Sheffield 2014

Recommended Posts

he asked Rosco if he could sign for us as it is only a 15 minute drive for him and Rosco accepted and fair play to him for that.

Some sort of compromise over Morris, perhaps ?

Whatever the case, two good signings.

I was impressed with Bates from the first time I saw him riding for Mildenhall in 2011 and he has progressed considerably since. Scunny had a problem with a certain member of his entourage but if that is nipped in the bud early on it shouldn't happen again.

Good news for Sheffield with Joe as team manager and Josh bates at reserve. If they go ahead with Compton and possibly Lanham shaping up to be another decent team . Sheffield being one of the teams we meet twice in the Pl this year. We could be in for some good battles :t:

Actually I was referring to a previous post from Charlieboy who seemed quite confident that we were signing an Aussie who didn't race here last season. I have no idea who this may be, but if true then it's quite a short list I think and most of the likely names have already mentioned on here. One thing we should be confident of, is that Andre Compton will be added to the line-up and we keep seeing Leigh Lanham mentioned in the local press.

Taylor Poole?

Taylor Poole?

Could be. http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/SPORT/10953048.Robins_searching_for_a_new_reserve_as_Bates_moves_on/ . Suggests Sheffield will not be persuing Morris, but are interested in Lanham and Poole. Anyone know what average Poole would come in on?. Could Lanham Poole Compton and Albin be last 4.

I don't think that issue will be problematic anymore.

Good luck to Screeny I think this is a great move by Sheffield

Where's the evidence for this?

I hate to pour cold water on the celebrations but regardless of your sport, the greatest performers make notoriously poor managers. I'd say the jury is out on Screeny as a manager. Come back at the end of his first season and then make a judgement about whether this was a good move or not. My guess is that Joe will still be too in touch with his instincts as a rider to fully assimilate the finer intricacies of man-management, team dynamics, off-track politics and polishing the egos of pit-stop prima donnas which his new role will demand.

I wish Joe every success in his managerial career, but perhaps this is one chicken we shouldn't be counting until it's fully hatched. Nevertheless, it represents a bold move by the new promotion and demonstrates they're thinking big and are ready to take a punt on untried potential.

Sheffield needed a shake up and fair play to the promotion It might be a raving success I happen to think Roynon is a gamble

However we need a strong powerful Sheffield side

Neil Machin was not providing this and I don't think he and his staff were going to at any point in the near future

Good luck Screeny

So Colin Pratt, Eric Boocck, Neil Middleditch, Phil Morris, Rosco, Chris Louis, Gary & Brian Havelock, Len Silver are no good, plus I am sure I missed a few.

In 86 years of British speedway you can name nine ex-riders who made a reasonable fist of the vital role of team management? That's barely one per decade! (Which one of those would you nominate as the Matt Busby, Alex Ferguson or Bill Shankly of speedway?)

My point is this: Joe Screen (bless his heart) has been master of the shale sport for twenty-five years; he's thrilled us all, climbed to the highest heights and seen off many pretenders to his throne. But when it comes to management, he's an APPRENTICE! I hope with all my heart that he wins the league in his first season and stays with Sheffield long enought to turn it into the legendary team of the twenty-first century...... but the jury's out.

You are right in what you say, and there are no guarantees in sport, but I think the combination of Screeny as Team Manager and Simon Stead as captain I think that they will be a cracking combination, and I think that they will work well together.

It could be construed as been a bit of a gamble but I think it might just pay off for the club.

Taylor Poole would be 5.99 I think

Im sure that was his final rolling average.

He may qualify for a reduction as he has missed a whole season.

I thought we might get full team announced and possibly the new owners today but they may be stretching it out if all paperwork not completed.Good luck to joe,at least he should be able to get a good team spirit in the camp.Hopefully Lanham and Compton and hopefully the aussie announced next..Looks like might get andre at reserve !!! That would be a big plus.Looks quite solid if that's the team.

Wondering how long it'd be before the voice of doom reared its head. Where's private frazer when you need him?

Don't confuse the role of team manager in Speedway with the role of football managers. Seen it being done so many times but its a Completely different job. Sure its a learning curve for Joe - that's a statement of the " bleeding obvious" but he's only got to focus on reserve substitutions heat 15 and giving out the black and white helmet cover at an appropriate time. As a senior rider over the years he's no mug. Hes not picking the team, signing riders, dealing with off track politics etc etc. that's what promoters do. Surely Joe is there to coach and motivate, and that comes from ability, personality and life experience rather than anything else. Joes got bundles of both, and when it comes to handling "pit stop prima donnas" whatever they are, all he has to do is bring out his medals, and a few videos(!) and show the oik in question that he knows exactly what he's talking about. Dont forget to the young riders of today Joe's career is current and in HD. Go back three years, and despite Eric's trophy cabinet being crammed with championships, he was in scratchy black and white to the kids of the 2011 team: an irrelevance. No wonder the bloke spent most weeks red in the face.

I like almost everyone else, am feeling very optimistic. Bring on the final 4 signings and see what weve got. Bet you a pound to a penny its a million miles from the past couple of seasons.

Not so sure that there has been doom and gloom, one person makes a point that a good competitor in a sport does necessarily make a good Manager, which is true, but who knows whether or not Joe will make a good Manager.

My feeling is that alongside Simon Stead as captain we have for me and other Sheffield fans the Dream Team, and put a bit more life into the team and give us something to cheer about which for the last couple of seasons which has been hard work supporting the team.

I honestly believe that the the new Promotion have there finger on the pulse and have picked up on what the fans want and so far they have delivered with the changes to the Team Management and the Team its self.

Yeah some good points SK and I know Joe will approach this challenge like he has everything else in his career. He's a winner.
