Sheffield V Ipswich Pl 29-08-2013

Agree with Grazgp, Barker would have got a few less than Doyle.

Andre looked like his old self for 5 heats, hopefully he can carry that on for the last few meetings. Facu had a couple of good races and showed what he can do when he gets himself in the mix from the start line. Greenwood again showed he has potential and had a solid meeting. Lawson was solid, but coming up against Doyle so many times was always going to limit his score. Wells.... Has definitely got Owlerton dialled in now and just gets better and better, hope he stays next season. Maassen looked ok, he debuted against a very strong team who are in form and after everybody else has been riding at this level for the past 6 or 7 months. He showed promise in his 3rd ride and looked fairly tidy on the bike, think he will do ok but will need a decent team around him to let him settle in on a 5 point average.

Think tonight was a point gained by Sheffield and 2 points dropped by Ipswich

At the start of the meeting I would have took a draw, but by the end of the meeting I have to say I felt deflated as I thought Ipswich were there for the taking.

The big difference was Jason Doyle who once again I agree with others who say that he scored more points than what Ben Barker would have got.

The Ipswich fans can crow all they like that its a point gain as they don't have a decent record around Sheffield, their record is no different to Rye House's around Sheffield and Rye turned us over not once but twice and against a lot stronger Sheffield line up.

With no Barker I don't see Ipswich progressing in the Play Off's and I don't think they looked particularly good tonight.

Don't know if he comes on the forum (riders would be daft if they did I suppose!!) but I would like to publicly thank Olly Greenwood for his efforts for us this past few weeks. He has given us 100% and if there is room for a three point rider anywhere for any club I would give him a go. He seems a top lad and would want to give him best wishes for the future.

Got agree with you wholeheartedly, the lad has got something about him, and I would definitely like to see the club maybe give him a run in the team next season.

Something I did find out that I did not know is that he is no longer a Scunthorpe asset I believe Scunthorpe sold him to Coventry last winter.

I thought he was a Scunny asset and Nigel Hinchcliffe confirmed that he was a Scunny asset on facebook when questioned?

I pick up my information from the Scunthorpe fans forum, where Rob Godfrey had said that he had agreed to sell Ollie to Coventry.

Maybe that transfer had not gone through would be interesting to find out.

I don't believe the 8-day guest rule applies if it's your Number 1 rider. I may be wrong - who knows what the rules are on this or another day? To the point of this topic, I would certainly have taken a point at the start of the night. That has got to be one of the weakest teams we've ever put out on track, with all due respect to the riders concerned. Andre certainly got his mojo and Ricky was superb out of the gate and when put under pressure. Maassen will get better with more track time, to which end I'm surprised he wasn't practising after the meeting. I have to say I thought Heeps was worth more than his 3 points - very spectacular and fast but just seemed to get himself in the wrong place out of the starts.

Lawson guested for Sheffield twice at home in 7 days, have the rules changed?

As I understand it, the 8 day rule for guests does not apply to the home team.

My understanding is that it doesn't apply to number one's, home or away.

But they don't have to ride at Sheffield again - so you can't judge their performance last night on what they may or may not do elsewhere. It could be psychological, but Owlerton has never been a happy hunting ground for the Witches.

Also, it's not correct to claim that Barker would not have scored as much as Doyle. On another night, anything could have happened ... engine failures, exclusions, Risager maximum ... OK, not "anything"! :)

Spinny's right about Doyle and Barker - the latter has always looked unconvincing at Owlerton. Then again, Stead would have scored more than Lawson.

Let's give the Tigers some credit. That was a battling performance, probably the best I have seen them give this season. Wells took the lead with another consistent display and has put the doubters very much in their place this season. Compton looks more like the rider of a few years ago every time I see him, only the graveyard gate 4 catching him out in heat 15. The young German lad was anything but outclassed and may yet be a prospect for the future. To me, though, the really important contribution came from reserve. Albin showed glimpses of the fine rider he can be and Greenwood's beating of Ellis and Hawkins was vitally important. He may yet get a deserved PL place next season.

The mood was 'deflated' on the picnic benches - I think they all would have settled for that result at the start, but clearly hopes were raised only to be dashed. I don't think they even noticed me putting down my programme board and maligned hat ready to join in the celebrations when Sheffield won. How times have changed.
