Pearson Defends The Play-off... Desperate

Recommended Posts

The entire league programme is, and it's only my opinion... simply the padding out of several months... until the crowds come out for the Play-Offs.

Have said this for ages, the league is just to ensure you get into the top 4, once achieved its the form team that wins in the play off.

Why do you think they stuffed Panthers on the run in.

Not true . A Wembley World final made no difference if there was a Wembley rider in it or not.. It was nearly always a full house.

Four Team finals at Peterborough always had more away supporters than home.

I seem to remember the Inter Nations Championships in 1972 that matches like Australia v Sweden at Hackney and Denmark/Norway v New Zealand at Wolverhampton drew excellent audiences. Then again in the Daily Mirror International Tournament in 1973 Russia v Poland at Halifax and Sweden v New Zealand at Swindon drew excellent crowds. And so did the final at Wembley.

Sorry what has a World final and meetings 40 years ago got to do with a play off final in 2013 ? a four team final or pairs event has 10-16 sets of fans rather than just two ...crazy answer and logic as normal

Remember the days... when you used to wish your team on to an away win, another notch on the ladder towards the league title. The Play-Offs, they say, create a perfect end-of-season finale. But to me, it's like starving all week on cheap noodles, so you can afford a takeaway on Friday.

Nigel Pearson summed it up perfectly on Monday... saying Poole were bottom of the table in May (so what, I think Belle Vue was top!). It creates a scenario where the wisest let the others run off first in the cross country marathon, knowing the weaklings will get a stitch somewhere along the way and then... whoosh! along whiz the fittest, roaring across the finish line.

It is simply sport's equivalent to The X-Factor. All the rubbish is on first, the last weeks we have the cream.

By the way, I have been told about the X-Factor, never having watched it.

Rather say I watch speedway, thank you, so you're not having me on that one.

I know that is true because if they were capable of actually thinking that would allow them to understand that their ill-judged, ill-informed diatribes against Sky and in particular Nigel Pearson do not enhance the reputation of the sport or add to the likelihood of any other significant TV coverage in the future.

I very much doubt Sky or any other television company particularly care what a few posters on the BSF may say. They'll be basing their decisions on commercial returns in terms of advertising/subscription revenue or the basis of how cheap the sport is to use as filler.

I don't particularly care for Pearson's style, although I think he does a reasonable job and isn't deserving of some the vitriol on here. However, it's a strange speedway mentality whereby some seem to think we should simply be grateful for any sort of coverage, or there shouldn't be any sort of critical analysis.

Any sympathy for Pearson is also muted by his attitude towards the burgeoning fan network on the Internet some years ago, long before he was on television and people were able to slag him off.

Having followed Speedway for nearly fifty years I can only recall one major TV channel that has committed itself to covering the sport properly. Who knows what they may choose to do next year but one thing for certain is that if coverage does continue I hope it is with Nigel Pearson.

The fact that he is highly regarded within his industry; is good at his job and is clearly a speedway enthusiast is just part of the reason. The other part is that I would truly miss the confirmation that a minority of members of this forum are totally incapable of any rational thought process. Awful post.

Maybe you would feel more at home in North Korea or some such state.

Overall, I don't mind Pearson, there are some things that irritate me (as all commentators do, that's natural) and he has made some condescending statements regarding fans in the past, but on the whole he is a speedway guy and does a reasonable job in his role (sometimes an excellent job).

Viewers are fully within their rights to criticise if they wish to do so, some have valid points, others as you suggest are just spouting nonsense.

For every poster that criticises Pearson, Tatum et al, there are others who praise them. Everyone is entitled to their say and as Humphrey says, it won't have any impact whatsoever on whether Sky continue, don't continue or who they employ.

Let's just remember that Nigel Pearson is expected, alongside Kelvin to front a live two hour broadcast and be not only the anchorman but also the main commentator, there is approximately 15 to 20 minutes of "actual" racing.

I think when all of that is taken into account they actually do an impressive job, I can't think of any other live sports broadcasts where the main commentary team are also the presenters?

As for NIgel "biting" to criticism, do you blame him? Some of the stuff/accusations that get thrown at him are ridiculous, and don't forget he is a speedway fan at heart.

So cut him some slack hey?

Quite agree. I remember, I think it was Subedei(Bila Hora originally), who taunted him over several months with his usual sick bile. In the circumstances Nigel held it together very well in view of the comments.

Nigel is an old friend and former colleague, so I can hardly be impartial. However, I know few people in sports journalism who work as hard as he has for the last 20-plus years, much of that time spent covering and promoting speedway, while his involvement in the Heathens project underlines his commitment to the sport. His commentating may not suit everyone, but it reflects his passion for speedway and the style his employers want - for my money he does a very good job. As far as his attitude towards social media, he has never been one to suffer fools and the dogs' abuse he gets on Twitter in particular is totally uncalled for - more power to him for fighting back. If you don't like his style, it's fair to say so, but many of the comments here and elsewhere cross a line. As Mr Sensible so sensibly says: cut him some slack.

The irony of it all !! We have a guy who posts in defence of someone who is being "slagged off ", and he does that by slagging someone else off.
