Olympics come round, and one morning a commentator tells us that Phillippa Farquharson-Smyth and her crew have set off on their Olympic yachting race,,,,three days later, the commentator returns to tell us that Pippa has won a gold medal.....no one has watched anything, no one cares really, but we celebrate because the BBC tell us this is great and we must celebrate and wave the Union Jack. Anyway, quite a few Tai comments on the BBC website now http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/sports-personality/25017298 Very easy to register and leave a comment...or just thumbs up the existing comments I see Tai himself has commented on twitter saying "ah well, at least I got an invite"

Not sure you tell me ...I remember THE Sailing being on every major news station in the uk the next day and in every newspaper in the days to follow not only in the sport pages but also the news pages ..How about Tai ? I wonder if we went into town tomorrow and ask people who Tai was and who Ben was what would happen ..you could ask 500 people who Tai was and not one would know all the other hand Ben is well known by the British Public .

I think as the saying goes you have correctly hit the nail on the head in regard to the publicity for sailing. It did seem to be constantly taking place on TV at the time. bill94d
I'm old enough to remember this going on in the 60s with Barry Briggs. Shame but it does not take away anything from woffy s achievement.
Parsloes 1928 nearly
Well let's look at the ten... Murray - won Wimbledon. Certain winner of SPOTY '14 Farah: double world championship - for a second year running gonna be the best contender NOT to win SPOTY Froome: a magnificent achievement to win the Tour De France, especially as in truth he would have won the year before and entered immortality other than for 'team orders' that said Wiggins had to win. I'd expect the top 3 to be Murray, Mo & Froome. McCoy: BBC love a jockey - in truth it's his whole career being recognised not a single year but still fair enough. Ohuruogu - magnificent in winning a world title again; puts her alongside Ennis, Lewis & Holmes as one of the greatest British female Athletes in history - sadly hasn't a prayer in the voting though.. Rose - first GB winner of US Open for 43 years - some achievement (though Rose,, rather like Briggo back in day (!), isn't actually British of course!!) But IMHO only those six (and McCoy debatable at that...) deserve a place ahead of Tai. Cockcroft - in there only to keep the female ratio just about respectable and so that the BBC isn't accused of abandoning disabled sport after 2012. Ainslie: crazy selection - in there coz he's retired from his solo competition and we've all heard of him! His role at the Americas Cup nowt to do with British sport and more technical than sporting. Bell & Halfpenny: good competitors in their international sides but not enough to warrant selection ahead of an actual World Champion.

Daniel Smith
As much as we'd love Woffy in the top 10 you'd have to be fairly deluded to think he'd come above any of the top 10 picked. In fact, the biggest crime is not having Phil Taylor in the selection. He's in his 50's for goodness sake and he's probably had the best year of his life still pushing the game of darts to an incredible level. What I will say though, if Woffy goes on to win another Worldy in the next couple of years there will be justification. Speedway (and rightly so) is well well well down the pecking order. I think the 10 selected is probably the best top 10 selected in many years IMO.
THE DEAN MACHINE
I thought Mo Farah was a woman ,well its a chicks name. Parsloes 1928 nearly
Fair point about Phil Taylor.. Ronnie O'Sullivan's achievement in coming back to win the World Title again too... Both ahead of Ainslie, Cockcroft, Bell & Halfpenny for me too.

Bryce
This comment from the BBC website says it all about the profile of our beloved sport. "Is the name Tai Woffinden real? It is probably one big load of trolls trying to get people to put it in a search engine and you get rick rocked or something. Behave you lot." Like a very large majority of the potential voters, this guy has never heard of Tai. Sad but true.

They (the BBC) should change the name then. ................................ or get done under the Trade Descriptions Act.
500cc
Froome: a magnificent achievement to win the Tour De France, especially as in truth he would have won the year before and entered immortality other than for 'team orders' that said Wiggins had to win. Sorry, got to pick you up on this. I follow a lot of cycling and I don't believe that would have happened. Last season Wiggins was as dominant a rider as there has been across a season for many a year. By the time the season reached the TDF, I found it difficult to see how he could be beaten It's so easy to underestimate the impact of a team, but Sky so dominated the 2012 race that nobody got a look in. It was actually a fairly boring race because of that, but Wiggins was the ultimate in what has become the incredible planning and preparation of British cycling. What we saw was Froome making a couple of points in the mountains where he accelerated. But he and Wiggins knew it was about being steady. Like Wiggins, there are a number of riders capable of blowing away from Froome on the hills, but like Wiggins his strength is regaining the distance over a period of time. They could have battled each other and let Nibali into contention, a bit like two riders forgetting to team rider to win a meeting and instead thinking of themselves. Froome is/was the better climber, but Wiggins learnt how to maximise his potential, better than any rider I've ever seen. The only time they were in direct battle were the time trials where Wiggins gained over two minutes on Froome. At no other point was Wiggins treating Froome as a competitor. The real reason though I believe Wiggins would have won a one-to-one battle with equal supporting team strength is Wiggins rode the tour to perfection doing everything that was asked of him. You'd be amazed what happens when a rider gets isolated and/or attacked. Froome didn't directly face this because his team was controlling the tempo for Wiggins. The opposition were targeting Wiggins as he was the leader, cretainly at the points of the race there was still a realistic chance to overhaul him. Later in 2012 Froome was given free reign to win the Veulta Espana. In the end three Spaniards picked him to pieces in the mountains and he was a very distant 4th overall. In truth that was the end of a long hard season which took its toll, but it emphasises how these riders are riding to the limit. This season Froome was looking the better rider, but last season it was Wiggins. Don't get me wrong, Froome was excellent in 2012 (and to be a ticket holder stood on Hampton Court Green in front of the podium watching him get an Olympic Bronze in the same race Wiggins took Gold was a moment I treasure), but Wiggins was the better rider in the TDF.
