::: FORWARDED MESSAGE sent by Bert Harkins ==== Jon Stevens and The Dons Den will be exhibiting at the Celebration of Speedway at Paradise Wildlife Park on Sunday 26th February so come along all you Dons' fans and find out what is happening at the Farewell Reunion. Paradise is signposted from Junction 25 of the M25 and is easy to find. Free car parking, BBQ,Rider interviews, Unsilenced bikes started up on the hour every hour, Win 2 tickets for the Cardiff GP, it is all happening on 26th, so "Come On Down"!

I hope the animals don't get too spooked! (and I am not meaning speedway fans!):wink:

It's a pity that there couldn't have been a separate speedway farewell event. It would have been nice if ex riders like Kelvin Tatum, Trevor Hedge, Roger Johns, the Luckhurst's, John Davies, Gordon Kennett etc etc, turn up and mingle and say goodbye!

An all speedway goodbye event would indeed have been a nice idea. But who would have financed and staffed such a venture - and how many people would have turned up anyway?

From the various images that have been placed in regard to the Sunday, March 12 event, some rider names have been listed as likely to attend.

Sadly, so far the organiser has not yet issued a detailed background as to what is schemed - apart from the image adverts. For my part I would like to see something specific very soon in this respect.

I cannot remember from when, in the days when there was speedway at Wimbledon, this happened:

A lot peed off that I had been unable to get a ticket for this but only a fraction of the stadium will be open so capacity is far less than when speedway was last there. Only the back straight was open last time I was there. Although you could stand on part of the third bend a huge hoarding obstructs the view 100%. I reckon 2,000 tops will be the capacity now.

As a resident of Morden, and a confirmed NIMBY, I am a bit worried that the address of Wimbledon Stadium on these posters is shown as Wimbledon Stadium, Morden - I'd love Wimbledon Speedway to have a new home but Not In My Back Yard thanks!!!

How does this Wikipedia analysis of Morden-Wimbledon Stadium fit in with your views? I am not a local resident and apart from knowing how to get from Tooting Broadway to the stadium have no ideas as to its actual local geography.

Why does Speedway get no mention in the above publicity material gustix.

I cannot believe that Stock Cars were more popular than Speedway.

Briggo, Vic Duggan, Oliver Hart, Ronnie Moore, Tommy Jansson, Geoff Pymar, Norman Parker, Eddie Jancarz just to mention only a few. I would have thought that Speedway would have had loads more support with all the above luminaries - am I wrong?

The publicity material is stock car orientated because it is being provided by Spedeworth Motorsport who have been promoting car racing there since 1962. There has not been an active speedway promotion at the stadium since the end of 2005.

It is only through the co-operation of Spedeworth Motorsport that former Dons' rider Jon Stevens has been able to stage a speedway memorial event on Sunday, March 12. As it is, this is only being staged as part of a mainstream stock car meeting.

Official figures for the 4 all ticket meetings in 2017 is 3000 on general sale, plus 500 complementarys (for mechanics etc)

Capacity set by council or h&e (whichever sets it) is 3500.

Thanks again gustix. :t::approve: :approve:

The latest Poster that mentions speedway riders attending the event on Sunday, March 12, 2007:

Think this should read 2017. :t:

Yes indeed. The date year is 2017 NOT as previously given 2007. I have amended the original entry. Thank you for drawing attention to the error.

Thanks for the heads up. I assume that the fire brigade would be involved in setting the capacity, quite rightly from the means of escape point of view, but that wouldn't take into account ability to see the track. Whilst there is a largish area for standing on the old 3rd bend, if the screen they had last season is still in place, you wouldn't be able to see the track from there, although you could safely evacuate (ooh missus). I saw the orignal reference to the "full house" as a comment on the inability of speedway to attract a crowd compared with oval racing for cars. OK no speedway team at present attracts 3,500 but the full house sign is hardly indicative of an enormous crowd in attendance, especially for such a historic event in a city of over 8 million. Even so with 3,500 it will be very tight, although no doubt the mechanics will be allowed in the glass fronted areas on old bends 1 and 2, which fans weren't allowed to access when I was there last year. Still unhappy not to have been able to get a ticket for Brisca event though but brown stuff happens.
