screm
By all accounts, Berge went to the highest bidder of five clubs, and Glasgow seem to be overpaying him(with money they don't have?) while Paul Starke was set up for Berwick until getting his EL gig and choosing to withdraw from the deal on travelling grounds. Neither loss should be that significant, and in the case of Berge, the club has wisely chosen not to get involved in trying to gazump others just to get hold of a potential five-point asset who may or may not prove better in the long run than three-point Liam Carr. Who comfortably outpaced the young Frog when they last met, I believe. I bow to your superior knowlege on the details of the deal that took Berge to Glasgow, and your knowlege on the deal Berwick offered Berge, if there was a deal offered at all of course. The Glasgow promotion, of course, may see that any out lay now will be a sound investment, especially if Berge proves to be any good. Also, last week most Berwick posters saw Berge as an ideal kind of signing, now he`s joined Glasgow it seems young Berge isnt quite as good as he was. Very odd.
Heedthebaw
So will Kevin be our number 1 next season, or has that still to come? I for one would be happy with that providing there is solid back up and a very good reserve, our recent history of No 1's is not a lot to shout about with the exception of Ricky, but he had more than his fair share of injuries
neil
Robert Branford is going well in Australia at the moment, wouldn't mind having him back as he looked ok in his short spell with us. Would come in on a 3.00 so would leave plenty points for the top 5. Some might disagree but him and Carr would be ok at reserve, both should finish with 3+ averages so don't see it as a risk. Great to have kevin back too, will do a solid job and good team man.

The problem with going with two 3 point reserves is if one of your 1 to 5 gets injured early in a meeting, you are then effectively going with three 3 pointers for half or more of the meeting which is what Glasgow did all last year and that didn't have the desired effect,I hope we don't go that way

Neil can be a right haver sometimes. Although I know where he is coming from. Better to have a team of riders that are likely to maintain or increase their averages than a load of risky assessed riders. It's all a balancing act, with quite a bit of luck required, I guess. neil
Tero would do a goodjob at reserve, he would get his near 6 point average over the course of the season, there can be no arguement against that, however i wouldn't see him putting 1-2 points on his starting figure though, and with him at reserve as opposed to a 3.00 rider would mean having say a 6.00 rider in the main body as opposed to a 9.00. Its all a balancing act, going with 2 x 3.00 can work as long as they are good enough to improve and increase on their starting 3.00, imagine if both do what Lewis Kerr done for Newcastle last year?

Some good points there, Neil, and a balanced point of view. I must say, your return to the forum brings a refreshing intellect with it.

neil
If we are to go down the new rider route we could do a lot worse than Michael Hartel, 18 year old German who would come in on a 5.00, recently beat both pawlicki's in the German open http://speedwayresults.com/result.php?type=1395&season=2013

SCB
Clinton Leitch. Was Scott Smith not with them at the same time? I seem to remember 3 Aussies in second half races at Brough. Rusty was the obvious pick of them, even then. Rusty was over in '99 (signed for Glasgow that season) while Scott Smith come over in 2000 and sign for Newport in 2001. No doubt in my mind if Scott had taken it serious he'd have been a bloody good PL rider. In 2002 he got his average up to 9 but he spent all the money he'd earned on fags and beer rather than bikes. A real character though, remember him hobbling around Swindon on crutches fag in mouth and two bottles of beer but able to celebrate every time Wato and Smart hit the front. He finished that season at QM on a 6.85 average, a guy I know who sponsored him with 2 Finn Jensen tuned engines was given them back in a holdall at the end of the season, blown to bits. still remember him best for his celebratory wheelie when he bailed off to miss the tractor and his bike ended up parked upright on the back of the tractor's rake as the tractor continued on it's way
