Gp Viewing Figures.

Recommended Posts

EUROSPORT UK have enjoyed excellent viewing figures (better than Sky achieved) and, of course, still have two years to go on their current contract. Think you will find a few additions to their coverage in 2014... they were late to the party this year ad didn't have sufficient time to organise everything as they would have liked.

Mr P.R.....Have you been doing some extra PR and got this great sport some more airtime? Go on tell us all. Tai's winning the WC needs to be built upon, the season is now over and what bit of publicity he's gotten so far (not enough in my opinion) will soon die down and it needs to be BUILT upon NOW!!

I think Eurosports coverage has been brill so far and hope for even more in 2014 and should they do a year review of all sports or of 2 wheeled variety that they include Tai in their presentations. We dont want Speedway to be treat any better/different to all the other British winners this year, just to get a fair share of the whip.

After the panic of what channel we could see the Gp's on. Has EUROSPORT had a good year?

That sounds great........but what about this post when i mentioned the good viewing figures for the SEC on Eurosport Europe just a few days ago by a certain Philip Rising?

THINK we need to take some of these figures, whether for SGP or SEC, with a generous pinch of salt.

Ok i get it.Just some of the figures, not the ones Mr Rising mentions though

A LOT of people including Nigel Pearson, who Tai asked for help at the start of the season, and BSI are working hard to get our new World Champion some decent media coverage here. He was on Chris Evans this morning (after frantic efforts to track him down in Poland), BBC North and Radio 5 Live today and should be on BBC Breakfast on Wednesday.

So far we haven't had any great reaction from the BSPA. Frankly I don't see them having the contacts to make much mileage and, ironically, Tai might not even be riding in the UK next year.

While talking to a TravelPlus audience on Saturday he said that he felt racing on only two leagues (not Sweden) helped enormously this year. Today he has signed contracts with Wroclaw in Poland (Sunday) and Vetlanda in Sweden (Tuesday). Obviously that does not necessarily rule out Wolverhampton (Monday) but there must be some doubt.

How ironic would that be... a British World Champion seen only at Cardiff.

The SGP is shown only on Eurosport UK rather than Eurosport Europe who screen the SEC. I believe that the SGP viewing figures in Poland this year have been good and, of course, it is also taken live in Australia, Sweden and Denmark (also a a second channel with delayed transmission) with the highlights package going to around 100 other countries.

I am sceptical about all TV viewing figures, all the more so for terrestrial TV. I have never met anyone who knows anyone who is one of those who have their TV watching monitored in order to come up with the figures banded about. It certainly isn't an exact science although clearly SKY figures are much more accurate.

But at the end of the day the TV companies make decisions based on these numbers, perceived or otherwise, and Eurosport UK are more than happy with their figures.

Emerald tyke... am I doing extra PR? Not much I can do personally these days I'm afraid and the attitude of national newspapers and especially their sports departments is very different to what it was when I was speedway correspondent for the Daily Express and later the News of the World. I was actually asked to provide 300 words for today's edition of the Daily Telegraph but only about 20 per cent actually appeared in print.

What I will say is that Tai has become very media savvy, got out of his hotel bed and immediately went live with Chris Evans this morning, and is very agreeable to any reasonable requests. But he cannot do all this on his own. Nigel is a good guy to have on board, handling his Press Releases, Nicki Sands, the Media Manager at BSI/IMG is banging the drum, but how British speedway as a while gets the most publicity out of his victory is something only the BSPA can answer.

And as long as some think that having a British World Champion won't actually put bums on seats at their particular track I am doubtful that much will be done.

Nor are you ever likely to as there's only about 5,000 households being monitored, and I don't think BARB monitor television on mobile devices either. However, any half-decent statistician will tell you that you can extrapolate with reasonable confidences if you have a big and diverse enough sample size,

It certainly isn't an exact science although clearly SKY figures are much more accurate.

How are they more accurate if Sky are using the same monitoring system as everyone else?

BECAUSE, or so I'm told, SKY can pretty well tell what we are watching at any given time on their platform so presumably they can calculate the numbers more accurately.

