Speedway Star Winter Reviews

Not quite on this subject but relating to the 'Best of British' series. Very good stuff and I especially like how a broader approach given to putting each of the British World Championship winners' years into a wider context of world history. But what the 'eck was THIS about in the first part, the one relating to Tommy Price?

Talking of the 'debate' on which of the big events pre-1936 and then between '46 & '50 might be called true World Championships. it says this,

"Boxing and darts, of course, have been plagued by different World Championships over the years, to the confusion of most. And speedway's still at it to this day. In the season just gone we've apparently seen Exeter and Wimbledon take to the track. Strangely, Exteter's County Ground has gone while Wimbledon's Plough Lane merely echoes to the sound of yapping greyhounds and the occasional rumble of stock cars."

What on earth does this bit about 'Exeter and Wimbledon have to do with the World Championship..?! I did get a bit of a feeling that the writer was lapsing into a stream of consciousness style in other parts of this piece but this is just plain bizarre!!

Foolish me! I realise now this is appearing in 'Speedway Star'. I agree your comments regarding the World Championship. Wimbledon and Exeter - it does appear to be an odd link.

I think there's room for both old pics and new ones - least you'll be able to remember the old pictures, unlike modern ones that all look the bleading same.

I agree to a point.

But the Black and white ones did not look good on the newstand in Smiths.

And surely there is just one photo available of Peter Craven that is a little different than the one on the cover that has been seen time and time again.

As a subscriber ( and probably will be again next year) the last 3 weeks issues have remained largely unread. I realise it's the closed season but after a cursory glance there doesn't seem to be anything that hasn't been seen on here.

It does seem over the top to dedicate the front cover and 13 pages to Peter Craven, ( great though he was) is this what we have to look forward to for the next ten weeks ?

yes i agree ,although i like the best of british and other retro stuff i dont expect it to be in the Speedway Star .if that sort of stuff is not your thing and track review is not your team then the star in the last few weeks is not worth buying ,very little else in it . There is plenty of things good and bad going on in speedway at the moment but if its lazy journalism or not wanting to upset the powers that be it just dosent get in.

Quite agree with the "not upsetting the powers that be" The Speedway star is nothing more than a lickspittle journal, acting as a mouthpiece for the BSPA & promoters.

Speedway will never clean up its act, as long as the Speedway Star is its passive mouthpiece.

The black and white covers are different and I suppose aren't meant to attract new readers, an arguement I find daft, as I doubt Speedway Star shows very little increase from completely new buyers every week, just by the magazine being on the shelves of ASDA etc? There are hundreds of magazines on the shelves, so what makes Speedway Star with another tepid picture of, say. Tai Woffinden more appealing to a non-speedway fan than someone who buys the magazine regularly? If he was with a member of the latest pop fad or near naked model, perhaps non-speedway fans would pick up the mag.

Speedway fans do live in this world of theirs, that they have this little secret that they wish everyone would share with them and enjoy, that they know what is best for any non-believers. Afraid that isn't so.. and possibly showing old pictures on its covers may persuade an ex-fan who no longer attends to pick up, say, a copy with Peter Collins on it. The ex-fan at least will then dabble inside it and realise what the magazine is... and he might be nudged back into attending.

Although I get the Star from my newsagents, I do tend to flick through the new copy when I'm at ASDA. I see other mags - Homebrew Weekly, In Doors With Me Fishing... but I don't waste flexing my arm trying to pull them off the shelf. Speedway Star, to non-speedway fans, will leave the same impression.

Can you be more specific? Don't beat about the bush with your views! That's meant as a joke on my part. :icon_smile_clown:

Im afraid your only interest in speedway is yours sons career, so why bother subscribing. He will be able to tell you the gossip from the pits.

Great idea to be able to print the stats. It will be my winter's plan to print all team stats and make my own little booklet covering the 2013 season, that's if Speedway Star doesn't mind my freak-like attention to collecting stats by using their work. There's no harm in it, is there?

If they are reproduced in the exact 'Speedway Star' format or very similar, it could mean a breach of copyright.
