cityrebel
this coming monday sees the kent laurels being staged at central park. ironically the laurels was the first meeting i ever went to at wimbledon in 1968 and also the last in 2005. the kent variety will be the first meeting i've missed at central park this season. my days of going to individual meetings are long gone, apart from special one off events like the british gp or the rico memorial.

Guest
The Laurels started at Wimbledon in 1939 when it was won by Wilbur Lamoreaux. It resumed in 1946 as a pairs event when the winners were Tommy Price and Bob Wells, but reverted to individual status in 1947 when Vic Duggan was the winner. In that time some of the sport's greatest names of the post-war era won the event. It carried on regularly until Wimbledon's closure in 1991 and resumed again at Conference League level between 2002-05 when Wayne Barrett and Mark Burrows were winners. spinkox
And - Does that fantastic original trophy from the Wimbledon days still exist??
Shadders
Sounds like a good meeting and a fitting finale. Hard on Boxall after being unbeaten in the qualifiers, but thems the rules. I'm not a fan of these qualifying/semi meetings. The best rider on the night doesn't always win. Congratulations to Simon Lambert Edited July 2, 2013 by Shadders

speedwaysliders
Can anymore please give us a mini match report of the meeting and what the crowd figure was like. Thanks in advance
blueherb777
Weather was fine, bright, warm.Heat 1 Chris Schramm looked good and seemed to have a point to prove.Heat 2 Boxall clear as normal in good time 59.4.Next few Heats Lambert,Lykke showed they would be contenders.Heat 6 Boxall excellent time of 58.5.Worrall strugging a bit (like when I watched him at Mildenhall previous day-lead a couple of times but lost it on bend 3)and needs a bit of confidence.Kirby,Woods found it hard against some very good riders.Boxall straight to Final with Max and also to Final Lykke.1st Semi Hopwood took advantage of Schramms engine gremlins.2nd Semi Lambert showed he would be a contender.Best race of the night saved for the Grand Final - Boxall gated,Lambert/Lykee pass Boxall, but Boxall re-passes Lykke and goes in pursuit of Lambert but just could not find a way past the clever riding Lambert.Roger Cearns Owner/Promoter presents the Trophy next to a bike from the Ist Laurels meeting in 1953.Crowd was about the same as last few meetings, but hard to give a figure as there are bars/eating places in the stands. Parsloes 1928 nearly
Gustix, Let me explain!! The first Laurels to be combined with the WJ Cearns Trophy WAS in 1953. Since 1953 the Laurels has been known always as the Laurels for the WJ Cearns Trophy - THAT'S the significance of the Diamond Anniversary celebrated this year. This article tells us more: http://www.kentkings.co/news/2013/june/20130625.html A good writer - especially considering he's not been on a bus in Streatham for many a long year now!! This article tells us more: http://www.kentkings...e/20130625.html A good writer - especially considering he's not been on a bus in Streatham for many a long year now!! I have read the article on the Kent Kings website and seen how it links to WJ Cearns and The Laurels at Wimbledon from 1953 onwards. However, there are several history sites including http://www.speedwayc...cal-helmets.php that trace the event back to 1939. What significance then do winners prior to 1953 that these sites recognise have in regard to the competition now? These winners are among the recognised greatest ever speedway riders. Are they in future to be ignored as winners of The Laurels? Are these sites to "correct" their list of Laurels winners?
