pandorum
Yes but it did probably add several dozen people to the attendance so by speedway standards an outstanding success
The Know
BSI are interested in money and will do what ever gets bums on seats. Didnt work here as place looked less than half full.

salty
ISN'T that the point of a commercial operation? Yes. But the crowd was poor (as it was last year at Mallila), so maybe they need to look again.
Guest
My youngest son who is married to a Czech girl and lives in Prague didn't know anything about the SWC until late on Saturday afternoon while out with his oldest 8-year-old son they saw a poster advertising the event. They didn't attend. Out of interest, what was the attendance?
PHILIPRISING
I DIDN'T agree with the decision to go to Prague with a very weak host nation seeded to the final but I can understand trying to get away from the cycle of Denmark and Poland, probably the only two countries that can attract a significant crowd. As a matter of interest, if the final was held in the UK with GB seeded to the final, how many people would attend? They didn't attend. Out of interest, what was the attendance? THERE were huge posters right along both sides of Wenceslas Square and in other areas of the city. There are literally millions of tourists in Prague but I doubt that attending a speedway event is high on the itineraries...

In 2002 at Peterborough the place was packed out with no Great Britain in the final. I think we just appreciate seeing the World's best rider's on show as it doesn't happen over here very often these days. If Belle Vue get it the place will be rammed with or without home representation

Guest
HOW many people 'packed out Peterborough?' You haven't come up with a number... And so far, I have yet to see a figure (provisional or otherwise) for the attendance in Prague last weekend? If Belle Vue get it the place will be rammed with or without home representation What sort of crowd do you actually expect to see at Belle Vue if this happening materialises? salty
Three World Finals have taken place in GB in the "BSI era". Peterborough(2002)Poole(2004?)and shamefully.....Reading. If I recall the crowds for the first two weekly events, with rounds at Sheffield, Eastbourne weren't too bad and compared favourably to the crowds when similar events were held in Denmark and Poland. The crowd for the round at Lynn has been good, but the question remains whether there would be sufficient support for events when England aren't on track. Three sparsely attended finals at White City in the 70's and early 80's and the lack of WTC Finals in the past few years suggest British Speedway is unwilling to gamble on the crowds supporting the current format. I can't see the WTC coming to the UK until the Belle Vue stadium is ready. Might be a longish wait....

The first 2 rounds at Eastbourne were very badly attended even with GB racing. I would guess less than 1,000 for one of the meetings. On another point I personally very much enjoyed going to all meetings and seeing the event form begining to end and would do the same again it event was held in 1 country. Re seeding and hots participation my answer would be to host the week long tournament in the country of the holders (not Aus) and seed them to the final. PHILIPRISING
I AM not trying to stir up anything ... just asking what people genuinely think might be a realistic attendance figure for a SWC Final in the UK. There is no hidden agenda.

Grand Central
I AM not trying to stir up anything ... just asking what people genuinely think might be a realistic attendance figure for a SWC Final in the UK. There is no hidden agenda. I don't think anyone was suspecting there was. It's just that with either of your two hats on. We would have thought you better placed to have accurate figures from the past. And even a better idea of future expectations. But clearly we were wrong. PHILIPRISING
IT is not about the past ... far fewer people attending speedway in the UK now than even a year or two ago. Just over 5,000 at KL last week. How many more for a Final there or Peterborough, Poole, wherever?
Grand Central
Pretty much just the same as at KL for a mid week meeting, as that looks to have been a similar crowd for the last few years despite any wider decline. And a few more if held at a weekend, especially somewhere a bit more accessible like Peterborogh or Coventry. I can't imagine it ever being more than 10,000. No matter who is in the final. PS... Phil. It was you who asked how many were at Peterborough in the past. So a little strange of you to say 'it is not about the past'. SCB
Poole sold out. EDIt: Now having read the previous page, maybe 10k. If Poole sold out it was 3,900. Don't believe the bull posted on here by some Poole fans. Thats the capacity as allowed by the council for Poole Stadium.
Hunty
Have the Speedway World Cup final a week after Cardiff GP! That would be epic!
pugwash
If Poole sold out it was 3,900. Don't believe the bull posted on here by some Poole fans. Thats the capacity as allowed by the council for Poole Stadium. But there was a temp stand built on turns 3-4 for the 2004 competition so crowd could exceed that capacity. Assume that the management applied for temp capacity increase to suit or just kept taking the money until there was no one left outside but there were more likely 6000 there for the final. Don't think that the council have a bloke outside with a clicker so pack 'em in. btw SCB where did you get that figure? There probably is a limit imposed based on toilet facilities or something but Poole stadium can actually hold up to 8000 Edited July 23, 2013 by pugwash
