Sheffield 2014

Recommended Posts

I still think it will be one of Albin OR Koppe to return, Albin showed a bit more grit and was very liked by the fans, but we will see what happens, hopefully we will get the team finalised this week. Part of me also finds it hard to believe that Koppe has gone back to Australia after competing over here in the winter.

Either way this new look lineup has got the excitement going again with the fans, cant wait for March.

I think Koppe's situation is his girlfriend has been working over here, and her work permit is all but over now.

Good luck to him and hope to see him back in the UK soon.

From the Sheffield Star website today:-

Leigh Lanham has vowed to offer the benefit of his experience to Sheffield’s younger riders this year.

The former Ipswich man was unveiled as a new signing for the Owlerton side last week and he admits he’s been taken aback by the welcome he’s received.

He will be looking to hold his average in a revamped Tigers side which so far sees only Simon Stead and Adam Roynon retained from last season.

Said Lanham: “I at least want to maintain my average although of course the aim is to try and put a little bit on to it ideally.

“I’m not making any big promises but obviously I want to maintain what I do and make the most of my experience because I’ve been around for a few years now.

“I’m a team man as well which does help in getting results in those tight meetings by bringing a bit extra to the team, and hopefully I can have a positive influence to help Sheffield have a great year.”

And Lanham is well aware of the troubled times Sheffield have been through over the last two seasons.

He said: “I know they’ve struggled as a team and we have to ensure we win our home meetings as a starting point.

“I’m confident we can do that with the team the management are putting together and I really can’t wait to get going now.

“The fans will be keen to see us do well after a couple of poor seasons, but they were not helped last season by Simon Stead’s injury so early in the campaign.

“I like the way the team is coming together and I really feel we have a good chance to be knocking on the door for a play-off place. I’m looking forward to the new challenge and we should have a lot of fun along the way too!”

Great comments from Leigh. I think he's just what we need - steady, experienced and a team man. I'm looking forward to him being at Sheffield this year as there were too many in last year's side who seemed like they couldn't care less about team spirit.

Have to totally agree, the balance of the team looks really good, experience and youth, racers and gaters

I think the Screen/ Stead Team Manager/ Team Captain combination is excellent for the club and I can only see the club going from strength to strength as the season goes along.

As for Leigh I thin that we are looking at a solid team heatleader, the one thing I do expect him to do is be the rider who leads the team on on the smaller more technical tracks,.

Will be interesting to see who the final two riders are but for me the team is a competitive one which the Promotion has done well to put together. .

Well if Koppe is going back to Oz and Albin doesn't return (posts by Ariel75 - who seems quite close to him- seem to suggest that the promotion haven't been in contact with him, would like to be corrected if I'm wrong) then it might be a new face, but then again perhaps another old one!

If things are to be as above then if there are any points from 0.62 and over left, they will be sadly wasted IMO. (If you see where I'm coming from!)

When you look at the riders available the best option certainly looks like Andre and one other would best possible option, and the chances are that we can start with Andre at reserve which has be seriously considered.

If you bring in Facu or Damien you are looking at up to 5.59 left from Facu and 6.21 for Damien, the big problem is there is not many riders out there or available that would fit in.

The point I was trying to make Spinny was regarding the young fella' we've got on 3 points. I'm all for bringing on young Brits, but after watching poor home sides at Owlerton for the last two years I'd like to see seven home riders that can score week in week out - from the start of the season! Josh is no doubt far better off in the Premier League than with Swindon (can't see the point of this draft business thing in the Elite personally. Think it's going to de-value the EL TBH.)

Anyway from what I saw of him in the Prem last year I wasn't impressed, neither were Rob Godfrey and the majority of Scunny fans. I think it's pretty poor of the management to leave the little guy in Argentina, especially after all the time it's taken to sort out 'new owners'. This gave no time for him to be offered to other clubs, I'm sure one or two would have seriously considered him on that average!

Anyway that's just my opinion. I now eagerly await tomorrows announcement.

Before anyone judges Bates on what Scunny think they might also want to take into account Edinburgh's opinion.

Ever considered the cost of bringing someone from Argentina compared to Barnsley? Fact is, despite how much promise Facundo showed, the cost of getting him over here, accommodating him and possibly getting him on better machinery possibly could have been too much. I think Bates is a good local rider and has a lot of promise. I hope we do see Face back over here at some point, whether that be with us or another team as he really is an exciting rider and could be on a snip of he gets his equipment sorted.

Agree with the above posts. Much as I liked Albin's effort and style when he was going well, I would feel a hypocrite choosing him in preference to a young English rider. I'm sure we all sincerely wish him well and I hope we see him again one day. It's Compton + 1 for tomorrow.

I think if we was talking about a rider who was around 25 years old and had been hanging around the National League for 5 or 6 seasons I might possibly see your point.

But it was a 16 year old kid who had the balls to take up the challenge at Scunny, and unfortunately it did not work out, does not mean that at 16 you dump the fella on the scrap because he failed at the first hurdle.

I think you find that the lad will have learnt from that experience and will be better, in fact he did as Halifax Tiger says some very good Guest bookings for Edinburgh last season and I believe he even managed to lower the colours of one of the best riders in the Premier League Jason Doyle so he does have something about him and he is very young so chances are he will only get better.

I can also see why people would like to see Facu back but, it has to be said his equipment was at times very sub standard and let him down, yes he was a racer and and yes he was very exciting but for him to be competitive he has to have a decent engine to score points and there lies the problem with him.

Josh Bates made amazing progress last season whilst Facundo started well enough but wasn't much better by the end of the year. I think the new management have put together a side with youth and experience with a bit of excitement thrown in as well. A team with Steady / Leigh / Andre will be a great boost to riders like Adam / Josh / Taylor plus the seventh mystery (?) rider.

Josh bates guested for us at Ipswich riding at number2. I'm sure he scored 6 paid 7 and impressed that night.

It's great to see a local lad ride for his home team. I'm sure Leigh lanham and stead will help him greatly as will screeny.

Totally agree with this post - under the guidance of Screeny, Stead & Lanham i think Bates can really flourish in this lineup.

Taylor Poole is no slouch around Owlerton, we all know how much he likes to throttle it round there too, i reckon this guy could do some damage this season too.

So Bates is rated by Edinburgh, Ipswich and most NL fans. Scunny fans think he can't stay on a bike for four laps, maybe he is a small track rider? Owlerton is a big fast track will be interesting to see if he can cope.

Good looking team, Andre could be the trump card. Everyone can put something on their starting average
