stevebrum
I can't stand MF - but he has taken an intelligent move by linking with Scunthorpe. Not only will he get to know about newcomers, he will also gain knowledge about PL riders through working with a team that has amateur, NL and PL links. EL clubs shouldn't work in isolation - they should be aware of what is happening at all levels of Speedway. It is in their own interest - and in the interest of British Speedway. I agree. Hats off to MF for recognising that this system is here to stay so he is hoping to unearth riders the same way the Stars have. Excellent move. If Smart is bottom in the averages how would that work if there was no one below him? A better sense rule is to be able to chose any rider on the list who is currently not fixed up. If there is a rider with potential who had an average fractionally above Smart, it would be a shame for that rider to miss out simply because of the way riders have been graded in a list. Its not a better sense rule at all , its a Blue favoured rule interpretation. There has to be rules and a system. What is the point of listing the riders and selecting at the start of the year if you can just pick whoever you want when the rider list has been selected. How would it be fair to other teams if another team with a `low numbered` pick is able to pick a rider much higher up the list just because they suddenly want to drop the low pick. It would most definitely be totally unfair and open to abuse, probably fine for some blue tints but not to anyone with a sense of fair play.

Don't try to tell us you care about the development of young British riders, just Poole finding a shark at number 7 to give you an advantage ! Well said & so true.

They would have already been snaffled in the draft pick. Riders who chose not to be included at the beginning could not be signed and only accept guest bookings. If your rider, say 25 on the list, got dropped, but there was a rider at number 20 desperate to ride in the draft, why should he miss out over a fraction of a point? Surely the idea of the draft is to bring on riders, not penalise them because someone has said they are a few places higher on a list. This is for all teams, not just Poole. Bring on the youngsters and don't be so bloody rigid with the draft riders. Edited May 1, 2014 by Steve Shovlar

Yes - bring on riders and don't penalise them - says the fan of a team that just dropped a draft rider!! the word hypocrite comes to mind! don't be ridiculous. if a rider is out of his depth no point in keeping him. Not all draft riders will cut it. But why should a rider miss out because of a list? Be fair to these riders who want to give it a go. Some will fail but we have already had success stories in the first month! Just seems that Swindon fans are completely anti the draft, while all other clubs have embraced it. Well embrace this - pick someone below Lee Smart in the draft as per the rules - SIMPLES!

Can't remember you saying this when that happened. If I am honest I didn't pay any attention to the draft list or picks. I know little about the NL or who is good or not other than the top few NL riders. I would have no idea if a Richings was better than a Rose. I had no idea where Bates was in the list at the time. I now know he was near the bottom of the list below Smart. As Swindon had Worral as first choice, they should have been able to chose one of any of the riders who remained unpicked on the list to replace Bates. Riders have been missing out because of a fraction of a point for years, at most teams, anyway. Whilst the top five have a rigid 32 points limit, this is not the case for the draft picks. Therefore IMO clubs should have a little flexibility in choosing the few NL riders who are available. Remember, there are no "ringers" left in the draft who could go out and set the league alight. Popular Post Steve0
Who can this be? I know little about the NL or who is good or not Then in the next sentence... Remember, there are no "ringers" left in the draft who could go out and set the league alight! Sounds like a confused and desperate man For once - play by the rules and stop trying to manipulate them to your own team's advantage. It's quite clear - pick someone below Lee Smart in the draft (which was just issued today) - suck it up cupcake!

Just seems that Swindon fans are completely anti the draft, while all other clubs have embraced it. Swindon Speedway have embraced the 'draft' more so than any other club in terms of the interests of the youngsters, Swindon released Bates to go to Sheffield (as per Josh's wishes) and got the unfortunate Darryl Ritchings (get well soon Darryl) in as a replacement, his nasty injury meant Swindon were limited with their options and went for the inexperienced Dan Greenwood (good luck Dan) as a result..(no complaints from Swindon either).. In total contrast, what do the Pirates do, drop Lee Smart at the earliest opportunity after failing to use him at BV for some unexplained reason and now you want special dispensation to bend the rules when it comes to replacing him... Your post is that of a 'buffoon' Steven.....

Bring on the youngsters and don't be so bloody rigid with the draft riders. If ALL the teams picked the most promising riders then there wouldn't be any left on the sidelines. Riders are already penalised by this draft system and riders like Birks and Auty should have been added to make 10 strong picks and then the drafts for next riders could be a bit more flexible. The whole reason of the draft was to `share` out the riders as fair as possible. Nobody should be able to get a leg up and pick a rider much higher up the draft just because he hasnt been picked. That is crazy. Riders like Lambert and Bates could have held teams to ransom to ensure they got left off the list only for teams to suddenly `drop` a low grade rider for a rider that suddenly makes himself available for selection. Opening a can of worms there. I thought the draft was `fair` personally, certainly not perfect. Did i read someone said Poole picked Smart `tactically` so they could perhaps see who else became available later?? ANY team shouldn't be looking for `favours` to bump themselves up the list. The only fairest way as per the original draft is to allow teams currently in 10th, 9th, 8th to re-select if they wish and then move up to the team at the top. Every team then gets a `fair` option of change if so needed.
Steve Shovlar
Charles wright? Surely it wouldnt be in the spirit of the draft to allow you to pick him up in exchange for smart?!? I said earlier that no rider could be picked who is listed as only allowed guest bookings only. And as usual Stevebrum misses the point. There are no riders much higher up the list. They have all been signed up in the draft. Riders who opted out are not available because they are "guest bookings only". There are no ringers, no autys, no nothing. No one is trying to pull a "fast one". All that is left is the Brendan Johnsons etc. Any rider worth his salt is already signed. So would you begrudge Brendan Johnson a ride because he was one place higher than, say, Max Clegg? If you say yes you are robbing a rider of a chance to give it a go. I believe we should be flexible with the draft riders. No team will get any advantage with the riders that are left. This is my opinion and I am not arguing the case for Poole, just the remaining riders who are sitting, waiting and hoping to be picked. I am struggling to believe some of you cant see that. stevebrum
And as usual Stevebrum misses the point. Says the guy who champions British talent that are left `undiscovered` but is happy that his club TWICE sack one of the better up and coming riders (howarth) and now want favours because one of there draft riders isn't very good. The usual hypocrisy that has been picked up by umpteen people already. But the usual response of course.
Gavan
You sack Smart you pick someone BELOW him in the list. That list is announced so instead of trying to bend the rules how about a discussion on which rider it should be?
g13webb
Poole's behaviour towards Smart surprises even me. They bend the rules to acquire Newman as their first choice of FTR, and then moan when they are allocated Smart. Instead of welcoming into the fold, from the first instance they have wanted him to be replaced from day one. So what, if he's been about some time, a good club would have used that to an advantage. In a Good club he would have been welcomed with open arms and immediately become one of the team. He would have received all the help and advice he needed to step up his performances. He could have become the best rider in the Draft system. I feel for Smart, who must wonder what he has done wrong. Because of the way he's has been treated, his confidence must he shot to pieces. They drop him at will and replaced when the feeling take them. Don't give me the crap about he wont make the grade, he'll never get the chance whilst he at a club like POOLE. As per usual, Poole does nothing to enhance this sport, they bend all the rules, they jump into all loopholes, they discard riders at the drop of a hat. and all for the good for the sport. And you wonder why people have no respect for your club..... Edit; Riders name!! Edited May 2, 2014 by GRW123
