Sheffield 2014

Jake Knight

In my opinion jake started the season very well, winning heat 2 on more than one occasion and passing Millsy on the last lap to keep Sheffield in the league cup. To see the supporters giving Jake a standing ovation made me very proud. Disaster then struck in the first league meeting away at Workington , jake lost his best engine in his first race and we also lost steady after a first race crash. Jake took his full quota of rides on his second bike and was clearly off the pace. We went about trying to get his other engines to work for him but unfortunately the engine gremlims struck, 2 x broken rocker arms and ignition system failures took there toll over the next few meetings . (Guess it wasn’t meant to be.) With the team now losing and Jake struggling with his engines the writing was on the wall, I could see the frustration in Jakes eyes when he came in after his rides, he was making gates and getting passed. The management had no option but to drop Jake and bring in Adam Roynon I cant blame them for that. Jake took his time to re group, he went out and got himself a job to pay for some new equipment and when the chance came to resume his career with Kings Lynn he jumped at it. The smile was back on his face,he was winning races again and upped his NL ave to 7.62 finishing the season on a high. He has not been able to commit to racing speedway in 2014 due to full time work commitments but will race weekends on the local MX scene.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who got behind Jake during his short time with Sheffield. Good Luck to Sheffield for 2014.

Richard

I hope Jake does come back into the sport. There was definitely glimpses of a good rider and one over time would like to see back in a Sheffield race jacket, if he wasn't under as much pressure as he was and didn't suffer from as much mechanical problems, then we'd probably seen a much steadier rider around Owlerton.

Great post Richard and I feel if you had posted jakes problems when they occurred he would have got a lot more sympathy than the flack he got.Its so hard for british youngsters to make the grade unless they get loads of cash thrown their way. Some supporters don't realise that the young lads bills are often met by parents when they haven't got many sponsors so they cant compete on a level playing field. What made it worse was the make up of our team.Jake really needed to at least make his average and more.Had he been in a stronger team he would have time to develop.I hope our new owners take a leaf out of your book and explain problems to the fans and not just fob us off with poor press releases from the last few years. They will get more respect and most supporters will accept it.Good look to jake in the future and let him improve at his own pace.

SHEFFIELD Speedway’s new management team are aware of an allegation made by Swindon Speedway regarding an alleged approach for Nick Morris.

Because of the serious nature of the allegation the consortium, through co-promoter David Hoggart, will deal direct with the British Speedway Promoters’ Association.

Said Hoggart: “We were made aware of a statement issued by Swindon Speedway and because of the serious nature of the allegation we will be dealing with the BSPA on the matter.

“There is nothing more to add at this stage.

What a team the 1st one would be, with Stead Roynon, Morris & North in the side we would be a powerhouse ! Just hope we pull out all the stops to get Nick Morris onboard - as he clearly wants to be a Sheffield rider ! Sign him up sign him up !!!!!

Although would replace Knight with another 3 pointer.

You really are deluded if you think Nick would want to sign for you if he had a choice of the Premier Lge clubs & not only because all the other teams are complete.

Still preferable to previous options though eh?

What previous options are they then as Swindon are the innocent victims in this cock up but to go behind their backs when they've already loaned you Steady is shocking & if I was promotor Sheffield would never get another of their assets in future.

I was by the pits and overheard some of the "discussion" re Hall's departure last year. You tend to burn your bridges if you try and make your boss look a buffoon in public; even more so when you end up looking the idiot! For Hall to get back in I wouldn't see it as a "re-building bridges" exercise; more a "what new technology can fix this chasm for us?"

I also witnessed Hall senior & Joel Parsons putting Richards side of the argument over to Neil Machin in the pits that evening, whilst Richard stood outside the pit gate! It was also note-worthy how quickly Hoggy & Nigel Hinchliffe got out of the way and took no part in the discussion! Richard made a rod for his own back pulling out of the Rye House meeting like he did. He needed that 'rod' before, then he might not have hurt his back lifting the bikes out of the back of his van!

