Pirates Of Poole
Is this now a chance for Sheffield to step up into the top league of BS whatever the format will be? It is now up for sale and a sleeping giant of speedway in GB. Edited September 19, 2013 by Pirates Of Poole
Bagpuss
While I agree with Orion in principle I think we've reached a point where change is absolutely necessary to keep the league going. The losses one or two clubs have reported are scary and clubs can't keep paying out money they can't afford. I've been told that only two EL teams don't owe their riders money and the EL can't carry on like that. Â Its time for strict pay scales to be enforced. Admission can't go up any more and ideally needs to come down a bit but most importantly of all for me we need a bigger league with more fixtures and teams to have their seven riders present more often than not. I believe R/R, guests and blank weeks on the calendar are starting to matter more to people than team strengths on the whole. Â If we get the infrastructure right we'll be able to 'water up' rather than down in the future.
SteveLyric2
Whatever the new structure of the leagues to reduce costs to promoters, part of the equation to move forward and attract some fans back must be to also reduce the admission price and then publicise it - widely!! 2 people at £12 is still a better return than 1 person at £17. Plymouth Pirate
Cant we have doubling down instead of doubling up. The eilte team has the rider for all their meetings and the premier team has two riders in that position.
Anzum
British speedway need to use Tai Woffinden. He could be world champion on Saturday. The promoters of all clubs need to work together with Tai and get him as much media focus as possible. We could have a world champion who wins it with a broken collarbone. Horse racing had a campaign to get McCoy to be BBC sports personality of the year. Speedway need to at least get him short listed. Everyone on here are already speedway fans the sport needs more people through the turnstiles. Lots of people don't even know the sport exists.

Anzum
I agree but my example was that a sport all got together to promote its most valuable asset. Speedway is too driven by differences that needs to stop for the good of the sport and Tai is someone to promote to people outside the sport. SteveEvans
Sometimes you have to cut costs in any business. But you also need to give something back to increase value for money for your fans, whatever that may be. Look at all the things that have been cut since the 80's - cut, cut, cut. 2nd halves, Junior teams, top riders, amount of fixtures - and STILL its in the toilet! It takes more than a winning team to bring In fans - it takes bringing the whole show and experience up to the 21st century (from the 1970's).
Woz01
Will Leicester be looking at joining the EL next year after they were rejected a place in 2013?
Mike.Butler
This title could have read Elite League 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 etc etc...It's no longer an Elite League, it's not offering VFM and it's rotten to the core ...Self interest is consigning us all to oblivion....Until the ridiculous situation re teams racing some teams more than others, matches being run in terrible conditions and fans being charged nearly 20 quid for 10 heats there is no way back...There are so many promoters who in other sports would be on a charge of bringing the sport into disrepute..they should take the blame for EL foreign riders taking the p*ss too as they empluy them. tell the fans that's the team and then we run with R/R and guests. It really is a shambles....i can't believe these guys want to be associated with this as it stands...and some here wanted Neil Machin to be part of it!? including Nigel Pearson I recall..Nige, you're better off in the NL (grass is always greener....) skthecat
Â Â It was tried in 1997 & was quickly dropped the following year. Â That was then, not now, things are different now... Â Will Leicester be looking at joining the EL next year after they were rejected a place in 2013? Â To be honest, not sure..... It must be considered though, but not knowing what the league structure is going to be next year, its nigh on impossible to say either way.. (in my opinion) NTO
rob tatum
Excellent post by Mike Butler agree with all that. The sport needs major surgery & then some but will it happen NOOO !! I wrote a letter to poole pirates & somerset rebels suggesting they let in under 16s free with a paper scorecard the reply from somerset was not financially viable & as yet have had no reply from poole. Due to the cost we have taken the kids just twice this year we just can't afford to go more. Our family love the sport but the sport (league speedway)don't seem to like the fans.

I would have expected a totally different response from both clubs as their respective cost base must be so different!! Somerset own their own stadium and (I think) get all the revenue from everything at the stadium and have no rent to pay. Poole only have admission fees, programme and ad sales, merchandise and sponsorship, whilst having to pay rent and huge amounts to 'top' riders. If its .not financially viable. for Somerset then it surely can't be for Poole - on current income/cost calculations!! That's not to say I don't disagree that costs to everyone need to be reduced, ensuring that some savings are passed onto the fans.

Yes speedway needs change but on the whole a good product and just as entertaining as other sports! Try taking a family to watch a TOP football match and it would cost you a whole lot more!

rob tatum
I agree a top footie match is more expensive & is ridiculously priced so ill compare elite !! League speedway to my team bristol rovers price to get in similiar but rovers really try to attract the kids lots of under 16 s for a £1 offers etc & the stadium although not the nou camp or old trafford does not appear to be on the verge of falling apart as do most speedway stadia. Just my opinion I await the flak from those who seem to think everything is fine on planet stuck in the stone age speedway

rob tatum
Football is different so I guess we just give up & carry on as we are. After watching maybe the best GP ever tonite it shows what a marvellous sport speedway can be unfortunately the elite league & all the muck associated with it is rubbish. Imo of course
