Robbie B
There's a brilliant new design to the Speedway Star website. A modern cleaner look to it, with loads more info and stuff. It now has a downloadable SGP programme covers, many thanks to everyone, at the magazine for this. Edited July 3, 2013 by Robbie B
SGP
BEEN long overdue. I wonder when, if at all, they will provide a downloadable version of the magazine via such channels as Apple's News Stand? The new website does look good though, if only this sort of investment and design was consistant across the club websites. The BSPA's isn't much better either. Grand Central
Big improvement, no doubt. When I looked on my pc. But still terrible on my iPad. And wholeheartedly second a move to downloadable mag. Please. Edited July 3, 2013 by Grand Central
PHILIPRISING
AN online/downloadable version of Speedway Star is still very much on the cards but not as simple as you might think. Our production guys have their hands full as it is let alone converting all the pages, plus some additions, in time to go online on a Thursday morning. It is quite a time-consuming operation especially in the pages need to be viewed in both landscape and portrait versions. Then there is the cost of licensing the software, which has to allow us to take subscriptions. The one that currently ticks all the boxes for us and would be the most convenient to convert the printed edition would cost over £10,000 per year. Had no idea those were the costs. But just like all the talk have been having on here regarding the way forward for Speedway. That investment is still the right course. To be left behind would be a tragedy. I'm sure you would think that SS is more go ahead like BSI than a dinosaur like the BSPA,
PHILIPRISING
BUT right now we all have to watch the pennies. I am sure it will happen but we need to be confident of attracting enough NEW subscribers to make it viable.
Humphrey Appleby
AN online/downloadable version of Speedway Star is still very much on the cards but not as simple as you might think. Our production guys have their hands full as it is let alone converting all the pages, plus some additions, in time to go online on a Thursday morning. I think it's a matter of evolving or ultimately going into decline. Whilst I appreciate that much of the Star readership is quite traditional and probably prefers a printed mag, they will not be around for ever and an online version may also pick up sales from people like me who can't be bothered to go to the shop (if you can find one that sells the mag). I struggle a little to believe that once things are set-up, it's much if any more work to generate an online version of a printed magazine. Where also would the Star be now if there hadn't been investment in modern ways of doing things back in the late-80s? Just to put one's money where one's mouth is, I'd be happy to send you a year's subscription in advance if you're willing to produce an online version. PHILIPRISING
NOBLE offer Humphrey and may take you up on that ... one day soon. It is more work than you might imagine (especially an App version, for example, which has to have the facility to be viewed in both portrait and landscape modes and requires the pages to be adapted) and we don't have people sitting around waiting for something to do. We are very keen to go down this road but, as I say, need to be confident it will prove viable. In the meantime, put your sub money to one side and await the call... TheReturn
Very good website, far better than majority of speedway websites. Ref the track directory (great idea), might be a good idea to make it a clickable Google Map. Depending which website software you used, this is fairly simply to create.
