Rye House Rockets Verses Scunthorpe And Redcar 31/08 6pm

Recommended Posts

Not a fan of double headers and the problems associated with them. to dragged out, and the on the night injuries .. Still at least we won in good style ,both meetings, and can now look forward to the cup final .. Plenty of passes on a dusty track despite constant watering , made for along but quite enjoyable evenings racing. Best wishes to the injured riders for swift recoveries

I only have one regret from the night...and that is not having the courage to speak to Shadders. I really wanted to ask him about his interesting earring. Oh well, maybe next time...

Which one?

It's a shame this thread wasn't split into two, as both matches deserved a mention as they were so contrasting.

I've gotta say well done to the track staff who produced an excellent surface, which despite the dust produced lots of good racing and plenty of incident

Ben, I was told that Jorgenson may have a broken coxyx, but this isn't confirmed. I first thought he'd just lost some skin off his backside when he took a long scrape along the track as he fell, but it seems the initial impact may have caused the damage. Pontus mentioned on his Twitter account that he may have chipped a bone in his back. Whether this prevents him racing isn't clear.

Overheard Len speaking to a fan saying that it's unlikely that Jason Garrity will race again this year, something most of us suspected anyway.

I thought Nelson was superb in the Redcar match. I had to almost cover my eyes as he rode the boards at some stages. Whatever people say he is great entertainment when he's "on it". I'm not sure that he'll be able to show his best on the odd shaped Lakeside track.

Not sure what's happened to Ostergaard in the last few years, but he seems a shadow of the rider I remember at Reading.

Proper team effort all round from the Rockets, made for a very enjoyable evenings entertainment. I hope any neutrals and stay aways will consider returning, because when you get two teams that really want it, the Rye track can produce some great moments.

Just a mention of the crashes. Note that despite the lack of a air or foam barrier there were no serious injuries due to our supposed unsafe safety fence.

I thought the announcer had a mare and was getting loads of stick from those around me on the startline terracing. I too think the fanfare is an embarassment, get rid!

Not sure what Josh Auty's problem was after Pontus caused him to fall. I think he'd just had enough of Rockets riders bringing him down, but someone suggested he may have been having a pop at the ref as the start of that race was a little ragged.

Not sure who I'd like us to face in the final, because I reckon we'd struggle against either side. Obviously Somerset would be an easier journey for me personally.

Shadders, Josh was carrying a shoulder injury after Jason Bunyan caused him to fall in Heat 5. It's why Josh didn't come out in Heat 15..

All the best

Yes...finally. For a time there I thought I would have to inform Mother that she shouldn't expect me back tonight.

Anyway, whoever the person is that decided it would be a great idea to play a ridiculous trumpet sound over the tannoy system before every race, I hate you. 30 races plus numerous re-runs and each time this bleedin' trumpet sound was played. I tutted, I threw my hands up in derision but still it continued.

If you thought the old crackly 'Magnificent Men' tune they all march out to is God-awful, then you'll literally want to stab yourself in the eye with this nonsense. I mean really, who was it that heard this sound and thought, I know let's play this as the riders line up at the tapes, it'll really get the crowd whipped up into a frenzy of excitement?!

Having said that, there was an old chap by the starting gate who was constantly getting himself into a lather. He looked like something out of the old TV show 'All Creatures Great and Small' except he didn't have his hands up a cow's backside. Well, he was giving the referee a right going over. Cursing, shouting...at one point I thought I was he was going to march up to 'Race Control' and give Mick Postlethwaite a ruddy good telling off!

Well I'm back home now and as I sit here typing this with a hot beverage warming my cockles after a cold evening, I only have one regret from the night...and that is not having the courage to speak to Shadders. I really wanted to ask him about his interesting earring. Oh well, maybe next time...

I wasn't 'Uncle Len' was it?  :blink:

Agree with all you said, shame i was sitting within earshot of three Scunthorpe and one female Mildenhall supporters who never stopped slagging off all that is Rye House, place is a dump, track is rubbish, couldn't watch this crap every week, Rye riders don't like Scunthorpe riders they are always dirty against them, the crowd always cheer when a visiting rider falls off, insider knowledge that Silver owns half of kent and Rye is closing down with the PL team moving to Kent. Hope that they had a good night and got their £20 worth. Think last might shows that when you have riders like Douglas, Blackbird, Dyer, Birks at Rye then he racing will be good. Hope for a Somerset v Rye final cutting down on the costs a bit.

These people are obviously fools... I don't understand what people want from speedway these days. There were 30 hard fought heats with loads of incidents and good racing, all for 20 quid. 40,000+ people pay a fortune to go to Cardiff for the GP every year with half as much going on as there was last night and people are still not satisfied.

A little critical of the 'old fellow' surely? At least it is said that he goes every week and from his perspective is taking an interest in what's going on. :approve:

Enjoyed the meetings... Thought there was some excellent racing verses Redcar especially from Mellgren,Nelson and Bunyan....

The reserves looked very poor to be honest....and Olly was Olly....

As usual with Dye House took an age to run and there was the usual dust cloud hovering over the track...

