BANDITS AIM TO DEFUSE ROCKETS

Berwick’s speedway Bandits are back on Saturday night, facing the potentially-powerful Rye House Rockets in what will be the final Premier League fixture of 2013 at Shielfield Park.

With Bandits’ duo Kozza Smith and Nicki Barrett expected to be fit after last Saturday’s spectacular crash (Barrett fell off, Smith was unable to avoid running into the fallen Dane – both went to hospital with head and neck injuries) the border club’s only absentee will be French No 1 David Bellego, required by his nation to contest the European U-21 Championship Final.

Precocious Tweedmouth schoolboy Liam Carr will replace the Frenchman, riding at No 2 in the line-up.

Swift Swede Sebastian Alden, who was disappointed with a five-point scoreline in his first match of the year for Berwick, has explained his problem as being down to a misfunctioning engine.

“It was new one, which I expected to be just right for Shielfield Park” he clarified. “However, it just wouldn't run properly, and when I drained the oil I found fragments of metal floating in it – something was clearly very wrong”.

Sebastian will be mounted on a different engine for the Rockets’ visit, which will be the first of three matches in as many days for the Bandits.

“We go to Leicester on Sunday, and then to Rye House on Bank Holiday afternoon” said team boss Ian Rae. “David Bellego is back on Sunday of course, and on Monday we’ll be using Liam Carr again, this time at reserve in place of Paul Starke”.

Saturday’s teams will line up:

Berwick: 1. Sebastian Alden, 2. Liam Carr, 3. Robin Aspegren, 4. Matty Wethers, 5. Kozza Smith (captain), 6. Nicki Barrett, 7. Paul Starke.

Rye House: 1. Oliver Allen, 2. Pontus Aspgren, 3. Jason Bunyan (captain), 4. Tyson Nelson, 5. Anders Mellgren, 6. Kasper Lykke, Jason Garrity (if fit).

RICKY ASHWORTH COLLECTION: During last Saturday’s meeting, representatives of the BSC (Bandits’ Supporters Club) circulated the stadium to take up a collection to aid stricken rider Ricky Ashworth (see below). Amazingly, the assembled supporters contributed no less than £1,120 to help the rider’s cause. Special wristbands were also available (and will again be at the Track Shop this Saturday) against a donation for supporters to wear as his fight goes on. As suggested, these are like “yellow ribbons” tied around trees until soldiers return home. Banndits’ supporters have vowed to wear their wristbands until Ricky Ashworth regains consciousness.

RICKY ASHWORTH: LATEST: As promised, news of changes in the condition of Ricky Ashworth will be carried by the club website, the club’s official Facebook page and media briefings.

Ricky’s situation remains as relayed to fans on Saturday: That whilst Ricky’s condition was still the same, and he was still sleeping under the expert care of staff at the Intensive Care Unit at Hull’s Infirmary, he has been yawning in front of his watching family and has been reacting to pain tests applied to his arms and legs.

Ricky is however still unconscious and under the intensive care..

His family are obviously heartened by these changes, and want to praise the Infirmary staff, and thank the many, many speedway people who have sent messages of encouragement at this time.

SUPPORTERS’ CLUB: The popular Bandits’ Supporters Club (BSC) have a coach trip to Sheffield on Sunday 22nd September to the annual PLRC meeting. BSC members £15.00 non-members £20.00..

On Saturday, BSC members will receive 10% discount at the Track Shop on all club merchandise.

Saturday 31st: Home meeting against Newcastle – BSC Hog Roast in the pits after racing!

All BSC members will enter the Roast free, but of course non-members are very welcome to attend, enjoy a drink and some Hog with friends, fans, riders and promotion of both clubs. Hog Roast admission will be at the pit gate after racing: £5.00 for Adults and £3.00 for children

MORE SPEEDWAY: Next Saturday (31st) Berwick stage the first leg of the annual Tyne-Tweed Trophy with Newcastle Diamonds. Tapes up, as always, at 7pm sharp.

That looks a decent Rye House Team if Garrity is fit.We will miss Bellego I fear.

Lol Carr at no2? They just trying to bring on another home defeat? Rye by at least 6.

