Finnish final at Joensuu today: 1) järf, 2) kastren, 3) norola, 4) tani d. Tani was trying to keep up behind järf and ended taking contact to the outside barrier and then came across the track over the inner line and was disqualified/retired. No rerun.

 

Over 900 paid in, excellent stuff.

Yes, no where near the outside barrier. Thats how it looked to where I was standing, between bends 1&2.

 

Järf and Tani were class apart. I quite like Järf's attitude towards what he does on the track. On the other hand it's sad(?)/pity that he is unable to make it happen outside of it. Meaning he cant gather the support needed to make it happen on world stage. Because thats what he wants. To be in the ISGWC.. I actually think he would do circles around Aakko and Simon on a track that each have had the same amount of track time... His confidence is spot on and his dives to the bends were quite spectacular...

 

EDIT: Some editing, more during the day to correct mistakes.

 

So... 2009 he took 9 points and was 6th. A heat win in his last would have given him bronze, but he finished last behind Aakko, Flyktman and Lehtinen. Those were also the medalists and that years Finnish national team. Injured in 2010, champ 2011, out with illnes 2012, champion 2013 and 2014. Last 18 ridden heats in finals won.

Have to admit that I also saw it in a way that he hit the outside barrier when I was at the pits yesterday.

 

Wasnt Järf riding in 2009 final in Forssa? http://www.forssanmoottoriseura.fi/UserFiles/fms/Image/kuvagalleria/jaaspeedway/28_2_2009/15.jpg I kind of remember thinking that there was this new guy riding who had potential.

 

I really hope he gets his program in a shape he can go compete outside Finland. His riding looks smooth and bike goes like a train. He chooses right lines and isnt a hazard to anyone on the track. Like yesterday he was one of the few who actually used his left knee to keep bike in balance.

It's the three day Assen meeting this weekend, with the Roelof Thijs Bokaal on Friday 7th, followed by the Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship Final 3 on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th. Dutch Grasstrack, Jacqueline and myself will be there (along with a few others from the forum) and if you are going have a good time.

We hope to have updates or at least the result as soon after the last heat depending on how good the WiFi is in the Press Room for those of you who aren't going but are interested in the results.

The top two Dutch riders from Friday night will be the reserves for the ISG Meeting, and if last years meeting is anything to go by, then this years should be a cracker! Niklas Svensson defends his title, and Reuben de Jong is also riding. If you've never seen him ride he is a phenomenal talent, finishing second in last years meeting. DeJong could have won had the final not been re-run, as he was leading Svensson, when Ove Ledstrom fell.

I suspect Saturday's coverage will be on a time delay, as although it says "Live..." on the EPG, the meeting starts at 7pm CET, whereas the Sunday coverage will be shown 'as live' possibly editing out the track prep periods.

 

Either way, it's been a long time since they showed Ice Racing on Eurosport, and even longer since they showed it in prime time, so it's long overdue such good coverage!

 

I've also been told that both days from Inzell will be shown too, over the weekend of 22nd/23rd March

Hope you all enjoyed the Eurosport coverage, which I'll be watching later after I finish my work (still sorting out my pictures and reports from a long busy weekend). From the comments people have sent me on facebook, they finally realised what I've been banging the drum about for years.

Some news about the injured riders:

Both Rene Stellingwerf and Gunther Bauer are out for the rest of the season. Bauer shoved Stellingwerf into the fence on Saturday night, going for a gap that wasn't there, and Rene has a broken foot, and the spikes shredded part of his muscle, but I spoke to his wife on Sunday, and he wanted to ride, but the Doctors said no . However he is in good spirts and will make a full recovery. He should be home now.

Bauer suffered a puncture which caused his fall on Sunday, and he has suffered a broken thumb, which rules him out of the German Championship, and the last round in Inzell.

Also watch out for the name Dirk Werkman. He is a spectacular rider with bags of talent, and with Ruben deJong (who didn't ride in Assen after smashing his machine up in practice) the Dutch now have two young riders who are capable of going to the top of the pile in a few seasons!

Bangma therefore used the show model for the race on friday eve, did not race as good as his won bike he admitted....

Only managed to catch sundays meeting on Eurosport.Unfortunately imo it was a pretty poor meeting.Most heats were sorted after about 50m and by the last lap they were strung out!!! Only got interesting in the last few heats when the Russians were up against each other,apart from a tussle between Svensson + Aakko.Hope the saturday meeting was a lot better

Wondered why Bangma was tootling around at the back. You've answered that. I still think Ruben and Dirk are two to watch though, they both impressed me both times Ive seen them. I got the impression that Johnny was happy to lend them bikes. I understand Dirk rides in Berlin next weekend, so that should be interesting and it's a pity I have to earn otherwise I'd be there.
