Arson fire
Luck with injuries will play a massive part between now and then.... If any of Doyle, cook, barker, Bach, Worrall etc gets injured, then all of a sudden teams are vulnerable home and away against the better sides. Nutz
Likewise Somerset - unlike Newcastle though, we've not lost anywhere by more than 8 points yet and scored a minimum of 41 points wherever we have been. Â Bar the slip up against Edinburgh, our form this season has been incredible up until now - we look untouchable at home now with the form of our top 4 and with our ability to keep the score close or win away, that is why we look massive contenders when the play offs come around. Â Agreed... Â However, if you look at the facts, there are only two teams that have picked up points in every away match so far... That's Edinburgh and Ipswich (though I do say this before our trip to Owlerton on Thursday!!!!!!). 41pts away from home means no league points whatsoever (unless there are points missing) so you might as well score 21 as 41... Prior to the Play-off final of course, otherwise nothing else matters. Â Newcastle, Ipswich, Somerset and Edinburgh all have very similar records. Rarely beaten heavily away and prominent at home. Top riders heading each team in Cook, Worrall, Doyle and Tungate and solid back-ups. Of the other two (Workington - my second team and Redcar), although very good sides, you feel they could be vulnerable every now and again. Â As for Rye House overhauling them??? A win at Leicester against a weakened team doesn't make you play-off contenders!!! You may well challenge Scunthorpe for the 7-12 position cup thingy but nothing else. Â however I thought it was the top placed team picked one opponent, then the second placed team picked, then the first again and finally the second? Â You're right which is what I said - and if Newcastle finish outside the top two, then they'll be chosen last of the 4 teams as I don't think anyone will want them in their group. Think this makes finishing top, absolutely critical if you want to get to the final. However, I can see Newcastle finishing easily in the top 2 (probably alongside Somerset) so it may well be that we are last to be chosen. skthecat
Is there a tournament this season for the teams that don't get into the play-offs? Cannot remember seeing/hearing anything to indicate it? Cheers, Â Never to Old..

Absolutely - but I was referring to the play offs, where you can finish 6th and win the League title because of your ability to keep scorelines close away from home. Halifaxtiger
As always, comaprisons with other sports only have limited value but its rare that there isn't some sort of play off - entry to the arguably the biggest football league in the world is partly decided by one, for example.  While we might all have our own individual preferences, it is surely what benefits the sport as a whole that counts and what must decide the way to go. There's no question that the play off matches pull in bigger attendances, create far more interest and generate more excitement - as Rob has accurately said, the contrast between the damp squib ending of 2011 when a large number of meaningless matches were played out and the fantastic end to the 2012 season is a stark one, and I think it is clear that in terms of what is best for the sport play offs win hands down.  For myself, I was a dyed in the wool fan of top of the league wins the league until I went to the amazing Scunthorpe-Mildenhall NL play off final in 2011. The second match was undoubtedly the best I have ever seen and had the effect of completely changing my view.  Does anyone know when the cut off is ? racers and royals
Looks as if the top 6 are done and dusted-but who finishes 1st and 2nd might not be sorted until 23rd/24th matches-Newcastle look favourites to me-just because of the home matches left. Think I could have been a bit premature-Leicester to replace Redcar in top 6 ?
skthecat
How about the top 5 go into the play offs, teams finishing 7-12th play off for the 6th spot!!!!! eeeeeeeeeeekkkkk!!!! Playofftastic! [Only Joking]
redlead
After last nights dismal display by Redcar, then Leicester are definitely favourites to take the 6th place.

In addition now that becomes a relatively meaningless fixture (even though its a place match) whereas previously it would have drawn a bumper crowd. seanmuffe
Didn`t think I mentioned the " championship "only 1st and 2nd in the top 6-big difference ...sarcasm. Great league anyone out of top 6 could top league though likely to be one of four the team that finishes top deserves that right to be called Champs although unusual to have that many pretenders that's just what you need to get interest but no first we have second phase the thing that makes play off's look good. Meaningless fixtures to make one fixture look good is that why crowd's are lower for league matches now(plus economy etc etc) save the money for one meeting....we will agree to differ.

Lord Lucan
That's not a half bad idea as ideas go, finish 12th get ten more matches, qualify for the sixth spot that you clearly don't deserve, then, win the play off's and be called Champions!!!! Rags to Riches scenario, you could make a film about it!! Kerrrr ching?
racers and royals
just been looking at the Premier league table and the 6th and final play-off spot is still very much up in the air. it`s likely to go down to race points as Leicester and Redcar are unlikely to get anything from their trips to Newcastle and Rye house respectively. Current position 6th Leicester 41 pts for 1049 against 1041 7th Redcar 41 pts for 1028 against 1028 Will Leicester avoid a heavy defeat at Newcastle and can Redcar keep it relatively close at Rye ? Â Not quite so clear-cut as just these two - Workington must be looking down at these two below them with a little trepidation. The comets have two difficult fixtures and, although they've got a healthy average, a couple of hefty defeats with just one of the other two pickking up points could see the Comets miss out.
