cyclone
Buggy Fleaman (Cardiff 1929). A perfect pair would have been Merv Salt (Teeside ?) & Adrian Pepper(Peterborough) or Gary Rolls (Hackney) & Paul Bentley PS Recall a rider called Bingley Cree who I rodefor Poole in 1948, is this who Mr # Name Removed # is thinking about ? norbold
I have to say I find some of the responses to this thread a bit difficult to understand. For example I can understand why Buggy Fleaman comes in to the category of 'unforgettable speedway names' but Ray Wilson, Taffy Owen???? Gemini
I don't think any of the above are Speedway riders, Peter. They sound more like some of Sandman's motley crew on his boat, especially Happy Kirk. Edited March 2, 2004 by Gemini

mIcK50
There was a bloke going around in Queensland years ago called Zane Harrington and over here in the west, we had a rider with the very marketable name of Guy Hawkes! I think he had a short stint in the 2nd division in England. I believe he was a school teacher by profession.

Thank you Cyclone - I didn't think I'd gone completely off my trolley. Have we mentioned Split - Squire Frank Waterman yet, and how he got his nickname? Swede Savage.. and another who was better known for flat track racing, but had a go at speedway, Dick Hammer. movie star looks and a very tough customer. . on his helmet he had painted.... Dick... then a hammer coming down,... Hammer.. although i always thought the name was well suited for one in the porn industry? great man and nice to everyone to boot! tough as nails, pardon the pun.. David Croucher
Have we mentioned Split - Squire Frank Waterman yet, and how he got his nickname? Don't start that one again! Which of the five or six different explanations I've heard do you think is the correct one? To be honest Norman (which I always am ) I think it has changed so much over the years that even Split is not sure anymore. Perhaps we should try Phil 'Crash' Bishop - that one's a bit more self explanatory. Cheers, Crouch.
Beowulf
One of the greatest speedway names has to be Ove Olson (rode for Birmingham) How about Eric Broadbelt? never come across that surname anywhere else, ever.