I took a Newbee to the meeting and he said he saw the tractors do more laps than the riders... I said to him "count yourself lucky it's usually much worse than this!" :t:

Anyone know when the final is penciled in for?

Now I know he is not Thrillpool (or Shadders) of this parish I can honestly say he was a total embarrassment and maybe cost Rye House a couple of race points. With Ulrich Ostergaard and Tyson Nelson excluded for exactly the same offence his reactions were diametrically opposed with Mick Poss going from hero to zero for making the same correct calls.

I can't remember the riders concerned but thought that the Rye rider had taken the points on the line. Mr "Every Week" instead of cheering his man on stormed towards the referee’s box pointing in a threatening way, which is always indicative of what you are claiming has happened being incorrect. I couldn't tell but thought Rye had it but the ref gave it to Redcar. The response from the fence was like a cross between Jack Sugden and Basil Fawlty and had the terraces laughing. Such thuggery may have been acceptable in Al Sparrey's days but we shouldn't revere people for being total assholes in these more enlightened times. In his defence though the start marshall was also being a t**t in respect of the Nelson incident so perhaps they are related. A few less pies would do the start marshall the world of good and may help improve his eyesight. Anyway back to trumpet practice.

I am saddened to see you align the late Al Sparrey with thuggery.:cry:In his time he was one of the most dedicated and loyal riders to grace a Rye House team. A great favourite with the fans as well because of his tenacious style of riding.

I have to agree - I was embarrassed watching the exploits to this young chap... Obviously a few sheet to the wind or with extreme anger management problems..

There was one particularly close heat where the opposing rider piped Lykke (i think it was) on the line - it was plain to see to the whole world yet this chap started screaming and gesticulating towards the ref's box... :icon_smile_clown:

To some people Referees are always Mr. Magoo.

That's not to say that they never get it wrong though.

I have been standing every saturday night when meeting is on in the startline stand just in line with the starting gate for the last 10 years (poor old me ))) ) Half the entertainment of the evening is to watch the crowd between heats. The guy people are speaking of at present is known to me as 'old guy chewing a wasp', he's great fun to watch and see how close he gets to a coronary over the most minor of things. I have a mate who constantly moans from the time he enters the stadium to the time he leaves and over the last couple of weeks I have seen his blood pressure rise to almost bursting point as the fanfare sounds.

Take a chill pill people, its sport, its an enjoyable night out and off of the track it's not life or death.

And just because I join in with the fanfare and shoout it out as loud as I can, doen't make me a wind up artist does it Hehehehe.

Go, watch it live, enjoy. Home or away, win or lose. C'mon the ROCKETS

By half a bike length, but wasn't Ostergaard ahead of Kasper for the entire race?

I am saddened to see you align the late Al Sparrey with thuggery.:cry:In his time he was one of the most dedicated and loyal riders to grace a Rye House team. A great favourite with the fans as well because of his tenacious style of riding.

I think you may have leapt before looking here. If you check my posts throughout the one category of person I have never been rude about are the riders: quite the opposite I have defended their safety and worth against others who have said they are overpaid, greedy and pampered and moan about the price of admission, number of chips you used to get in the good old days and how much we could save if the riders paid fans to attend.

I referred to Al Sparrey's (someone I have never heard of I must admit) days as the era and did not say he was a thug at all; just that he rode in seemingly thuggish times, based on linking elements of your posts.. As well as revering said Al you had defended the behaviour of someone (dare I say whom I would assume is in your age group) on this thread who several posters on here saw being a total nob on Saturday night; with one expanding to say this is his usual behaviour.

I don’t see how when you do not witness something you can defend it on the basis of the person being a “fan” of longstanding. Clearly we had someone who will have been around during Mr Sparrey’s era being given licence to be a thug in more civilised times, which I feel is totally out of order. More out of order is that he is defended by someone who had not witnessed his excesses. If one of the many teenagers at Rye had behaved in this manner they would have no doubt been pilloried by those of more advanced years so to defend someone on the basis of being an old boy really sucks.

As a side I do comedy workshops at various venues; only £500 per day plus VAT, plus a percentage of any bookings taken as a direct consequence of my tutoring. I am sure this would assist you in extracting the irony from some elements in my posts but, other than thinking with a name like Sparrey he must have had a nickname the 50s, my insults are not aimed towards Super Al but at someone who would have been around to see him ride and the social values of the time, as perceived by me based upon reading this forum..

Still as my old grandma used to say, “Keep well clear of the boy scouts who wear long trousers”.

By half a bike length, but wasn't Ostergaard ahead of Kasper for the entire race?

That's the one. Must admit with his terminal speed I thought Lykke had done enough at the line but Ulrich had led all the way until then. I wasn't as close as you guys no doubt were though but still had a great view of the antics.

Al Sparrey may well have been before your time. He was a leading Rye House rider in the championship winning Southern Area League days, and later was captain of Yarmouth and also rode for Swindon. Before his speedway days, Al Sparrey was a leading grass track rider in East Anglia. His era in speedway probably between 1954 and 1962. In those days he was well publicised in the 'Speedway Star'.
