Elitserien 2013, Round 9, Tuesday July 2nd

Ward looks as though he is on a different planet. So fast!!

I didn't get to read it but saw an article headlined the other day (or today) that he reckons he is better than ever since his enforced lay-off. What a battle for the SGP we would have had if he had rode all season.

Some exhilarating swoops taking place so far and more than one racing line as Dave Goddard expertly pointed out where they are crossing over too.

Mention of the 'World Champion' Chris Holder lining up at the tapes gets me to wonder how the 'old' world champions such as Ivan Mauger and Ove Fundin would have fared riding in several leagues during a season? What got me pondering is that i remember that World Champions in the old days seemed to rarely get beat in (UK) league racing during a season (or did they?). Yet i've had cause to comment several times over the last few seasons how the top GP riders, including the champion, can have poor scores on several occasions in the various leagues.

Surely it`s about time that premier sports started captioning their interval re-runs of previous matches-one minute Hancock is racing live the next he`s in a recording-someone tuning in for the first time wouldn`t have a clue !!

R&R very much agree with that, it has to be very confusing for anyone new tuning in and it must often take a while before it sinks in that "hang on" i'm watching four different teams. Many a time i've dashed in from the kitchen or loo thinking the interval is over too lol.

Quick message to Dave Goddard - I believe Dackarna means 'Tyres' not 'stars' - that's just the logo on the race jacket.

Great work Dave.

No no no way you're both way wrong.

Dackarna was another name for the people who lived in Småland and supported the rebel named Nils Dacke.

So Dackarna pretty much means the Dacke rebels.

Oh wow..i just Google translated tyre from English to Swedish and it came up with 'däck' so thought rmc was 100% correct.

Dackarna now my favourite team if they 'rebels' and a motley crew of Anarchists etc :) lol

UPDATE: OMG! maybe not, Wiki says "Dacke was executed, posthumously quartered, and his limbs were sent for public display in larger communities that had supported him during the rebellion. Gustav Vasa ordered the annihilation of Dacke's entire family, but showed some leniency against those who had given themselves up. Thus, the unity of the realm was restored."

Come on Piraterna!

Ah, thank you. I was previously misled.

Back in the eighties when I was occasionally working with Swedish speedway Vetlanda were racing as 'Njudungarna' which a local journalist translated as 'followers of Njud'. Thanks for clarifying.

It would be interesting to have a list of translations of the Swedish team names.

I can give you a short explanation:

Ikaros Smederna, Ikaros is the title sponsor, Smederna means the smiths taken from Eskilstuna's legacy as a Smithting town.

Västervik/Skepparna, Västervik is the name of the city. Skepperna means something the shippers.

Indianerna is the Indians

Vargarna is the Wolves

Vetlanda is the name of the Town and Elit is the name sponsor.

Hammarby is a name of a city area in Stockholm and it is also the name several clubs in Stockholm. Hammarby is a common locality name in Sweden.

One of the reasons i add in brackets to the racecards the location of Swedish teams is because i was suspecting that some of the words prefacing the teams are either nicknames or sponsor names. It would be good if Ghostwalker, when time permits, could add to his page one in the Swedish section the translation or defining of nicknames/sponsors.

Aha! i had it right regards Smederna (sponsor and nickname part too), Indianerna (nickname), Vetlanda (sponsor) and Hammarby. Having said that i was unsure at the start of this season.

Thanks, there seems to have been a move towards geographical names rather than nicknames in recent times. I covered a meeting at Hammarby in '85 - trying to remember the then team's name - suspect it might have been Gamarna,

Valsarna is taken from the former valsverket (rolling plant) in Hagfors.

Rospiggarna is a designation of someone living in the coast area of the Uppland province,

this coastal area is known as Roslagen which have given Sweden its Finiish name Routsi.

Örnarna - the Eagles

(Radio)Piraterna . The Pirates taken from the expression Motala Piraterna: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlunda_radio_transmitter

Gnistorna - the sparks.

Griparna - the Griffins, the Griffin is a symbol for many provinces including Södermanland.

Yeah there have been several teams in Stockholm, Gamarna, Eldarna, Getingarna and now Hammarby,

Also a good effort from Smederna have resulted in a huge defeat but a secured aggregated bonus.

It was delightful to introduce the Hammarby meeting as 'welcome to the Gubbangens Idrottsplats' (apologies for spelling) - it had my director stifling a giggle - badly. Seems that Hammarby are in a neighbouring arena.

As for Rospiggarna, I'm in fact a touch disappointed they're not 'red pigs' - well I didn't pick up much Swedish on my trips sadly....

The Swedish riders that rode in the Uk, also rode in the Swedish League in those days.. I suppose that now they can ride in three different leagues, maybe they are more able to afford a few bad meetings!

I do hope Ghostwalker was telling the truth there about Dackarna Mr Goddard ;-) Interactive speedway!

Always enjoy these Swedish meetings and it can't be easy filling in the gaps where the international feed shows a static long shot while the Swedes cut to their own presenters for comment and interviews. Not an easy job but very well done.

Well during the days when Billy Hamill still rode for Smederna, Smederna made used Billy to do a radio commercial

in which he was tricked into saying, come see Smederna versus Rospiggarna, you know "the Pigs".

Smederna had him believe that we say that all the time but of course we don't. ;)

Getting an inkling i had a very minor 'tiff' recently with yourself in another thread......not sure if it may have been someone else so apologies if it wasn't...but again i'll never hesitate to commend any sports commentator on their job. It is infinitely more difficult than appears. I second your observations on Dave Goddard as he seems to have absolutely ZERO communication with the providers of the feed from Sweden. Premier Sports must surely pay a reasonable fee yet apparently they get no updates from the track regards rider changes etc. Whilst i dislike certain commentators for their style i know i certainly couldn't cope with people talking into my ear (and having to take full note and usually acting upon what they are saying) whilst commentating on the race and taking into account changing scenarios and state of the meeting etc. So full credit where it's due to all commentators. Finally, whilst on my soapbox, fans often complain about repetitive phrases used, well i'd suggest record yourself over a meeting or two and see how quickly and how many phrases you'd end up using lol.

Talking of yanks racing in Sweden I remember at the 1982 Intercontinental Final at Vetlanda (where I got the story about Njud) that the much-missed Kelly Moran was accidentally referred throughout the meeting as 'Kelly Moron'. Makes you realise how brave Greg Hancock was to set up home over there....
