Rye House Rockets Verses Scunthorpe And Redcar 31/08 6pm

Recommended Posts

The 2013 Speedway season reaches the end of August with Saturday’s double header staging at Rye House.

First on track will be the Silver Ski Rockets’ Premier League encounter with Scunthorpe. The reigning League Champions have found the defence of their crown a difficult one… although last week’s successive away wins at Sheffield and Plymouth have given the Scorpions sudden hope of making the title Play-Offs. Their team includes Cardiff Grand Prix reserve Josh Auty, 2010 World Cup Silver medallist Nicolai Klindt and back-to-back Scunthorpe rider of the year Thomas Jorgensen, who also impressed Rye fans with a 13 point haul at the Hertfordshire circuit just three weeks ago.

Rye House team manager John Sampford recognises the threat at hand. “The Scorpions are very much the in-form team of the last two weeks, and have a lot riding on this match, so we will have to be at the top of our form to get the right result. As I’ve said before, you get nothing for nothing in this league; you have to fight for every point.

“I’ve spoken to Jason Bunyan, who has confirmed that he will be fit to ride on Saturday after his crash against Berwick. It shows his grit and determination; he is such a rock to this team.

“Jason Garrity remains questionable for Saturday. If he is unable to take his place, we have Ben Morley standing by for both matches. Ben has produced some excellent – and critical – displays for us already this season, so we have plenty of potential cover there.”

The Premier League clash will be followed by what has now become the defining moment in the Silver Ski Rockets’ 2013 season. Despite a seemingly relentless run of injury and misfortune – the club’s badge of “Generation Next” has often segued into one of “Generation Hexed” - the Rockets are still in there fighting in the Knock-Out Cup, and Saturday brings the moment of truth: the Semi-Final second leg against Redcar.

Redcar 48 Rye House 42 was the score-line from July 11th’s first leg on Teesside, which makes Saturday’s target totally black and white. With the exclusion of the Tactical Ride rule from the competition, there is no grey area in this one….

49 is the magic number.

While much of the ground work has been laid in the first leg, the Rockets can take absolutely nothing for granted against a Bears team whose own Cup future is at stake, and which has started a fair few of its opponents so far this year. 22 year old Australian Micky Dyer has been a revelation in only his second season of Premier League racing, with fellow Aussie Aaron Summers and Ulrich Ostergaard tucked in behind him. Third year Bear Matej Kus is actually at No.1, with his absence for the fixture covered by Thomas Jorgensen, who will therefore see double duty on Saturday, as a guest.

As Sampford reiterates, “The bottom line is that this is our most important match of the year. There is just so much riding on it.

“We achieved a very good result in the first leg, but now we’ve got to complete the job. We know our potential when we are firing on all cylinders: now we’ve got to go out and deliver on that.”

And, as he concedes, “Yes, 49 is the magic number.”

Teams (alphabetical order):

Rye House: Olly Allen, Pontus Aspgren, Jason Bunyan, Jason Garrity (if fit), Kasper Lykke, Anders Mellgren, Tyson Nelson

Scunthorpe: Josh Auty, Ashley Birks, Lewis Blackbird, Ryan Douglas, David Howe R/R, Thomas Jorgensen, Nicolai Klindt

Redcar: Micky Dyer, Thomas Jorgensen, Ulrich Ostergaard, Hugh Skidmore, Aaron Summers, Carl Wilkinson, Steve Worrall

Supporters are reminded that Saturday’s meeting will start one hour earlier than normal – at 6pm – in order to accommodate the scheduled thirty race programme.

Admission prices are: Adults £20, Seniors £18, Teenagers £8, U-12s FREE

It can only happen in speedway. Rye House have Scunthorpe and Redcar as visitors. Here's the two teams.

Scunthorpe: Josh Auty, Ashley Birks, Lewis Blackbird, Ryan Douglas, David Howe R/R, Thomas Jorgensen, Nicolai Klindt

Redcar: Micky Dyer, Thomas Jorgensen, Ulrich Ostergaard, Hugh Skidmore, Aaron Summers, Carl Wilkinson, Steve Worrall

Oh the joy of the guest rider system. And why the National media thinks speedway is something of a joke!

Scunny don't actually have much riding on this match - just pride.

It would be great if we could finish the Premier League campaign with five straight victories.

Looking forward to a double-helping of Tommy The Gun :D

All the best

Sorry, there's only one Tommy Gun. You'll have to think of another name. May I suggest Tommy the Gating Tart?

Shadders, if you've seen TJ fly around as many opponents as I have around the EWR, you'd be aware that doesn't really fit.

No, Thomas Jorgensen is Tommy The Gun. Tommy Allen will just have a get new nickname. Not sure what it should be. In Olly's case it would be easy. It would just be Olly Allen R/R, because that's what most people think his name actually is, because that's what normally appears in the programme.

I'd have thought someone so closely associated with the Ben Fund wouldn't have made a joke out of a rider who's been out injured for most of this year. Shame on you 😉

Tommy Allen has been 'Tommy Gun' since 2003 or 2004 when in Rye House Raiders. Its your new kid on the block that needs to get a new name :t:

Ah, Thomas Jorgensen is Tommy THE Gun, not Tommy Gun.

Technically Tommy Allen is "the" Tommy Gun. Thomas Jorgensen is "a" Tommy Gun

Shadders, well the Plymouth fans have given Rasmus Jensen the nickname of "Razzer". There is ONLY one Razzer - one of my favourite riders of all-time :approve:

All the best

Rob

We agree on something at least :)

Nothing on Jason Garritys' Facebook since last Friday, so I assume he's not had any practice and will not be in the Rockets line up on Saturday, unless anyone knows different?

Well Ryan Douglas certainly is "Flyin"

But it IS his nickname - Flyin' Ryan Douglas :t:

All the best

Rob

What is it about Scunny riders stealing other riders nicknames? ...It's "Flyin" Ryan Fisher...