5,000 out of tens of millions doesn't seem that many to me. But, hey, I am certainly no expert and this not a subject I would pretend to fully understand. And, yet again, we are going off on a tangent.

The question was have Eurosport (UK) had a good year. Their answer is yes. Let's leave it at that.

Sky will only be able to tell if people have their Sky box plugged into the phone line but I would imaging 90% do this as Sky tell them they have to - yet interestingly if you tell them you have no landline they still find a way to install their service :D

5000 is probably a pretty good sample tbf. Next time you see an advert on tele telling you that 9 out of 10 cats prefer Whiskers or 88% of women prefer Super shampoo look at the small print. It'll tell you it's from a survey of 60 cats or women.

Thanks to all. As for publicity, any is better than none. Be interesting to see if the world champ who raised a lot of money for charity will get a mention on BBC sports personality at the end of the year. I've seen lesser known waste of space footballers get one.

And most likely they went and asked the women if they prefer Whiskas to any other cat food and they asked the cats what their shampoo preference was for :)

At Sky there is a very complex system of getting viewing figures which is proved to be a lot more accurate now than BARB figures so much so Sky often take little notice of the BARB ones.

As others have correctly advised all Sky boxes connected with a telephone connection send data back on a regular basis of what has been watched, recorded and deleted if you are up during the middle of night 3-5 am you may see the Green online light on your box on for around 2-4 minutes all done over a free phone number so no cost to customers and has always been part of the Sky tv contract.

This system is actually going to be getting even better around Nov time as there is to be a major software upgrade on most Sky HD boxes which will bring some good new features for consumers but also improve Sky's reporting services, all boxes connected to a broadband connection will be able to get real time figures if need be and at the end of programmes, it will also show time viewed and how much was watched.

Sky also get detailed figures from on demand viewings for Sky programming and also Sky Go on mobile devices

Good to hear as the BARB figures were shown to be greatly unreliable in a study a few years back, haven't a clue what it was now mind.

Gee! i think from experience most people dread hearing a company say "there is to be a major software upgrade which will bring some good new features for consumers" as it often results in fixing/improving something that isn't broke and breaks it lol.

Whilst i'm not fussed if somebody knows what i watch on tv for every minute i watch it i do think this extensive SNOOPING is going into some very dodgy waters. How long before the police or other authorities will be demanding (if they don't already do) a report of what a viewer has watched? I can certainly think of many criminal cases where they would like to infer negative aspects to a person's personality. God help anyone who watches documentaries to do with terrorism, instantly picked up by GCHQ and PRISM (plus the various other similar eavesdropping programmes that trawl all forms of communications and household media electronics).

Of course one of the biggest causes of concern is how Sky have failed to ensure that people know about their viewing choices being recorded. Certainly as of now the vast majority of subscribers do NOT have a clue about it happening.

while it soun ds great that highlights packages are going to 100 other countries, of course that doesn't mean that they are neccesarily screened.

In NZ they typically show the highlights package a couple of months after the event (which is an improvement on last year when it was with sky) - is that really something worth them boasting about? how many people interedted in speedway are going to not have already watched the meeting at that point?

Really enjoyed the GPs this year and thought that Eurosport did a great job. Look forward to next year's coverage.

One thing I like about then is that they publicised speedway during their BSB and WSB coverage, which hopefully helped increase their viewing figures. I've spent the season trying to convert various Bike race fans to our sport and some have stuck with it (when they remembered to watch!! Series record FTW guys!).

One thing though, in many (if not most) cases, if you're "turned on" to speedway after watching a GP, a visit to your local track may prove a bit of culture shock! I suppose like watching Moto GP then visiting a low level club meeting.

IF Tai does not ride in the Elite League next season, would that not prevent him getting a licence to ride in Poland and/or Sweden?

Don't you have to have a licence to ride abroad? I though that if you were British, this was only issued to you if you rode in the Elite League?

Robert Lambert has ridden in Germany the last two years and has never ridden in the Elite League.Simon Wigg, for instance rode on a Dutch licence years ago.........don't see what the problem is,as someone has pointed out Scott rode abroad whilst not having an Elite team, but if it really came to it Tai could ride on any licence
