Steve Turner
Poor Graham Miles! Where did/does Harry Huntly ride? Harry rode for Newcastle (and Gosforth) right from the early days of the sport in this country. A good rider, despite his massive height. Just under 7 foot in his boots and helmet ! While checking him out I read about a couple of match-races he had with Wally Lloyd at Birmingham. The crowd couldn't stop laughing as the riders shook hands before their first race, as 17-year-old Wally was only 5ft 3in ! Wally won 2-0 mind Harry passed away in 1995 aged 88, soon after having his wish granted to sit on a modern bike. A Reading junior, Mick Hester, was kind enough to take one up to him at home. BOBBATH
Nice story Steve Turner-what say you Norbold I reckon we should crown Harry Huntly as the tallest ever!!!!!!!!!
Ron Butler
etc etc??? You mean he had more than ONE hit? And there's me thinking that his Greatest Hits album contained 14 versions of Wimoweh (the original, instrumental, re-mix, extended re-mix, backwards, etc) His greatest hits were the ones he scored as Angus McKenzie the novice rider at Hyde Road! I only remember him having one hit song as Karl Denver the singer i.e. Wimoweh.
norbold
Nice story Steve Turner-what say you Norbold I reckon we should crown Harry Huntly as the tallest ever!!!!!!!!! Looks like it. A match race between Harry Huntly and Johnnie Chamberlain would have been good.
speedyguy
Nobody has mentioned Dink Philpotts or Bingley Creig yet Crouch Surely you mean Bingley CREE, still alive and living in Canada?
star ghost
The starting gate for the match race between Harry & Johnnie would look a bit odd. The tapes would have to go high so Harry could get under them but be low enough for Johnnie not to dodge underneath to get a roller. Harry probably used to take part in rolling starts for his races or was he a victim of the "Stamford Bridge" pushers being a visitor. I don't expect he was ever at Stamford though. If they needed a decider to the match race it could be staged at S B and Johnnie could always ride through between the legs of the footballers on the pitch today but poor old Harry could never try that one. iris123
Bengt Brannefors also rode for New Cross. Count Strachwitz most certainly didn't.But was he the only rider with a title to his name or were there other landed gentry riding speedway bikes?
