Just cancelled Sky, Told them that it was down to no speedway in the cancellation department and they said the contract hasn't ran out?

No idea what's going.

Bit premature aren't you?

There are a few foreign organisations who beam sports with an option for English commentary , including sky, into the uk, and no doubt France as well.

Sadly not true. The satellites broadcast from 25,000 miles up so their signals tend to spread over quite large areas of Europe, although some have their 'beams' directed to focus on certain parts of Europe.

There's a very large number of satellites up there, only a few of which are used by Sky and other UK-targetted broadcasters.

Broadly speaking though, whatever signals reach the UK will reach France. However many, like Sky are encrypted so they can only be watched in certain countries for copyright reasons. Ex-pats get round this by getting boxes that are registered to addresses in the countries whose programmes they want to watch.

The only channels that I can think of that broadcast in foreign languages that can also be listened to in English are Euronews and the international version of Eurosport.

You could, with a Polish-registered box watch Polish speedway in the UK or France for example, but not with an English commentary.

Unless there IS a station broadcasting to France carrying speedway David's options really are to get a box registered to a UK address and not let on where he actually is, or to simply enjoy Eurosport's coverage of the SEC. Bear in mind British Eurosport's coverage of the Grands Prix are for the UK-only version.

It's a tangled web but one that the likes of Sky protect to stop foreign broadcasters competing with them in the UK and ROI by showing programming in English that they have paid the rights for exclusive coverage here.

The way I read it is that negotiations are currently taking place between Sky and the BSPA. If that is the case, then the door to speedway on Sky next year is far from closed. If it was, there would be no negotiations and a simple no more speedway thanks, from Sky.

The deal may well have certain caviats with Sky demanding more teams, rule changes and telling clubs they have to improve their attendances for live meetings to make it look more appealing to armchair fans.

Just imagine what a few hundred million would do to British speedway though. Clubs would own their own stadiums, we would knock Polish Speedway into a cocked hat, media attention would be high through employing teams of media savvy professionals, helping the crowds increase dramatically. British youngsters would want to be a speedway rider and we would dominate the sport like back in the day. All a fantasy though! Just hope EL speedway is on TV next year.

Chance would be a fine thing.

I doubt that Sky really care that much what attendances are, and given the limited subset of teams who get televised anyway, would more teams really make any difference?

What's more likely to be discussed, is how little the BSPA are prepared to accept to keep speedway on television.

Sky might have a few more quid than they budgeted for, now that BT Sport have nicked the Champions League from them.

The results of the tender process for future coverage of the Champions League (Football!) matches will be known by next Thursday - 7th November!! The winners (and losers) will undoubtedly have an impact on whether Speedway features on Sky - at a reduced financial level - in the future!!!!!?

So Sky have lost out to BT Sport for the 2015/16 onwards Champions League TV rights, thereby saving £millions. Maybe Speedway on TV might be 'saved' after all!!? (ps. If 'saved' is the correct word to use, rather than deferring the inevitable?!)

only the like of the BSPA would negotiate such a ridiculous deal that ends after their annual conference. They really do have the collective business nous of a playground full of 4 year olds.... ;)

wouldn't try you renegotiate any such deal before the AGM, ? who lets a deal expire before they attempt renegotiation?

Do you know that they haven't or aren't in negotiations?

THEY are ...

I am sure negotiations have been going on for some time - The fact that the season ends end of Oct and the Sky contract ends end of Dec are of little relivance to one another as there is no speedway to show. THE AGM is also just another date in the diary which would not greatly influence any talks with Sky re 2014 and beyoynd. Yes it would be neat and tidy but should any agreemenst be made after the AGM then so be it - its just a normal (though significant) part of annual operations within the sport.

If it gives you any comfort - The term of Sky's contract with the Premier League doesn't coincide with neither the PL's AGM or end of season.

Well as of Monday evening CVS stated at the talk in that negotaiations with SKY have not even started and fully expects that Speedway will have to budget without SKY being involved and that will mean a cut in wages - less top riders and a more balanced fixture list with hopefully 40 league meetings instead of 28 and each team meeting twice (11 teams)

Leicester seem to be front of the queue to move up and are believed to have already agreed a deal with Kasprzak to be their #1 next season. Trouble is that should both the PL and EL reduce limits, CVS felt there are 3 or 4 teams that may be applying to move up with Ipswich front of that line with rumours that they will feature a few ex Witches riders like Scott Nicholls, Leigh Lanham and even Daniel King rumoured to be on their target list.

The BSPA need to know what SKY are doing but lets face it, even if SKY are interested, they will want to know what they are buying before agreeing a deal so both are in catch 22 with Speedway holding the short end of the stick as SKY hold all the cards. Therefore speedway needs to plan within their own budget and any SKY deal would be a bonus and hopefully go into financing young British riders in the lower league.

An EL team can't sign a new foreign rider and loan him straight out but they can sign a British rider and loan him to a PLteam. So if SKY come on board, use that money for EL clubs to help their own young British assets like Ashley Morris at Wolves, James Sajeant at Coventry etc etc compete in the PL with better equipment and backing which will reap them benefits in the future either with loan fees or getting a rider through the ranks for future seasons and get them on a deal that repays part of the finance already given out.

No idea what's going.

The best and most true post you have ever made ........ :t:

Will BT Sport even be in existence in 2015?

That's a very good question Matt, I don't know anyone who has subscribed to them yet. Sport channel subscriptions seem to be low priority with folk these days, and I cant see that changing...

they have over 2 million subscribers since the start of this seasons football, so yes they will!

interesting that BT have out bid sky, does point to sky over extending themselves on football and F1.

at the end of the day they have to fill the sir time with something, its just a shame the EL speedway product is so rubbish.

even fans have turned off so what chance is there really?

regarding sky in Brittany/Normandy.

yes its easy to get ( i have had it in the past) either by just moving your equipment across, but there are also companies in that area specializing in installing sky, i assume legally?

In the Telegraph article I posted earlier, it says that BT have paid £900m plus. It also says that Sky are thought to have come close to matching it, although it was more than double the last Sky/ITV deal. I think it's reasonable to assume cut backs might have to have been made elsewhere, in order to fund a greater outlay on the Champions League.

BT Sport are spending an estimated £1bn a year, so will need around 5m subscribers to break even.

If they are not in that ball park of subscribers and new broadband customers by the end of next year, there will be an awful lot of pressure to pull the plug.

Of course they will but they will need to add to their summer schedules. I dont think they have much British based sports to show that time of year. I enjoy the coverage BT have provided considering the channel is new.

Also Champions League is on a Tuesday and Wednesday night! I know a few teams that have race nights on that night! Brummies however moved theres to Wednesday aswell so there is an open space at 7pm when SKY were showing 3 diffiernt matches over the four main channels!

I know its not on till 2015 but it has to be key surely!
