Pirate Nick
I doubt it. No, really, Listen By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. However by about midday he got bored with doing nothing and sayeth unto himself "what can I create to top the last six days"? And so it came to pass that Wimborne Rd was created and he saw that it was good. And God said "on this track a mighty team shall ride and they shall be promoted by many men, but these men are all forerunners for the one that shall be known as the trophy bringer and he shall be called Matt of the Ford. 3 Then God blessed Wednesday and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done and watched the mighty Pirates smite all asunder. Grachan
I would have done a reply saying that by God I meant Matt Ford - but I got beaten to it!
Catalan
Find it amusing that Matt Ford is accused of cheque book speedway. Like most business men he has a budget to work to and he does that with a lot of success. I admit his budget might be more than a lot of speedway promoters. ten years after
HARSH!!! I don't think so. I like Matt he knows the game, and it can be a jungle out there where only the strong survive. He saw an opportunity and a good one at that, took it,put his money where his mouth was made his own luck, and the rest is history.
TonyE
And as far as I know the rules haven't been broken. Poole worked within the rules and will (probably) win the play off tonight. But I still prefer the performance of Birmingham this year, overall. Particularly given their odds at the start of the season. But my belief is that the BV result did not get Poole into the playoffs. Yes, it was towards the end of the season but there we many more meetings than this. It was signing Greg Hancock that got them to where they are tonight. But they would not have been there without it! Edited October 16, 2013 by TonyE
oldace
Football would never ever adopt a play off system to decide league champions... Never ever. Imagine if the Champions League, for instance, ended up being settled in a one off match. There would be a riot
Fromafar
Am not a Poole fan, but! Sometimes you have to make your own luck! Change things to bring yourself a good run/luck! Fair play to Poole, battling through, changing things, spotting an opening a chance and grabbing it! Have they done anything illegal? I think not but am not an expert! Proactive, will to win, keep supporters happy, make some money, speculate to accumulate, plan and manage! I am sure Mr Ford and the fans (probably the riders to) relish Mr Ford being the pantomime villain, getting talked about, jeered etc (At least it creates some passion and excitement.) If Mr Ford is there to promote, keep the team in the public eye, get people through the gate, think plan and know the rules he appears to be doing ok for himself. I am not a Poole fan but I have to respect all of that (Including sailing close to the wind sometimes????) am pretty much neutral with a preference for Coventry Also once Poole made the play offs it seemed obvious that they would win (Had a slight hope for Swindon & no hope for Brum) I agree you have to make the big decisions if you are running it as a business and Ford made them IMO. Whether he lost money on them we will probably never know .
oldace
I don't understand the negative connotations that go with "chequebook speedway". There's a points limit in place and teams work around that as best hey can. But in reality promoters shouldn't really care about league titles. They are, in truth, just a carrot to offer fans. Promoters simply want bodies through the turnstiles to make for a successful business and the best way to ensure that is for for all teams to be competitive. Every team should start the season in with a chance of winning the league, it keeps the fans happy.

How the teams get through the qualifying stages is what's been changed. Edited October 16, 2013 by Vincent Blackshadow

Has it ? the way you get into has changed as you no longer have to be champions ...so what we have is a comp called the champions league that has teams in it who are not champions who also play a final to decide it ..I am amazed with that in mind that there has not been a riot . The White Knight
The Play offs are there as a tension builder / money spinner The final is there as a tension builder / money spinner Afraid so. Conversation at the top of Speedway Management:- "How can we get more money out of the Mugs (us - in case you were wondering) - Eureka!!!! I know, Let's have a 'Play Off System". "You can't do that - somebody other than the League Champions might win it, it's not right". "Oh, don't worry about that, who cares if the Championship is turned in to a laughing stock - it will make MONEY"!!! "Will it REALLY"? "Guaranteed - I promise - we'll make a mint". "Ah - that's OK then - let's do it - I don't suppose it really matters if the Team that has won the League over the Season have their Title snatched away from them. It doesn't matter that the Title will be devalued". "Good man - I knew you were a sensible fella". SO HERE WE ARE!!!

This is similar to our speedway isn't it? You know, total misnomers. The Elite League isn't because it hasn't got the 'Elite' any more. The Premier League can't be because it isn't 'premier' (first in position, order, etc) . It's just a name. It's a replacement competition to find Europe's top club, as it always has been, and one that always ended with a one-off final. It's just the qualifying process that's altered and, with so many teams now entering a mini league competition is necessary, followed by a knock-out stage culminating in that old, traditional one-off final.
