bigcatdiary
I'd never deny that I count Hoggy as a friend, but I can say for sure that I would have made the same comments even if I had never met him. The fact that you can't even give him credit for being a major player in the continued existence of Sheffield Speedway suggests that your opinion is far more subjective than mine. I agree. After all, you wouldn't want a drug baron or someone like Plymouth's ex promoter involved. Other than that, though, I think Spinny is right. What has happened with Hoggy is shabby to say the least (and hopefully not a sign of things to come) but what matters most is that the Tigers will come to the tapes this season and that they have an attractive line up. Interesting comments and you regard yourself as a friend but if Hoggart was such an excellent bloke, good at his job and sorted the takeover out single handed it begs the question why he has just got the sack. Yes, it puzzles me too - particularly when the current owners said near enough the same things and that the parting of ways was down to 'different directions', whatever that may mean. You have to ask whether it was about the running of the club or simply because his face didn't fit for some reason. In the petty, spiteful, backstabbing world of speedway the latter is, after all, entirely possible.

Probably down to wanting to take the club in different directions. I suppose we will never find out, unless one or both parties reveal what those were, but that would be up to either or both parties to do so. Like I say I liked the Dave Hoggart found him very approachable, but I also like what the consortium have done so far and I like the fact that appear to listen to the fans and take on board what the fans are saying, and as much as I admired Neil Machin I do feel he had lost sight of fans. At the end of the day when businesses are taken over and especially sports clubs there will be people who leave or are asked to leave. But for the first time since 2011 I feel confident about my speedway team, and what they can achieve, and not wish ing to sound too harsh but that is all I really want with or without Dave Hoggart.

Somebody said on page 83 did Machin send Hoggy to sort me out, I never had a problem with Machin or Hoggy but when giving my opinion on this forum Hoggy decided to state if i didn't like it go somewhere else, which i am sure many would agree is not a great way to bring in business. So clearly from then on we were never going to get on and since when am i hiding under a forum name and definately not a keyboard warrior. What i do not get is people saying Hoggy did such a good job ! If he was doing such a brilliant job why have we been in serious decline for last few years and why did the decline start when Hoggy arrived on scene, it picked up a bit a few years ago but again last two years have been woeful. I would like to finish this by saying a well done to new promotion with offer to season ticket holders, now that is how you treat fans and promote ! We all have our opinions and respect them all so lets crack on with supporting a good side and be thankful we are coming to the tapes in 2014 and roll on 27th of March. Dcb7
Just a quicky on the stewards.... I remember the PLRC in 2012 when Rene Bach took a pretty horrific tumble, he was taken to the medical room, seen too, left, then tried to get back in! He was stopped by a steward as he was walking back in and given some right abuse. Rene told the steward who he was, and the steward basically squared up to him, and said ' Listen, I don't give a F--- who you are, F--- off.' Absolute disgrace..! I've been reading some of the stuff posted on this thread and have been astounded. You have to congratulate Machin on his disappearing trick; he seems to have disappeared completely, in fact he seems to have disappeared three or four years ago. That must be the case because a few posters like you are blaming Hoggart for Machin's failure to invest in his business. As I understood it Machin's money, Machin's business, Machin's rules, so guess who is responsible for the decline at Sheffield? Following your logic I suppose that'll be the tea lady in the main stand is it?

Not saying Machin is not at fault, he had lost interest no doubt about it but Hoggy not as good as people making out and pleased the new promotion got rid as they believe Hoggy would have held them back and I don't think Hoggy will be missed at all. We move on with new people at the helm and already signs are good.

