G.p In The U.s.a 2014

THINK Monster (based in California) might have a bigger influence than Red Bull sponsored riders... plus, as stated, relatively easy journey from Auckland. Direct flight around 11 hours.

True Phil, but Red Bull are also heavily involved in the Supercross series, Even though Monster are (were!??) the main sponsors. I'm just suggesting they should at least approach the stadium and see what their feedback would be.

There's a plethora of other reasons I could go into as to why NY is a good option but I am too tired to go into them now!

Plus there's a boat load of Poles in NJ. The heavyweight boxer Tomasz Adamek fights almost exclusively at the Prudential Centre in Newark (right by Red Bull arena) and fills the place every fight. I'm sure a god few of them could be sold on going to see Gollob, Hampel & co

How many Poles are really interested in speedway though? I've met very few outside of speedway circles, and whilst speedway is well supported in some parts of Poland, that support seems to be very localised.

Poles are also too busy working to waste their money on leisure activities.

Ok I won't bite on that one

Seems odd to suggest holding it at the HD Stadium given its main tenant, LA Galaxy start their Soccer season in February. That said apparently the stadium has been used for the X Games.

How long to BSI need the stadium? A week? Then how long to put the pitch back down? Looking at the Galaxies fixtures int he past they have often had 2-3 week breaks at home so if the deal was right they'd surely take it?

HA is correct. Ask a random Pole about speedway and they sometime know of Gollob but thats about it. Speedway in Poland is very regionalised, seems it's big int he speedway towns/cities but outside that, really no more than here.

They get 2,000-10,000 for their league meetings, don't fool yourself into thinking thats a LOT of people, 3 or 4 times that would be a lot.

Commentators wittering on that speedway is most popular sport in Poland doesn't make it so. Football still attracts far more fans in aggregate terms, and I'd suggest there's wider interest in basketball than speedway as well

Speedway draws reasonable attendances in certain parts of Poland (and good by the standards of speedway), but only in certain parts. It's a bit like rugby league in England - popular in Lancashire and Yorkshire, but not much interest elsewhere in the country.

Paul Bellamy said at Methanol Club at Cardiff that USA was looking 50/50 as struggling to find a date for the stadium that would fit in. He said a GP in Melbourne, Australia at the Etihad Stadium was looking more likely as the guy in charge of that stadium use to be in charge of Millenium Stadium.

Except there's a second Soccer team who play there as well - Chivas.

True sir, but from the many GPs I've seen & as I said about the numbers they come out in for the boxing, I'm confident that a large number of Poles could be attracted to the event. Plus, Manhattan/Jersey is a fairly big catchment area to attract people to come from all nationalities!

It's academic, it won't ever be on the East coast, I just wish BSI would broden their horizons a bit more. Not a dig, I love the SGPs btw...

This weekend for the first time in almost 13 years the USA has a race on an FIM sized track at Ventura for Round 1 of the AMA National Series. All of the top domestic based USA riders will be there on a track which staged Speedway weekly until 1987 and held the American final in 1994. The track is around 300 meters and is KIng's Lynn / Bradford ish in shape. Not sure the stadium is suitable for a GP but a race on such a track is a step in the right direction. The Monster Invitational race last December got an estimated 6,500 fans between Xmas and New Year, though the tickets were prices at $18 a head, an unviable amount for a GP. Given that 90% of US Speedway Activity is in California and 75% of that in Southern California, a venue in LA or around is the logical choice.

Surely to God they wouldn't ever consider staging a GP on the freak toy tracks such as Costa Mesa*? It would be like holding the FA Cup final on a five-a-side pitch or the Super Bowl on an Arena Football field.

*(no offence to the decades of enjoyment CM has provided but it's not speedway, and no i'm not claiming my own home track Belle Vue is either lol)

Costa Mesa is not FIM sized as are none of the weekly USA tracks.

Hopefully in a world where money counts above all there would not be an exception made.

Incidentally, is there room for Costa Mesa to ever be converted into a full-sized track? Or is it's uniqueness something sacrosanct and the promoters or fans would not entertain the idea of it being changed?

As for the other weekly tracks why are they built so small? America isn't exactly short of land mass and surely in a lot of cases there would be no restriction to having built a large track from scratch?

The tradition of British tracks is inside greyhound tracks, the tradition of American ones is US rodeo arenas. Bigger tracks like Venura are car tracks that need a lot work done to them to make them ready for a Speedway race.

Not within the stadium itself, although there's theoretically plenty of space around it. The stadium is situated in the corner of a big showground.

That's never stopped the FIM. They've progressively made the permitted dimensions shorter and longer to accommodate GPs, and I'd imagine if Costa Mesa were daft enough to put up the asking fee, BSI (erm.. I mean the FIM) would find a way of accommodating it.

If you can host a 'longtrack' on a normal speedway track these days, then clearly anything goes...

A true World Champion should be able to win on all track sizes ;)
