Somerset V Ipswich Friday 23rd August

Recommended Posts

No Doyle or Barker as Birmingham already riding.

That's a poor show - these were the headline acts, and in their one race alone on Friday, that shown why.

Poor decision I'm afraid to go on that date.

A pity we could not get a mid week date to avoid a clash, as council seem more amenable now days, obviously there must have been a reason. Will probably give this a miss with Doyle and Barker absent, but will depend on guests, if Somerset got Hougaard or even Zorro to guest (I think his average may just fit) both a big attraction.

So which is the better of two evils - guests or r/r? Much as I would like to see the likes of Hougaard at the OTA again, would it not be fairer and more economical for both sides to agree to run r/r at no.1 in order to provide a match between Somerset and Ipswich riders, rather than a match that could be decided by who can book the best/most motivated available guest? I realise this may be short-changing the punters a little, but maybe there could be a small concession on the admission price to compensate, and as I say, surely 6 Rebels versus 6 Witches is a more representative contest? Any thoughts?

Great idea imo, come on Rebels and Witches management make a stand for people power, let`s go for r/r for Doyley and Barker.

I suppose it comes down to how confident each team is with how R/R would cover the loss of their No1.

The Rebels probably expect Doyle to score 13-15 and the Witches 11-13 from Barker.

R/R for the Rebels is more likely to get close to that score than for the Witches.

So its a strange one - the Rebels may be better off with R/R but the fans miss out on the' big name' No1s or the home fans see full teams but risk a points swing against their team.

I have a cunning plan! Why not change the date?

I'm with you on this one OT - I can't honestly believe people are thinking that both teams running with R/R at no.1 would be good entertainment.

I want to see the best riders and I want us to win. Having R/R for two of the very best that the League has to offer would be taking the pi$$ somewhat.

Well if you just want to see the best riders Najjer, give your £17 to Mr.Ford and go and join Starman ;)

I agree that the best scenario would be 2 full strength sides if another date were possible, but my question was whether fans would rather see just Rebels v Witches without the influence of guests, as would be the case if it were Poole rather than Birmingham riding, as Grajczonek and Tungate would both be unavailable, and r/r would then be the only option for both teams......So I'll put you down as a 'no' then?

I'm also pretty sure that the remaining 12 riders would still be able to provide 'good entertainment', and as I said, maybe at a slightly reduced cost at the turnstile, or with a free program perhaps.

I completely see what you are saying, and for a challenge match I would be 100% agreeing with you - but for a league match where winning is absolutely critical given our situation and chance to get in the top 2, playing 'In the interest of fairness' doesn't cut it for me.

Regards your first point, I'd settle for having Lubos Tomicek back at no.1 as oppose to that ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Weather doesnt look good for the 2nd try tomorrow (13th)

Was intimated tonight at Foxhall that restaging would be Monday if calked off again.

Monday would certainly be difficult for guests as almost everyone is riding!

As Birmingham and Swindon are already scheduled for Monday fixtures, does this mean they would have first dibs on double-uppers Barker, Doyle, and Morris, if Somerset vs Ipswich was subsequently restaged on the same Monday ?

As they have registered their fixtures first, I believe they would.
