Sky Speedway

Have you ever heard of silver surfers The stadiums are mostly run down with terrible parking and out of date Youngsters are to busy on commputers and smart phones to stand up for three hours watching about 17 mins of action

I wouldn't agree with that. Young people use phones and computers in a different way to the older generation. They play a more significant part of our lives now but they do not come close to replacing real life experiences like watching brilliant speedway.

The troubling numbers of young fans can be attributed almost entirely to the promoters. The inaction and lack of unity demonstrated by promoters year after year is the real issue here.

I'd have to double check this but if i remember correctly, whilst the court case initially seemed a great victory for pubs who carried streaming without a Sky subscription Sky found a way to stop them. They did this by pointing out that their company logo which is on screen at all times was copyrighted and therefore not allowed to be broadcast without their permission.

thats the point thou, that is correct and you can transmit there branding. but if you did your own internet streaming then thats not an issue is it?

Internet streaming a whole match is very very easy and low cost. Fans of the club could subscribe (£9.99 - £14.99 a month for example) and catch up with all the home meetings online. This is a brilliant way to reach out to everyone. The young, the old, the disabled and those who just don't have the time to attend speedway weekly.

And half the crowd as well. Bye Bye speedway then.

I think the place for 'streaming or recording your own home meetings' is to be able to show a 'highlights' package (with rider interviews and a competition/prize etc) or similar, to be used on clubs' own websites and social media to promote the real thing or the next meeting, rather than to show the whole meeting race by race. Most tracks have a 'ReRun film/production company' or similar at their tracks, so it shouldn't be too complex to get them to do a '5-minute' promotion package every week for the website/You-tube/facebook/vine etc. Fans who still want their own 15-heat DVD can then still purchase it if they wish.

What fee would a Rerun film/production company expect?

Having just begun our fourth successive season of live streaming Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey games, it is our experience that in fact the opposite is true.

There is simply not the money within UK Speedway to fund this, many clubs are already hand to mouth as it is.

Pleased to hear that about the Ice Hockey. My problem with any streams and packages is the fact that some fans don't go to speedway now because they can watch live speedway on TV every week. It might attract new fans, but conversely it has lost a lot of existing fans, some on here use it to condemn the sport they allegedly love/loved.

NB Having been involved with the Vipers at Newcastle, it's amazing the similarity of the two sports, both in their attractions and the ongoing probs.

there are many reasons i cant attend brandon on all the firday nights, normally family issues and holidays.

so i am lost to these meetings.

If i could pay £5 to watch a stream whilst on holiday/stuck at home with the kids i would do so,

this is a an increase in revenue not a reduction.

As for the sky coverage, if i wanted to watch Poole every week id be a Poole fan, i am not and therefore do not subscribe/watch sky.

Except that for Ice Hockey, you can usually sit down in some semblance of comfort - albeit cold - compared to a lot of Speedway tracks; and the matches don't tend to run the risk of being called off by the weather!

Surely this idea of streaming is if/when Sky are no longer involved, so that the only televised meetings will be what Eurosport currently cover. You must agree that promoters have really missed a trick - albeit in some cases for good reason - by failing to utilise the Sky funds to promote and attract new business!?

Having just begun our fourth successive season of live streaming Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey games, it is our experience that in fact the opposite is true.

Are you easily able to break down the geographical spread of your live stream viewers into maybe 3 categories - for example, a local category within 20 miles of Coventry, then the rest of the UK in a 2nd category and then overseas viewers in a 3rd category (especially USA/Canada who'll be watching Coventry's games around lunchtime their time when there won't be so much of their own domestic action in progress).

The reason I ask is to wonder if you've been able to gain enough useful revenue from overseas viewers to wipe out any lost revenue from local supporters paying for just the live stream instead of coming through the turnstiles ... if that overseas angle is working for Coventry's ice hockey, then live streaming UK speedway meetings with plenty of foreign riders taking part for our clubs could pick up useful revenie from Polish, Swedish or Danish subscribers wanting to watch speedway on nights which don't normally have any of their respective domestic meetings.

Absolutely - we can see the connections to our streams broken down even by individual town locations. When we first started streaming the hockey it was a natural concern that locals would stay at home and watch the stream rather than attend the game - the stats clearly show this not to be the case.

Thanks for the reply and it's encouraging if you feel the live streaming hasn't really affected the crowd revenue for the Blaze ... however, I'd still be a bit concerned, especially in borderline weather, that speedway could see more of a local switch to the streaming compared to what you've experienced in ice hockey.

This is/has proved to be good reading and very interesting. I am a Plymouth Devils fan and have been since its re-incarnation in 2006. We now have a progressive promotion in charge and although the team as a whole this season hasn't faired too well through injuries, I'm sure next year we ought to go from strength to strength, hopefully! The thing that amazes me is how Tai Woffinden can be so close to being our own World Champion, and no Media mention as far as I know of? Perhaps "synikalle" could not only help the Devils promotion, but this seemingly lack of enthusiasm regarding Tai, and British Speedway as a whole.

Having just read this I contacted a relative who is high up in the headquarters of a pub chain. Following the outcome of the court case many pubs and clubs now subscribe to broadcasters abroad and receive and show Sky in English for a fraction of the price that Sky charge in the uk. It seems there is nothing Sky can do about it apart from not supply the channels to European broadcasters, but I cannot see Sky doing that. Sky may try to claim that they own the copyright of a logo etc but there is no law against a foreign broadcaster putting out a signal that a UK customer can pick up. If Sky claim they own transmission rights of their channels in the uk they will have to take that up with the European TV companies they supply.

It would be interesting to find out just how many pubs and clubs have cancelled their payments to Sky but still show it via a European supplier.

They just need to freshen it up a little, perhaps a weekly round up show, highlights from some of the elite league matches of the past week which wasnt shown on sky. Cover premier league and National league in the round up to show just what british speedway is and how British riders progress through the system.

2 of the best matches ive seen this year was the premier league matches at Somerset and Berwick. Well prepared tracks, lots of passing and real racing. Be great to see more premier league matches on sky at the other racers track like Sheffield, Scunny etc

Show more individual and other meets like the pairs, 4 team tournament, British Final qualifiers, British U21 final. Freshen it up a little but still make the Elite league the prime player but still show what British Speedway is about.

Just a few little thoughts.

WHY???

If Speedway is on Television next year - I hope ALL Speedway is given a fair crack of the whip. If the Elite League has to lose some of it's status - then so be it.

You said it yourself "two of the best matches I've seen this year was the Premier League matches at Somerset and Berwick". I would like to see some National League Speedway too.

If Sky remain interested, they should forget about 'live' meetings and just run a weekly highlights package of the best races available to them. This could include league meetings from all levels - plus possibly some from abroad(?) - but would also have to include footage supplied by some of the clubs own video/production companies (not sure if this would have to be in HD or whether Sky would insist on HD quality if the show wasn't going out live)?! Clubs could also run an 'edited' version of the show on their own website as a promotional tool, to attract more punters to attend!

It would be interested to see what the difference would be in both viewing figures and meeting attendances!
