I've heard of the cheering when riders fall off but I can't say it's been evident at the meetings I've attended (even Dudley) but today as I stood on the 1st turn at West Row I actually witnessed the whole of the 1st turn clapping when Ben Morley fell off and hit the fence in Ht 13 and I was astonished. Just saying !!!!!!

Ive heard it at Mildenhall a few times unfortunately but it seems to be creeping in everyhehere

I used to go to Mildenhall pretty much weekly as a second track until a few years back; now the cheering fans is one of the reasons I rarely go, or if I do go, I effectively try to stand where there are as few people as possible to avoid any cheering (it's not that I'm anti-social, it's just that I struggle not to react if I hear cheering, and I don't want to get into arguments). Sad to say since then I've heard it at other tracks. (I'm not saying its just Mildenhall - just in my personal experience, I'd had it worse there. Obviously I can't speak for recent years.) I know people say 'it's a reaction to how it will affect the team' etc, but my first reaction is always shock/concern at the crash.

I must be one of the 'bad boys'!

I have to confess allowing myself the odd cheer when an opposing rider either falls, touches the tapes or suffers an engine failure because it means more points for my team and frankly I don't understand how a passionate fan could say they never do this. I think it is only natural when the pressure is on in a meeting.

That does not mean to say that I will be applauding when a rider is lying on the track or goes flying into the fence at high speed. I won't. You can usually tell when its a serious crash (and I do accept that occasionally innocuous looking falls can result in injuries).

Nobody wants to see riders hurt - no matter who they ride for but I think a quick cheer needs to be taken in context.

Maybe I take it all a bit too seriously but I thought that was the point of supporting your team..

I'm off for my counselling session now!

I think your post is an honest one, and i fully understand your rationale. If im honest I too have cheered slightly if a rider falls or has an engine failure, but this is not that I wish any harm on anyone, no matter who they ride for, it just seems like the natural reaction at the time. It happens in various forms of sport so I dont think speedway is alone. Its the same feeling really that causes me to love the sport, when a rider gets through on the line to beat another rider.

I really like boxing and cheer when the fighter I am backing hits the other fighter with quality clean shots, as this is part and parcel, I wish no lasting harm to the other fighter other than him or her not being able to continue in that bout, basically the same as if a rider falls or has engine trouble, they are then unable to carry on, and a victory is ours !

It really would be bad if anyone actually wanted someone to be harmed, but I dont think that is the case, hardly ever, so good luck to all riders just fall off and get back up.

I'd personally say if a rider touches a tapes or has an engine failure at the line (or retires at the back/in a way that doesn't cause an accident) a cheer is fine, but very different to a crash. I try to remember that I could be stood next to that rider's family/partner at the time, and how they would feel.

You can usually tell if a crash is a bad one and fans don't usually cheer cos the rider himself has crashed and hurt himself but because their team has got an advantage.

Re the family standing beside you, they have to take it as banter and as above, if they want to stand within the speedway crowd they have to develop broad shoulders!

I know we'll always have to agree to disagree on these points ;)

It wasn't cheering it was clapping as if they felt their rider had been aggrieved and Ben was getting his just deserts (probably because he got a great gate and the referee pulled it back). That is why I raised it as an issue, which is wrong.

You know we'll be continuing this debate on Wednesday... and even if a crash doesn't appear a bad one, it doesn't mean the rider hasn't hurt himself.

The cheering was because the opposition rider had fallen while leading (Ben Morley had just passed Dan Halsey to take the lead) in an important heat which Mildenhall went on to get a 5-1 in. Mildenhall couldn't afford a 3-3 and so their supporters were simply delighted at Morley losing the lead.

I can't believe supporters that want to see a rider get hurt but unfortunately there are some out there. There is nothing wrong with supporting your team but cheering when there is a big crash is disgusting.

why????????????? Wednesday does not have Mildenhall/IofW riding does it?

I suspect bernie123,, both trees and rhidassa, are both local to Kings Lynn, and are probably attending the Kings Lynn v Heathens meeting, Im sure they will confirm this, so dont worry its not Mildenhall V IOW this Wednesday.

Indeed we will, and as I don't fully agree with what she says, I'll be continuing the debate in person

Cheering a rider falling is part of supporting your team!!! Deary me. Sorry but its not acceptable no matter how passionate you are. If it was your son riding and they fell no matter how inocious you would be ok with people cheering would you?

If he'd slid off on his own then I would have expected the opposition to cheer it if he was scoring points against them at the time. If he had gone flying into the fence or been involved in a high speed shunt with several other riders then that would be out of order. As I said.....there is a difference and most fans can spot a bad one.

I doubt any rider falls without it hurting a bit .......... I'd like to think that no fan would cheer because a rider has hurt himself but because their team gets an advantage out of it ........