With Bellego being lost in France in love this saturday,Berwick can only use a NL guest to cover him as the European Under-21 meeting that Bellego is taking part in carries no facility.

Some of you Bandits fans clearly need a history lesson

2007: 51-41... One of the weakest looking Bandits sides of recent years against a Rockets side that won the PL play offs

2008: 60-33

2009: 51-42... Even with Adam McKinna & Greg Blair at reserve it was comfortable for the Bandits at the end, despite the performance of the veteran Andrew Silver

2010: 50-40... Despite having Pepe Franc at reserve and the one of the PL's best riders of 2010 Linus Sunstrom, the Bandits won comfortably enough in the end.

2011: 43-41 (abandoned after heat 14 due to curfew)... The closest we've ever been to a win at Shielfield Park in my years as a Rye House fan. The only Rye House PL meeting at Berwick I've missed since my first visit in 2005, due to a rained off meeting earlier in the season.

2012: 50-40... Despite the Bandits losing both reserves in heat 2 they cruised it in the end. The whole evening was all about the Charlie Gjedde circus, but the main reason the Rockets came away with nothing was the shocking performance from guest Ricky Kling.

Rockets arrive on the back of a very difficult meeting at Edinburgh on Friday night. Who knows if we'll come away from that unscathed, mentally and physically.

Question marks over the fitness of Jason Garrity and Olly Allen who looked a little rusty last Saturday at home to Ipswich.

Anders Mellgren is having an real up and down season. Brilliant one week, less than brilliant the next.

Kasper Lykke looks down on confidence and can't gate to save his life, something you can't get away with at Berwick.

As far as I know this is Pontus Aspgrens first visit to Berwick, so who knows what we're gonna get from him?

Add to that Seb Alden must surely have a better meeting than last week and Kozza announced as fit to ride and it all points to a comfortable home win by 10-12 points, even with Liam Carr replacing David Bellego.

In fact if the Rockets win I'll kiss Dick Barrie on the centre green after the meeting

Aspgren at 2. I wonder if that's right?

I should think they'd checked with Rye House before announcing the line ups Ian

Home win i reckon

Good to know Seb has been for 2 seasons, but can't find and engine set up. This was the was the same rider that 10 years ago was going to be a Top Swedish rider

Well the above tells you why he's a 7 point Premier League rider

Last time I saw a Berwick programme, Sebastian Alden still held the track record. The first post on this thread quoted him as saying the new engine should have been just right, but wouldn't run properly, with metal appearing in the oil. Nothing about having the wrong set-up, which is usually down to ignition timing and/or carburrettor jets.

But don't let facts get in the way of scarcasm, eh?

seemed to be running fine for the hammarby meeting last week when he had two wins. But hey lets not get in the way of those facts.

Jan Graveson holds the Leicester track record? But Jan is a top rider? Unless there is a new TR holder

The last time I checked a programme Seb Alden's average was 7... so that's based over 20-30 meetings? right?

Cheers

Rain is forecast for overnight in Berwick, some of it will be heavy.Any rain will die out during the morning leaving a dry afternoon.

Giving that last weeks meeting, apparently, was nearly lost to the weather after a heavy shower or two last friday night, one has to hope the track staff have seen the forecast and prepared the track accordingly.

News of Jason Garrity isn't favourable (for Rockets fans anyway)... Seems his two laps at Sheffield last night have resulted in him being in sum (his spelling) pain this morning, so his participation in this meeting is doubtful.

We`ve had rain in Berwick overnight, though nowhere near as much as was forecast.Still very cloudy at the minute and you wouldnt be surprised if it started to rain soon.

Berwick are certainly weakened by the loss of Bellego, but I still expect them to have to much for our visitors tonight.

A lot depends on which Rockets side turn up. The one that won at Leicester, or the one that turned over and had their belly rubbed at Edinburgh.

I'd be satisfied with a point, but I doubt we'll manage that with riders out of form or carrying injuries.

Minds seem set on the KOC now that the play offs are out of reach

Presuming Jason Garrity isn't fit yet (he missed Edinburgh last night) the Rockets face another meeting with an NL rider at No 7.

Who he will be doesn't seem to be known yet.

That'll swing it very much in the Bandits favour
