spiegal
Sadly have to report the death of PAUL JOHNSON..PJ..the famous "Flag waver" from Perth. An amazingly extrovert character who was based at Foxhall in the late 1970 and featured at various World Finals at wembley..etc. He was always great fun..at times barking mad..but had some great ideas and made friends easily throughout the Speedway world.....Thoughts are with his lovely lady Edna..and Kim & Penny his daughters. RIP >>PJ....was more than great pleasure to be your friend. James Edited August 7, 2013 by spiegal

The White Knight
Every track should have a Paul Johnson, would add a bit of razmataz... It would certainly help to jazz things up a bit.
Guest
I am reasonably certain that Paul Johnson was also "in action" at least once at Wimbledon in the 1970s?
dontforgetthefueltapsbruv
From my childhood I have vague memories of a bright pink flared suit - is my memory playing tricks on me?

25yearfan
A great character who added much to the Ipswich speedway show back in the late 70's! Probably the most memorable flag marshall I've ever seen in my long association with this great sport!

Bruiser McHuge
he was a charactet...he was the flag man at Claremont speedway in Perth and rose up to do the 1981 World Final at Wembley....amazing that a flag waiver can make a name for himself and actually have kids wanting to get his autograph...not many flag waivers do that !!! How did he end up at Ipswich ?....was he spotted in Australia and asked to come over ?....

Reviresco
Remember Paul well from Foxhall in the '70s and at Wembley in '81. My memory probably fails me, but did he not have something to do with the introduction of the 16 Lapper at Foxhall too? A great showman who added to the experience of a speedway meeting when it was a great show. RIP Paul.....

Reviresco
Yes, I remember "Barbie" too. Thanks for reminding me James. What good times they were at Foxhall. I see that the EADT today has a mention of PJ's passing and mentions that John Berry saw him at Claremont Stadium, Perth WA and persuaded him to join the Witches management team as Marketing Manager. Guess that's where the introduction of the 16 Lapper was hatched. Lots of Love to Paul's family and friends worldwide.
Sparky from Sheffield
Paul toured round a few tracks plying his trade in the late 70s/early 80s. He certainly came to Sheffield. He was also the start marshall at the two day world final in Amsterdam in 87. I have photos of him I took then in his pink flared suit and flat cap. A true character and a real athlete with the flag. How DID he jump so high?
