Thank you Bryn. As suggested, I will look elsehwere for the Press Release. I was only following the situation via the BSF national League section.

Always very sad when a club is lost , my daughter and I have spent many great nights on the Island with BDJ Racing and of course supporting the Fen Tigers. The Islanders were always good visitors to West Row too.

It does seem though that there is a general apathy on the Island for their club which is where the root of the problem seems to be, with as someone posted, a population of 130,000 it wouldn't have been unreasonable to expect 500-600 to support the speedway. Sadly that has not been the case.

Hopefully in time the Islanders can be resurrected on a stable footing

An admirable effort by Bryn to send out the press release at 4am!! I think too many folk now expect PRs to be posted here on the BSF - the best place to find PRs from clubs are on their official websites and that's right IMO.

I did look several times on the Iow website. All that I could see i regard to what was happening was the following --

Not sure what 'gustix' is getting at posting the above! The press release is on the IOW website.

Unless I was clicking wrong keys when I tried late this afternoon I didn't see it. Obviously I'm getting too old for the internet. My apologies to you Bryn - and well done for that 4am effort in regard to the Press Release.

It's not just Speedway. I find that the island is an apathetic place in general which is a real shame - it could be so much more. The population actually tops 140,000 but what you have to bear in mind is that this figure isn't comparable to 140,000 elsewhere. A very large proportion of the population are elderly - indeed care, is the biggest industry on the island. Then you have another chunk of people living very remotely with very limited transport links. A real shame, but it's a much smaller target audience than the population figures might suggest. That said, I still feel there is scope to improve attendances to a degree, but nobody seems to have the answers as to how to go about it.

The IOW supported PL racing for a decade or more so the potential is there.

There is still time for someone to be a hero and take over what is a ‘going concern’. I’m hoping someone like Gordon Pairman or Drillerman will decide to be thought of and remembered for saving a track that could otherwise die.

Six days and counting. Divine intervention required. Prayers being uttered on an hourly basis at Mazz Towers.

Just a slightly different choice of words "The IOW" staged PL racing, but i believe i am correct in saying even then it got in to financial difficulties, which it is paying off until this day.

Perfectly apparent to me. This is an opinion by the way and by no means a statement of fact (so no need to sue me for my £2.74p. Took me ages to save that  ).

The Chairman and (to a slightly lesser extent) two directors have between them stumped up well in excess of £100k in loans, which it appears to me they would rather like back at some stage. By not staging Speedway, the profits from other revenue streams at Smallbrook will give them a chance of recouping their money. Run Speedway? They're not going to see it and indeed would end up putting more money in.

As Brendan Johnson has tweeted, "One man got his wish". But, sad and disappointing as it is, it's their money and they're entitled to it back so who are we to criticise?

I think its indicative that no-one else was apparently willing to step forward and become a chairman or a director.

Its all very well to say 'one man got his wish' but if any person is not prepared to take his place I'd say their view is that they are quite happy to risk his money but not their own.

Whether he must take some of the blame for the fact that the club is in the financial position that it is is entirely a different matter and what is certainly true is that he was most critical of those who previously managed the club.

They, at least, kept it going.

Well I don't know if any of the other shareholders would actually have the kind of money required to risk, so it might be a little harsh to say they are prepared to risk his money but not their own - but overall I pretty much agree with what you say.

If I were a wealthy man I would personally fund the club and wouldn't see it as a risk, nor an investment because it would be neither. It would simply be spending money for the love of the club because it's never going to be a money spinner. Therein lies the problem. The Islanders need a benefactor as opposed to an investor. Those are few and far between and unless there is an extremely wealthy person amoungst the 120 diehards, non existent. Because nobody would be prepared to do this unless they had a real love for the club.

Very true unfortunately!

The same as anything thats loss making, how ever much you may enjoy it there will come a time when you think I don't want to keep burning money!

Easy to critiscise when your not putting your own money in!

The only hope now is some tycoon comes in last minute or one of the IOW few regulars win the lottery!

I'm going to miss my weekly Tuesday return one day trips "abroad" from here in Kent to the IOW but will be there for shareholders meeting in October. Hopefully shareholders will be provided with up to date accounts as last set they were given were unaudited ones up to 28th February 2013.

Now any ideas as to what to do on Tuesday afternoons & evenings?

Will poss be at the Premier League Fours - that'll be enough for me! Personally I prefer the racing at King's Lynn and always have but am pleased that the Panthers WILL be racing this year.