We move on with new people at the helm and already signs are good. You miss the point completely. In your desire to criticise Hoggart you are in fact using him as the scapegoat for Machin's lack of interest over the last four years. Machin was the boss; it wasn't a partnership of equals. It's a bit like the General lumping the blame on the troops for his bad strategy! It's clear that you don't like Hoggart, that's your choice, but don't start blaming him for other people's issues. We don't know what the new promotion promised Hoggart as part of the purchase/partnership discussions; we do know that they used him to front every press release and he was clearly the key man for them during the negotiation. The Sheffield Star article makes it clear that they did not discuss his departure with him; that is poor by anyone's standards. Understandably many are just happy they've got speedway; some are pleased they are seeing the back of specific people because of conflicts they have had and are gloating; guess where I think you are on this? romans lovechild
interesting to see the press release regarding season tickets, with the inclusion of a free programme, it seems the previous debate on programme versus racecard has been solved, preferably my choice would be a racecard when you see some of the other programmes that are knocking about,
Blackadder
In the Sheffield Star:- Taylor Poole has landed in the country to step up preparations for his first season as a Sheffield Tigers rider. And the talented Australian is regarded as a key signing by Tigers’ chief Damian Bates who says he has the ability to challenge for the club’s number one spot. Poole impressed during a previous spell in the UK with Ipswich and his average fits Sheffield’s plans to perfection. Said Bates: “I am particularly pleased with the signing of Taylor Poole, he could be the key rider, for me. With the likes of Simon Stead and Leigh Lanham you know what you’re going to get from them. So if Taylor can challenge as a heat leader it will benefit the team. I like the way Taylor rides and he’s super keen to become a big hit with our supporters, he’s going to be popular I am sure of that.” The club are currently making final plans for press and practice which takes place on March 20 with the Air Fence Fund raiser as opening night, seven days later. Said Bates: “It has been hectic since we, as a new consortium, have come to the club and everything that has needed doing. There is a long list of things to do every day and I’m grateful for all the help we’ve had so far. We had a fantastic night at the Legends evening last week when over £2,000 was raised towards the air fence and on behalf of all the management we cannot thank everyone enough who made the night such a big success.”

If so it would appear Hoggy wasn't so important to the new guys even at that stage!

Steve55
Like what's happening in the season opener (Air Fence Fund Bonanza). Got some decent riders to come in and give our top five some competitive practice. Whilst pitting Bates & Neilsen up against some lesser competition so they've got an idea of where they are with the track/set ups etc. Can't wait for it to start - bring it on!

Cue Ball
At least 6 home and 6 away isn't it? and then it is on the basis that Andre will make a mockery of his average at reserve and that Simon N doesn't do the same in the main body of the team. Be interesting to see what riding order they go with - I imagine it will be: 1. Simon S 2. Simon N 3. Poole 4. Lanham 5. Roynon 6. Compton 7. Josh But they might be tempted to sacrifice Simon N and put him at no. 5 so that we have 2 solid/experienced pairings in the main body of the team to get points - like we did last year with Facu - and hope that Andre can get solid points at reserve and act like a heat leader when riding with him

Blackadder
The Sheffield Star is doing well this week:- Joe Screen has vowed to be a hands-on manager of Sheffield Tigers this season. The former British Champion, who quit racing last season after a glittering career, says he wants to focus on working closely with riders in a coaching capacity – as well as brushing up on the rulebook. And Screen says he is happy to get his hands dirty on a race night if members of his team need help in the pits. “I’ve always been a hard worker in speedway and always got my hands dirty when needed,” said the former Bradford and Belle Vue star. “And I will continue to do so as a manager, I have no problem with that. I want to work with the lads and if there is something they need help with on their bike I will be happy to give them my opinion. “I know the rulebook is complicated at times, but for me a big part of management is working closely with the lads, making sure they have respect for you and helping them along the way. “We have a talented group of lads and I think the team spirit will be fine. We’re all getting together next week for the press and practice, and I’m confident we will get along great. “I’m looking forward to working with the younger lads like Josh Bates; he reminds me of when I was first starting out and I think I can offer him some help. And me and Simon Stead have always got on great, it’s good to have him as skipper . “It’s a new chapter in my life and I’m pleased to be at a club like Sheffield. The new people seem nice guys and I’m sure the supporters are in for an exciting season.” New Tigers signing Taylor Poole will line up in the opening meeting of the Owlerton season. Poole, who jetted back into the UK from his Australian base over the weekend, will link up with the remainder of the top five from the revamped Sheffield side for the Air Fence Fund Bonanza on Thursday, March 27 (7.45). He will be joined by fellow countryman Cameron Woodward, who is once again riding for Elite League Eastbourne this season. Season ticket holders will be offered a £5 discount on admission for the meeting.
