blueherb777
The Kent Kings website says of next Monday's match: "To help keep the famous Speedway name of the Dons alive, Wimbledon are Monday evening’s visitors at Central Park to contest the John Cearns Cup." That's not strictly correct. There is no actual Wimbledon team/club these days. That should of course read "a team labelled as Wimbledon" or perhaps as one poster on the Wimbledon Speedway discussion forum called it "Uncle Len's Select". So what it is actually not Wimbledon team/club.It is a fixture to keep the `Dons` name in the news etc.Roger has a long association with Wimbledon through his family so he is entitled to have the John Cearns Cup.There really is some train spotters on here keeping on about it.
Bryn
Hope there's a good-sized attendance at Central Park on Monday for this fixture and fully agree with the sentiments expressed by "AJ is King" above. Much as I'd like to be there myself alas I can't be in two places at once and will be at Swindon but, as I said, I really hope it's a good night down there and that any ex-Dons fans in attendance enjoy themselves. Â Well keeping the Wimbledon name in focus has succeeded but in some instances not for the happiest of reasons! SFTGNigel
SFTG Nigel Ref. Andre  More like ordered.  Yes, hence my quotation marks around it, to emphasise it was the official line.  I believe Simon Lambert broke his ankle last night so maybe Andre Cross will be reinstated in his stead? Guest
This has been posted on the Sheffield website in the past 48 hours. It concerns Simon Lambert who was named for the Wimbledon team. Any further news? :::::::: Sheffield website quote follows ::::: THE SHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE TIGERS suffered another horrible injury blow at Ipswich on Thursday with the news that Simon Lambert suffered a suspected broken ankle.  The likeable Brit has only recently re-joined the Tigers but he crashed in heat seven and was taken to a local hospital with the suspicion of a second broken ankle for him this season.  Speaking after the 60-32 defeat, team boss David Hoggart expressed his disappointment for Lambert; “It’s gutting really, Simon had a nasty crash and the consensus of the medics at the track was that it was probably another broken ankle.  “He’s at the local hospital now and in good hands, but it’s devastating for Simon and we’re gutted for him.”
iris123
Would you rather that Wimbleon weren't invited? Not sure you can invite a team that doesn't exist any more?It is difficult now after all this time to find enough riders with some connection to the Dons. One or two that acctually rode at Plough Lane?Robert Lambert for instance

Surely it is only right that former fans will have an opinion on a team using the Wimbledon name?Certainly feel that in the treatment of a former rider the promoters have shot themselves in the foot a bit.The idea of having a team called Wimbledon is to attract fans of the team.I personally have no problem with a son of a track raker and a grandson of a former rider.Good idea imo.Would have liked one or two riders that maybe rode as juniors there. But obviously in my situation i won't be coming over from Germany to see an odd assortment of riders riding under the Dons flag.Pity though that it seems some fans who might have attended have been allienated
waco
I would imagine that those concerned are more likely to try to put on an entertaining fixture filler ( because that is what this meeting is ) for the fans that have been supporting the team all season ,,rather than put out a non competitive side of retired has beens ,.just to please the non attending ex Wimbledon fans . The Caerns family providing the main connection for this meeting.... Apologies to any ex Wimbledon fans that attend Kents meetings on a regular basis i imagine that may include Parsloes 1928 nearly,, no offence intended
Shadders
Luke Bowen making his comeback, I presume for Kent... I thought I heard Chris Schramm's name announced at Rye last night, I'm guessing in the Dons side.
iris123
You might be right. But imo a promoter should be trying to attract more fans than they already have.I don't know of any promotion that has enough fans attending regularly.A fixture filler is always a problem.I remember Wembley and West Ham selects being put on as challenges.Would have thought the idea was to try and attract Dons fans along.Otherwise why not just put up a select side and call it Crayford or Canterbury and get some publicity in those areas and they may also become regular attenders?I'm not a lover of challenges or made up teams anyway. waco
I do not think any one is a fan of challenge matches, but in a small league,, Kent have done remarkably well to put on extra meetings all season to keep the continuity going each week, which in turn helps to maintain the very healthy crowd levels they have had all season.. Mondays two teams look well balanced and i would expect another good turn out to watch it

Shadders
Not sure if Luke is eligable to race in the NL... Was on a 5.57 average before his season was ended early by injury.