He might have come out of the situation better if he'd tried to argue his own corner rather than letting others do it for him.

Says something in the Elite league section.

I think it was Swindon perhaps you could double check.

Sounds like he was desperate to get away

Don't make yourself look silly as Nick has never said that in any statement but things have changed for him & the Sheffield promotion have made it easier by their actions.

For the record I really don't give two hoots where he ends up as this sport is dying on it's backside because of the way it's being run.

Sheffield might be Nicks only option in the Premier, but what an option! Best set up in British speedway!!

Give the lad a break, he's still a Swindon asset , there's been a major cock up somewhere along the line completely out of Nicks hands.

Let him ride for us this season along with Leicester (rumoured) and fit him back into the Swindon set up next season. As for loaning us Steady, did Swindon really want him??

Best not to stalk Sheffield site if you dont want to get wound up

Have you considered anger management or sticking to the Robins forum

Me I hope Morris rides for Sheffield but i do know where he wont be riding

A Swindon rider on your site is ok to post about & as for anger management, no I'm good thanks & only telling the truth about the way your promotion have gone about this.

Bit hypocritical when you've just posted on Swindon site.

Which in other words "We're as guilty as sin".

Of course we know that basically Nick Morris has fallen into our laps.

But if you go back to my post way back on this thread posted on the 24th December I think you find it is post number 354.

On that post I copied and pasted a statement from Nick Morris's Facebook page, which said the following;

"Big news coming gonna be some upset speedway fans but have to do what's best for myself."

That would suggest there was problems for Nick regarding where he was going to be riding and who he was going to be riding for.

Its blindingly obvious that Premier League racing featured heavily in his plans, and at that time he had two options Peterborough and Sheffield, and it soon became clear that Peterborough had no plans to consider the lad.

That left Sheffield.

What was the lads options?

Stick to his Elite commitments and wait for Premier League to come in.

All well good doing that but with an average of 8.94 he could have been waiting sometime to get the chance, and it would have to be one that fitted.with his Swindon commitments.

Did Sheffield tap him up?

Well the consortium did not take over the club till the 31st December, so I cannot understand if Nick put the statement out and the consortium took over well after that how could they have tapped up the lad.

My guess is that Nick has told the Swindon Promotion that he wanted to join Sheffield for a Premier League gig Swindon have tried to call his bluff and told him he wants to ride for Sheffield in the Premier League he should put in a transfer request.

In return Nick has called Swindon bluff by doing just that..

End of the day I think what will happen is that when all the dust has settled is Nick will ride for Sheffield and remain a Swindon asset, Sheffield probably pay a transfer fee to Swindon for Simon Stead.

I f Swindon persist insisting on transfer fee then I think we could see the whole speedway assets issue been blown out of the water, which in a way might not be a bad idea as it is out dated and I wonder if it could be illegal, and in the long run some clubs along with Swindon could finish up losing out big style.

End of the day this would never have happened had Somerset/ BSPA depends on what side of the fence you are sitting on is to blame as this is a knock on from that situation.

Fair comments & Swindon fans knew as soon as that appeared on Facebook that things were not right & I guess time will tell who's telling the truth but it happens too many times in this sport & is the reason why so many fans are turning their backs on it.

The asset system is weak and illegal, riders are self employed and plus this situation is no different to likes of us, we get offered a job and take it but then a few days before starting that job a better offer comes up and we tell first company sorry but something better for me has come up and will be taking it.

Happens all the time and Morris is just like all of us and is doing what is best for him and his career. It is strange how it has come about and it is slightly unfair on swindon but i am fed up of fans saying we own him etc no unless you pay him a salary all year round then you don't own nobody and that person can do exactly as he pleases.

To compare what happens in the real world regarding going to a better job is totally irrelavent as that is not how it works in speedway.
