Guest mart W
How about a team made up with Welshmen ..... 1. Freddie Williams 2. Phil Morris 3. Eric Williams 4. Tony Atkin 5. Leo McAuliffe 6. Cyril Francis 7. Jon Erskine 8. Bob Hughes. Not bad considering we haven't got too many riders to choose from, and a World Champion in there as well ! norbold
Ian made one World Final in 1957. His appearance created a new record by becoming the third brother to contest a World Final. He scored three points and came 14th. But he was a top man at Swindon in the late 50s and early 60s and was instrumental in Swindon winning the old National League in 1957 and breaking up Wimbledon's winning run. Interesting........ wonder if any other team can come up with a like team. Plus we havnt mentioned Leigh Lanham,Savalas and a couple more. Certainly Peter Moore and possibly Ray Cresp in the other team.
norbold
Local riders also included: Mick Hines, Trevor Jones, Ted Howgego, Dave Gooderham, Kevin Jolly, Andy Hines, Colin Cook, Nigel Flatman and Ben Howe. I don't think many (if any) other teams can match that sort of home grown quality. And, of course, even Billy Sanders, although Australian, started at Ipswich when he was only 16. Yes as I said there are some others, but I dont think Ben Howe is one. He certainly lived in Crawley from around 1993 and Billy Saunders lived at Hadleigh about 10 miles from town. norbold
Talking of Ipswich juniors. I've just come across a report of an exhibition match race held in 1992 at Foxhall when the 14 year old Leigh Lanham beat the 13 year old Scott Nicholls.....
