oldtimer
I thought Jason did not apply for a visa by the cut off date as his previous visa was only for 10 months, (he was quoted as saying "for some unknown reason".) He could not apply for a new visa until he was signed by a club for 2014 and by the time Somerset signed him it was too late. I assume Somerset did not sign him until after the AGM when the rules and team averages were confirmed.
A ORLOV
On Bikerfm they commented that the old contract ran out too soon and before the agm so it is sometimes difficult to confirm an "employer" for the following season.
Stan Duppcomic
I feel really sorry for Jason and the Rebels here but having read the Border Agency site, my understanding of a tier 5 visa is that it is for temporary workers, and that each time you change job you need a new one. So a rider in the PL all season could use one if they stayed with one team, but if they went to work for someone else then the sponsor needs to be transferred and a fee of (i think) £412 needs to be paid. Then if they go back to the original sponsor another £412 needs paying and so on. SO. A rider doubling up needs to change his visa each time he rides for a different team or rides in an open meeting. Over a season that would be tens of thousands of pounds to keep within the law. In reality is a rider going to do that? No. So i can see perfectly well why the Tier 5 status cannot be supported. It could throw the whole sport into SERIOUS trouble with the government. Surely the issue with the Tier 2s is only if a rider lets it run out whilst he is out of the country. DON'T let it happen! From reading the Border agency website it appears you can get a 3 year visa. Wonder why Doyley didn't have a longer one?
Catalan
Taken from the Rebels website: 2014 PRESS & PRACTICE DAY DETAILS Tuesday January 21, 2014 The Cases Somerset Rebels can confirm that they will be holding their season-opening Press & Practice Day on Friday 21st March. In keeping with previous years, the day will be split into 2 portions, the first, which will take place in the afternoon, will see the riders introduced to members of the press, team sponsors, season ticket holders and specially invited guests, after which there will be the opportunity for those attending to meet with the riders and for members of the media to undertake any interviews. The gates will then open to the general public at 5pm, with the riders taking to the track, weather permitting, at approximately 6pm, after which there will be an informal social in the Oaktree. Entry to the evening session will be free of charge, but we would like those attending to donate a minimum of £1.00 towards our Charity Partners for 2014, the National Autistic Society. The club have supported the NAS for a number of years now, and with their local centre at Somerset Court celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, it has been decided that the Rebels will continue their support of the National Autistic Society for the 2014 season. Surely you'll be at Poole.

Not sure it would make a huge difference tbf. and the point thats spare could be used if one of the other 6 are struggling a few weeks into the season. Cliffeboy
although some have intimated that it would be expensive if riding for 2 clubs due to switching admin fees. If that were the case then a decision has to be made on him riding for only one club this season.I am a Somerset supporter and would love to have our skipper back but I feel the best solution would be for Nick to return to Somerset ( if poss ) and JD to ride for the Lions. In saying that though bearing in mind all the work Debbie is putting into this for JD and the Rebs it would have to be the Rebels,a very difficult situation which I think is going to all end in tears unfortunately. SCB
Isnt it weird, speedway riders are self employed, so surely Jason doesnt need to be sponsors by an employer? Or they're not actually self employed?
oldtimer
puzzling quote in an article written by a Helen Kennedy in this weeks Star. Talking about Somerset's opening match challenges against Plymouth. Gary is quoted as saying "it will see an early return of Kyle Newman which should provide added spice to the matches and with Kyle lining up for The Devils it will give an additional edge no doubt." No mention of Alex Davies, very strange, perhaps it's his visa problem!

Does anyone know ,if he does come back, how many meetings he would miss as he'll be Swindon's asset, U21 Aussie WTC and could also enter the World U21.
