Next Meeting At Scunthorpe? Now Confirmed As Sunday, September 15th

Recommended Posts

PLEASE continue to check the press for details for the next meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

Promoter Rob Godfrey was hoping for the next meeting to take place on Friday, September 6, but this is now unlikely, as an opposing team cannot be found for this date.

The next meeting now may take place on September 13, or possibly another date. Details will be revealed on the club’s official website and in the press in due course.

Godfrey is planning home-and-away challenge matches against local rivals, the Sheffield Tigers. There is also the possibility of challenge fixtures against the Leicester Lions.

The challenge matches at the Eddie Wright Raceway are planned to take place over the popular 13 heat formula that operated in the 70s and 80s, with old-style tactical substitutes, plus a Rider-Of-The-Night competition in the second half.

In Sheffield's case, we will be looking to making tactical guest appearances rather than substitutions

I did hear a rumour on Thursday night that there would only be the 2 league matches and the PLRC before we closed our doors for the season, it hopefully looks like that won't be the case.

What is the rider of the night competition and second half, I am not old enough to remember the 70s and 80s.

Rob G announced on Monday it would be contested by the top six from each side. In which case, it's the traditional Rider Of The Night format, which was 3 qualifying races, and then a final contested by the 3 heat winners, plus the fastest second place rider (the announcer used to give two times for the three qualifying races, one for the winner and one for the second place rider).

All the best

Rob

Back in the 70's I seem to remember the second half would start with a "junior" race for "second-halfers". The top two would join the fourteen team riders in four qualifying heats with each winner going forward to the grand final. The final could be worth a few quid if it was sponsored. (While we meander along memory lane, does anyone remember the "coloured ping pong balls in a box" that was shaken up to decide gate positions? ...........I'll get me coat.)

Back when speedway was proper entertainment the old vulture races for reserves/2nd halfers were sometimes worth the admission on their own.The noise a bit of dust and the smell of Castrol R, small boys with a crushed coke can on there left shoe while making engine noises and racing in a circle against there mates. The good old days.
