Unforgettable Speedway Names

'Cisco Kid' Johnnie Fry - West Ham, Oxford, Eastbourne - among several other teams.

'Duke of Canning Town' Ray Terry - Harringay junior, Rayleigh junior, Eastbourne.

Both mainly early 1950s riders.

This has never been confirmed to me, but a speedway contact tells me that Ralph Horne - a jockey turned speedway rider - and especially active at Belle Vue, Coventry, Belfast and Wigan between 1946-51 was nicknamed 'Shoe' by some supporters!

They are both mentioned in "Who's Who", or rather the "Howes How"...

Steve

I would have expected nothing less than that to have happened in regard to Ron How and Ron Howes - both competent riders.

John Hyam, if only his numerous pseudonyms were forgettable

Good one: there is evidence that he was set for a place in the 1956 Eastbourne Eaglets' team (a side initiated by the late Charlie Dugard) and also appeared on track at the old California-in-England raceway.

Out of interest Trible H - did or have you ever ridden a speedway bike?

By the way, the said JH was advised at some California sessions by the previously mentioned Ron How, and also Maury McDermott, George Bason, Stan and Jim Tebby, and Al Holliday.

Maury McDermott actually rode for Sunderland 'Saints' back in 1964 gustix.

Out of interest, did you know of Vic Ridgeon - he rode for us too.

I know you didn't ask me, but I got to know Vic very well in his later days. He sent me some good old photos of Clacton as he used to holiday there in his younger days! He was such a nice man and very forthcoming with information and stories about ye olde days (especially at Rye House) when I was researching for my books.

I went with both Maury McDermott and Vic Ridgeon to many meetings over the years. Great guys - sadly no longer with us. RIP.
