Birmingham V Lakeside 10/07

Recommended Posts

As last night was a major PR exercise to attract new fans, could I ask the following

As a new fan, how was I to know a Speedway Programme was available, and where was it being sold?

I brought me kids with me, they were interested in the Bikes being used, why was there not one on show, to demonstrate the weight and skills that the riders have to show.

The kids wanted to see the Riders in the pits, yet there is no view at all, of what is happening there, all secret and private except to the privileged few!

Why is half the track restricted view from the main grandstand outside.

Why is there no low level racing sound available in the Bar to try to inject some atmosphere through the double glazed units.

Has anyone considered a large screen on the bends to replay previous races or meetings during the 1.45 hours spent awaiting races, assuming a meeting is over within 2hours, also this could be used to promote the clubs sponsors.

Why was there no meet the riders in the bar after the event?

Why was there no first timer meet and greet to explain the rules of Speedway.

Just running a meeting and expecting potential supporters to turn up is not enough in my humble opinion.

Some good points and suggestions, can you PM your contact details so I can call you please?

Cheers

You can go into the pits between 6 and 7 pm, but when the bikes start warming up, the spectators are aked to leave (it's noisy!). The riders are usually available walking back from the gate to the changing rooms after a match. They don't have the time to go to the bar like they used to.

I like this Birmingham side but they need that bit of "flair" needed to win the Elite League title.. They are a solid machine.. Just like last year but I feel that they need something more and something special.

Michael Jepsen Jensen or Greg Walasek for Ben Barker would create that title winning feel.

If you had seen Ben Barker last night, you wouldn't post such abject nonsense!:D

MFE - think you must have missed the fact that we had a reserve at number 7 who was 'uncompetitive'.........despite beating Harris, Auty, Barker and King (twice!) during the course of the evening?

As mentioned, pits at a number of tracks are now open pre-meeting. Certainly at Lakeside, our riders (and many away riders too) make a lot of effort to engage with fans. Myself, and the other Lakeside M/E's, also used to talk many supporters over what checks we had to do on the bikes pre-meeting, etc. and many riders are only too pleased to pose for pics with the kids sitting on their bikes, signing autographs, etc.

However, when the bikes are warming up, it becomes quite a dangerous enclosure. Engines and silencers become extremely hot; there are tripping hazards everywhere - and that's clearly not a safe environment for children. Moreover, during warm-up, this is the time when mechanics are busy making last minute adjustments, and riders need to focus their minds upon their racing.

I'm certainly not knocking what you are saying. Engagement is key - but there are limitations. As suggested, get along to the pits early doors and enjoy your time.

Dave, well I think your comment shows just how low our expectations have fallen and we are satisfied to accept the mediocre, rarely is a night at the Speedway (anywhere) an exciting event anymore, and it should be, because it is a great sport.

Are you suffering with depression old chap... or were you at a different meeting to the rest of us? ;)

After the meeting Ben barker, Josh Auty and Danny King came into the crowd on the home streight and were signing autographs and posing for photos. Got to admit though the programmes were well hidden - should be available near the entrances, several newbees near me didn't know they were available.

Great racing and atmosphere, although the track got slicker towards the end- I think Brum have got the most exciting team in the league, all of them are racers and plenty of Brits to boot. Well done to the Brum promotion, hope they can keep these crowd levels for the rest of the season

Only recently have the prog sales been moved inside ..there was a shed by the corner of the stand selling progs but for some reason it was removed ;)

I thought the Hammers put up a reasonable show Swiders could have scored more if he hadnt burst through the tapes.

I suspect if the Hammers had won one poster on here would have had a different outlook on the meeting ?

Against an injury ravaged runaway league leaders you mean. ;)

Robins should take all 3 points if they want to live up to the pre season favourites billing.

That would be Poole and you know it.

Its a rumoured kidney infection that sidelines Smolinski.

Not a kidney infection - kidney damage (bruising) caused by the fall at Monmore on Monday. Also possible tear to his spleen - according to his website. Complete rest ordered so will miss the Longtrack GP3 in Marmande this weekend.
