screm
Berwick and Sheffield Speedway clubs have got together to organise a benefit meeting for stricken rider Ricky Ashworth. Ashworth, who is still in Hull Infirmary following a crash which rendered him unconscious on August 2, has been riding on loan with the Bandits from his parent club, the Tigers, for the past two seasons. The meeting will be held at Berwick’s Shielfield Park on Saturday, September 28 and will feature riders representing the two clubs. Berwick co-promoter Ryan Anderson said: “We thought long and hard on what type of meeting to put on for Ricky. This is the Berwick club’s way of doing something along with Sheffield. This has been a real tough time for his family and all those close to him in speedway and at work. “An Individual meeting was mooted but we thought we had to include Sheffield Tigers, his parent club, where he rode for almost a decade, so we are planning a special challenge meeting between the clubs, including guest riders.” The initial plan is a 13 heat formula plus a special second half trophy, four heats plus a final, with a cash award and trophy for the winner. Anderson added: “Obviously, times are hard financially all over and you just cannot keep asking for money, but as always we would expect speedway folks to come together for Ricky. “Our Bandits 2012 Group and Supporters’ Club have been brilliant with wrist band sales, track collection etc and this goes for tracks all over with the monies being collated in a special account for ongoing transfer to Ricky via Paul Ackroyd (Ben Fund). “We will try to get every race sponsored as well as the meeting itself and will be announcing deals as soon as possible including hospitality etc. “We must attempt to keep costs as low as possible and will work on that too.” Im starting a thread for this early as Im sure theres many people out there who will be wanting to make the trip to Berwick.Im sure someone will post the teams closer to meeting time as there may be one or two changes between now and then.
Steve55
Think this is a great idea by the Bandits & Tigers. I'm sure they'll be quite a few riders wanting to be involved and here's hoping that they make a decent figure to pass onto Ricky and his family. Wishing you well Rickster, keep pushing onto the finish line and get back with us. Hope to see him trackside soon.
Lord Antebellum
Great idea, hope both teams get a big-name guest, as suggested. The so-called superstars who didn't do the BenFund event this year let themselves down and a couple will hopefully grace this hugely-deserving occasion instead. I would have come up, except my beloved Falcons will be flying again at St Boniface that weekend, and I can't miss that!
screm
Newcastles Ritchie Worrall and Andrew Tully have been named as guests for this meeting, also there will be a new rider from Europe taking part if all goes to plan. The Berwick promotion visited Ashworth in the Salford Royal yesterday where he continues to make steady progress.

Daft comment really as I'm sure any rider asked to do this meeting will try to be there, be they big stars or not. screm
It happened a long time ago, so that is OK. Hmmmm. You can hmmm all you want, what happened happened,I guess its up to me to provide the positivity amidst a sea of gloom again. What I do know is we have a meeting to enjoy and support, for a worthy cause. Sorry, but a number of "big names" have already excused themselves, I understand. You may have understood wrong,Im sure there's been occasions where Berwick riders have avoided turning up at benefit, testimonial meetings at other tracks, it happens so get over it.It could be argued that Robin Aspegren has not turned up at a few Berwick meetings this season. Robinh88
Berwick riders not turning up? never would have thought it... I'm sure the clubs retribution would be swift, if even the slightest possibility became visible
Fromafar
Sorry, but a number of "big names" have already excused themselves, I understand. It is irrelevant who has excused themselves, there will be 2 sets of riders there that will put on a show for a good cause.

Absolutely, its sad to see a couple can only post negativity about a meeting where there's so much to be positive about. Still it takes all kinds I suppose. Berwick riders not turning up? never would have thought it... I'm sure the clubs retribution would be swift, if even the slightest possibility became visible It some meetings that would include most of the Berwick 1-7.
