Speedway Star Online

Recommended Posts

BARRING any last minute hiccups, Speedway Star will be available as an online edition via your web browser or as an App through the App Store and on Android devices from the issue dated December 7th.

Each new edition will be available on a Thursday morning, although this will vary around Christmas, affecting the issues dated December 28 and January 4.

Subscription rates no matter where you are in the world will mirror the UK price for the printed copy, although there might be slight variation with those accessed via the App Store because of pricing arrangements with Apple.

But for a someone in Australia or New Zealand taking the online edition as opposed to the printed one, which normally doesn't arrive there until a Monday or Tuesday, the annual saving will be around £50 ... a little less for those in the USA. Even those in Europe will enjoy a significant saving on the annual cost.

For more information over the next few weeks, go to www.speedwaystar.net

Great news. Will there be a trail version and how about a single purchase price ? I cannot afford a subscription :(

A great idea re 'Speedway Star" but I think the alternative you suggest also needs considering.

Hi Phil,

Out of interest, how is a single copy not practical?

Every online magazine I have come across has single copies available for purchase, surely once the magazine is created and stored online its simply a matter of paying your money and downloading a copy?

I may be missing something and perhaps there are other magazines out there that are subscription only.

BECAUSE the only way it is practical and, frankly, affordable for us at present is via a subscription based system which does not allow single purchases.

As I take an annual subscription for the Speedway Star how much will I save if I transfer and go online

THE cost for an online sub will be virtually the same as for the printed version in the UK.

What platform is the web version going to use?

The Yudu version of SpeedwayStar Xtra is not usable on an ipad.

Will it be in downloadable form (say pdf) so that issues can be 'saved' for future reference?

It will not be on the Yudu platform. We are going through a company called ExactEditions who will handle the whole process for us.

Ah I see, going through a company called ExactEditions eh Phillip? And there was I trying to get my head around just how your good self, Clarkie, Scunny and Dave F had managed to become 'computer whizz kids' and set this all up! :D

Not that I'm "in" on this field of expertise (online publishing), but selling/distributing it as .pdf means pretty soon you are only selling one copy... You sure there are no app's that show Yudu? Photon shows Flash videos that safari dont.

I still don't understand what you mean by practical and affordable.

Its not like printing numerous copies? One digital edition is created, that can be downloaded. What difference does it make if someone buys one copy or subscribes to a larger number?

See, that wasn't so hard!

I promised you I'd buy a subscription if the Star came out electronically, so I'll put in an order when it's available.

Philip,

I have a subscription to the Speedway Star, but do spend a fair bit of time out of the country and it would be great to be able to access the magazine on-line, whilst away. Will you be making the on-line version available to existing subscribers of the paper-based product? After all, what we have paid for is the Star and I would hope that it would/could include the on-line format as well.

I have an idea the two variations in regard to Speedway Star are separate issues. You are asking that all postal subscribers are automatically set up on-line as well? If that was the case, why should they create an on-line version?

i worked in the magazine industry for around 10 years, so am interrested in Phil's reply. My guess though is one or more of the following:

  1. There is no automated order processing, so manual admin is required for orders , which would roughly be the same for an annual sub or a one off purchase. If it takes ten minutes of admin for an order (downloading off the site, packagin up, charging the credit card, dealing with any follow up queries) then the profit margin on a single copy is gone tight there.
  2. The subscription database may not be able to handle “one off” orders (I saw many different subs processing systems used, and frankly they were all rubbish) – ties back to point 1 above.
  3. Possibly the company doing the IT work converting to electronic copy are charging per subscrivber rather than per issue sold?

Anyway, this is great news, I’ll definitely be subscribing from NZ.

I’d definitely see a market for back issues this way. Even if it was not every issue (initially) but "sets" such as “world final issues from the 80s” etc. I’m sure this could be done in a cost effective way, and if reasonably priced would need only a handful of purchasers to show a profit.

i'd assume to appeal to those who would not purchase a conventional subscription, predominantly those who travel a lot or are based overseas. Also, I would guess that long term the margin has to be better on the online version by cutting out the cost of postage? More subscribers also potentially drives up advertising revenue as well as circulation revenue.

certainly it seems a reasonable request that anyone paying to subscruibe to the paper version should at least have the option of free subscription to the online version.

For a variety of reasons. But for anyone living overseas, an on-line version takes away the cost of distribution and the time lag. Nowadays some people prefer to download and read on the go, e.g. Kindle users. Not my cup of tea, but very popular nonetheless. Having an on-linr presence also demonstartes that the magazine is in the 21st century and if it can be readily accessed, can also be readily ordered. Do you need any more?
