Making Up The Numbers .its Getting A Joke Now!

Recommended Posts

Good luck to Kevin Doolan about getting guest bookings, but its getting beyond a joke now,so far this season Doolan has rode for ...........

Eastbourne x2

King Lynn

Berwick

Redcar

Scunthorpe

The next time a promoter says the attendances are down, they should take a look at whats happening in this sport. How can you try to bring new fans in,and try to explain whats happening and encourage them, when the powers that be are making a joke of the sport, also the double up rider replacement rule in the elite league is even more of a joke, try telling someone new that the rider is riding on the same night for another club, and see the look on their faces. Also the upcoming attractive Eastbourne v Poole match this week has been reduced to a farce with Poole turning up with 3 guest riders!!! would Matt ford have called the match off if it was there home fixture, like he did a few weeks back when he said quote "i dont want to cheat the paying public" !!! but hes sending a team to Eaastbourne who themselves have injury problems that doesnt look like anything Poole have put out this year. You couldnt make it up

And your fully thought out solution is what.

I tried this in my business, the other week.

A customer came back with a grotesquely faulty product I was producing.

He said 'This product is crap, it's not fit for purpose; it is so bad it is almost laughable'

My reply was along your lines 'And you're fully thought out solution is what?'

I still cannot walk properly after the custumer took this as a signal to ram the said faulty product right up my backside.

I cannot work out where I went wrong.

well it's obviously to leave everything 'as is' ..

as it is working so well for the credibility of the sport isnt it?

Tsunami is part of the "establishment" if you like. With his sort of joined up thinking is it not obvious why the sport is going downhill

i agree, it is out of control ,fans cant associate with their team because they dont know who is going to be riding the next match. injuries cant be helped but other reasons for riders missing is not acceptable to british fans .

You all ignore the fact that it was only about 2 months ago that someone started an almost identical thread on here, and at the end of it it was almost unanimous that the Guests system was the best anybody could come up with in the present circumstances.

Thanks for all your snide remarks especially the usual insult from Oldace, the non attending speedway fan. :D

It could have been so useful for you all to come up with solutions that might stand a chance of success. Nah mind eh, best get ya moan in.

In fairness to Tsunami, I was looking through a Hackney website recently and I found a section with some of Len Silver's programme notes from 1968 in Len which was complaining about guest riders. In the 45 years since those notes were written nobody seems to have come up with a solution so it might be an idea if the "you couldn't make it up" brigade apply there minds to it and let us know what the answer is. I'd love to see an alternative to the guest rider problem but I can't think of one so I await others suggestions with interest.

squad system of some description to completely replace the guest , yes there are issues with a squad system but nothing can be as bad as guests

But who do Coventry get as a squad rider to replace Nicholls and KK? Now what about the other 9 teams? you'd need about 10 7.5+ riders. Then what about replacing reserves? There is already a lack of 3-5 point men so PL double uppers are used and when #8s were tried, it failed.

You can't say replace Holder with a junior, as taking away Holders 15 form the teams total of 50 and adding a 3 point juniors 3 points results in score of 38. And away rather than scoring 40 the team would do well to his 30, it would mean home loses and big home wins.Teams need to win at home to stay in business, it's not good for teams to know they're going to lose at home every week. Speedway actually needs some sort of mechanism to ensure teams are more likely to win at home, if the 95% of fans who only ever see home meetings saw a win every week crowds would be much bigger IMO.

Sadly, guests are a necessary evil.

I would like guest riders to be limited to the number 1 only. Rider replacement for the other 2 heat leaders and then a squad system for the other 5 places between say a squad of 8. Throughout the season each squad member must be used a minimum of 4 or 5 times.

All squad members can double down with a PL team. Won't eliminate guests but would restrict them to just make sure the team is competitive.

Guest riders have been around for over 40 years so to use that as the excuse for I don't go anymore is being convenient. A lot of fans of many sports come and go, I used to watch a lot of football, but I don't now. There is no particular reason, I just don't enjoy it as much. I certainly don't go on a Football forum blaming it on foreign players, squad systems, etc

I'm sorry but guests in speedway are way down the list of reasons why the sport is in decline.

try...

1. Poor value for money

2. Meetings strung out and taking far too long

3. Poor stadium facilities

4. Other cheaper and more attractive forms of entertainment

5. Poor racing, usually caused by poor track prep.

Have a go at getting those five right and we might have half a chance.

yes those 5 are right but as an example of where it is the guest situation is swindon have to go to coventry this week with one swindon rider and 5guests and RR , what swindon fan is going to pay to watch that and for that matter what coventry fan would want to watch that and that is totaly the guest problem not the 5 you state above

I remember Leicester causing outrage in the mid 70s when they turned up for a British League match with only one of their own riders (Doug Underwood, I think), so this is nothing new, but it does seem to be getting out of hand. Watching EL matches on TV this season would be a bit embarrassing if it wasn't for the fact I watch them on my own. The number of riders who are not only guesting, but doubling up, doubling down, doubling sideways has made a mockery of teams. We may as well have a list of available riders and stage a weekly auction for the promoters.

Guests will always be a part of speedway - at least until a genuine squad system is introduced - but what is depressing is the fact it now seems normal for EL teams to turn up with only four or five of their own riders.

For example, the Eastbourne v Wolves match went ahead with only nine out of 14 team places filled will full-time riders from Eagles or Wolves (seven if you take out two double-downers in the Wolves side). And that was a very long way from being the worst example.

Blazeaway is dead right that there are more fundamental problems facing the sport, but to regain credibility there has to be a tighter rein on guests and doubling up.

I'm not really too upset about the current situation with guests, but then I'm not a particularly partisan supporter (although I do follow Sheffield mostly).

To a large degree, I quite like to have the opportunity to see a selection of different rider's in action.

That's just my view, and I do see that it would be unpalatable to some people.

But even a squad system of 10 riders wouldnt solve this particular situation. It is close to a unique position.
