Scunthorpe Scorpions V Glasgow Tigers (premier League) - Friday, June 28th (7.30pm)

CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS!

HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions are looking to build on the momentum of last week’s big win against Sheffield, as they host Glasgow Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm), in what is a clash between the last two teams to win the Premier League championship.

Glasgow were the runaway winners of the Premier League in 2011, before Scunthorpe succeeded the Tigers as champions last season (2012).

Under a new promotion led by Alun Biggart, it’s been a tricky start to the 2013 season for the Glasgow Tigers, even more so than the Scorpions. The Tigers have scored just five points from 10 Premier League matches, and recently have brought in experienced Andre Compton and Dane Jonas Raun to bolster their squad.

While the Tigers have been ringing the changes, Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey has shelved any current plans to make changes to his side.

Last week’s 63-31 thumping of Sheffield put an end to a run of five successive defeats for the Scorpions and saw Dane Thomas Jørgensen making a return from a shoulder injury much earlier than had been anticipated.

Both Jørgensen and Ashley Birks stormed to paid maximums – Birks’ first for the club at Premier League level, and Jørgensen’s first in British Speedway altogether.

Godfrey said: “It’s no secret that we were contemplating team changes. But three things happened last week.

“Firstly, Thomas Jørgensen came back from injury much sooner that we first thought. We’d really been struggling using rider replacement for Thomas – it just didn’t work.

“Secondly, we suffered a rain off at Sheffield on Thursday (our fourth away league match) which meant our plans had to change.

“And lastly, I issued a challenge to the lads before the meeting last Friday to show me what they could do. They responded absolutely superbly to that, with the kind of all-round team performance that became our trademark last season.

“One swallow does not make a summer, but it was enough to convince me that we’ve now turned the corner.”

Godfrey refuses to be complacent about Friday’s meeting.

He said: “We can’t rest on our laurels. Glasgow won’t just roll over – they’ve got some quality performers. Joe Screen may be in the final year of his career, but he is a class act.

“They’ve also now got Andre Compton in their team.

“He came out of retirement for a day to ride in David Howe’s Testimonial at the Eddie Wright Raceway in May. He looked good in that, scoring seven points, and decided he wanted to come back full-time. Andre can be a handful around our place.

“However I would be disappointed if we didn’t come out of Friday’s meeting with all three league points. If we race to our capabilities, I see no reason why we can’t send a second successive set of Tigers packing”, Godfrey concluded.

Any of the Glasgow faithful travelling down for this?

Will be leaving Oxford at around 3pm, trying to dodge the Silverstone traffic.

One of my favourite riders big Joe,been great for speedway and class act,but really didn't look like he wanted to be there this evening

I didn't like to see it either.... Seemed a sad end to a great rider

I'm sorry to hear that Montie. Particularly loved watching Joe in the early 90's at Belle Vue & later on at Bradford - leg back, real stylist. Absolute respect for the guy, hope he stays around the sport, as the likes of Craig Cook & Richie Worrall would surely benefit from the input/experience of a guy like him i.e seen it/done it/got tshirt.

Would have loved to have seen the mid 1990's Joe fly round the current Scunny track! :approve:

Screen v Henka Gustafsson, both of around '92 vintage around the EWR would have been awesome!

Very entertaining meeting yesterday. Still not sure how Josh got through the middle of Joe Screen and James Grieves as they were team riding in Heat 13 - awesome ride. And not sure how Tommy The Gun stayed on his bike, he literally bounced off the air fence in Heat 6.

Fantastic for Lewis Blackbird to get his first paid max. And boy, Ashley Birks is on fire at the moment. :t:

Credit to the boys who prepared the track, cos there was a lot of rain to contend with. Some breathtaking passes by Auty, Blackbird & Birks. Am I the only one who thought that Howe caused Douglas to fall & should have been excluded rather than Douglas ?

Seemed a carbon copy of last week when David was excluded,at first I thought it was all four back but was a bit shocked when Douglas was excluded

Well I predicted Ash to be Captain Birks again. I now predict David Howe will leave Scunthorpe before this season ends. Blatently took out his team mate two weeks running, not looking where he was going-hope he gave Ryan the 3 points money he robbed for that heat!.
