DEVILS VISIT EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY

AFTER A BREAK OF 14 DAYS, speedway returns to the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm), with the Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions hosting the Plymouth Devils in Premier League action.

It’s the first PL action at the track, since Ricky Ashworth’s accident brought the Scunthorpe v Berwick match on August 2nd to a premature halt.

Ricky is still unconscious and under the intensive care of the staff at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Wrist bands to raise funds for Ricky and his family will be on sale at the meeting, at £2 each.

The Scunthorpe management are eager to show their support, and they hope fans will purchase the bands.

Promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We now need to help Ricky’s family. They are travelling from Salford in Manchester to Hull.

“He’s got a fantastic family who need our support now.

“They are the ones who are sitting there waiting for news. They will be the people who give us the good news when he comes out of it.

“The first thing we’re going to do is get wrist bands with ‘pray for Ricky’ on and sell them.

“Whether you’re religious or not, that’s a nice thing to say. It means you’re thinking about him and we need to think about him.

“Every penny will go to Ricky Ashworth and his family. We’re going to have 500 to sell on Friday.”

The Scorpions will be without both David Howe and Ashley Birks for the visit of the Devils.

Howe, the club’s all-time top point-scorer, made the decision to take some time out of speedway, after struggling with his confidence.

After making that decision on Saturday, the unlucky Howe was injured later during the same day, in a crash in a World Longtrack Championship round in Poland,

Howe has broken his left arm, although a hospital visit has revealed that his right wrist (also feared broken) has escaped a fracture.

Meanwhile, Birks aggravated his scaphoid injury, after a fall at Eastbourne on Saturday while guesting for Lakeside.

In a tweet, Birks said: “With the end of the season coming up and a hand that doesn't seem to be getting better, I'm afraid I'm going to have a week-and-a-half off.

“I will only miss two meetings going to go see a specialist this week. I will get it sorted so I can come back and score like I was.

“Sorry to everyone. I really want to be racing - I hate seeing Scunthorpe & Swindon race without me.”

Frenchman David Bellego, who scored paid seven in place of Birks at Workington on Sunday, will again guest for the Scorpions on Friday, while rider replacement will be in operation for Howe.

Admission Prices for Friday:

Student/OAP: £12.00

At the moment, Ryan is performing the best of the 2 reserves so i would move him to 7 fot team points scoring(no7 v no7 3 times). Do not allow the oposition reserves to score more than us.(in theory)

#pray for Ricky.

Usual decent EWR meeting, with the highlight a storming heat 13 contest between Bech and Auty.

Plymouth really seemed to have picked up two superb signings in the two Danes, because Jensen was equally as impressive.

Agree, was really impressed with Ramus Jensen,EWR seemed to suit him!!

Nice to see a tidy sum go into the Ashworth fund also,

Jenson, Bech and Kurtz were all good value. Bech was very quick but made a right pig's ear of his Black and White ride and that was that for the match. R/R for Howe makes Scunny stronger although it is sad to say as much. David has been a great servant to Scunthorpe but is his time up as a force in sport?

No, not just yet

Good meeting last night... can't really add to what others have already said about Jensen and Bech, Plymouth got a good pair there. Todd Kurtz impressed too. Great overall performance from Scunny though, particularly impressive show from Nicolai Klindt...and young Ryan Douglas, he's riding superbly at the minute. Best wishes to Kalle Katajisto, hope he heals quickly from his injuries. As for David Howe, sincerely hope we've not seen the last of him, quality rider, great bloke...going through a rough time with injuries at the moment, bit of time out won't do him any harm. When he gets back on it, i've no doubt, he's got the enthusiasm and will power to get back to his best.

Well said, David. Glad to see your still on here replying to your doubters. You're still a hero in my eyes, with the injuries in 2012 curtailing further improvement at scunny(as posted previously) & you, personally, getting in the top 10 average riders in the PL. Will gladly see you in the Scorpion colours in 2014 so don't discount us because of a few numpties that doubt you. Injuries take it's toll & sometimes you need to be out their racing when you shouldn't be, for a wage as it's not a hobby for you lads, it's a job, a dangerous one at that.

A great show by the Danes just need Klindt to show a bit more craft of the racing lines to overtake at the EWR. When he gates, he is hard to catch. Kurtz showed that you don't always have to ride in the dirt to pass he he mode numerous moves up the inside. Very impressed with Jensen & Bech didn't take long to have a liking to our track, also, bar his t/r ride where he went too wide on bends 3 & 4 but his race with Josh in ht 13 was awesome. Also, nice to see our riders doing a 'Rye House' & team ride to victory.

#prayforricky

A nice amount collected for Ricky's family to help out in these difficult times. Around £970 collected at the gate rose to about £1150 on a further walkround by our turnstile girls.

Kalle got about a 5cm long cut under his chin. Hurt his neck a bit but nothing serious. Got this info from his facebook-page. Maybe a bit better next time. Any idea how they crashed? Im sure he will score some serious points soon. His self-confidence seemed to be top level when I saw him riding in Finland last time.

Kalle & Hynek came together on a tight line exiting bend 4. Both got up fairly quickly, thankfully. Kalle looked like he refused treatment, then went down on 1 knee where he then received treatment.

How good was Jensen Scunny fans?

Rasmus Jensen, for me, was the pick of your 2 Danes. Chased Auty in ht1, filled in behind Bech with Klindt not far behind both in ht5, won ht 8 beating Auty into 2nd who was getting close enough to challenge, team rode out in ht11 by Jorgy & Ryan but not far behind. Infact, just nosed ahead of Jorgy at 1 point but then repassed, if i remember out of bend 2, deserved his ht 15 selection but adrift of the other 3.
