Latvia Or Slovenia ? Advice Please

Recommended Posts

A lucky friend of mine (good job there isn't a jealousy emoticon :D) has been offered, for his birthday, either a trip to Latvia or Slovenia for the respective GP's.

I would be very grateful if anyone could offer information about:-

1. The quality of racing at the two venues, Daugavpils and Krsko

2. Qualities about the two countries, which is nicer to visit ?

3. The relative cost of food and drink in both countries, bearing in mind one has it's own currency, the Lat and the

other has the Euro.

In other words which one should he choose?

No argument is has to be Slovenia on all counts-been to Krsko however i haven`t been to Latvia, but The racing i believe is better in krsko-last time i was there the rain spoilt a cracking GP.Also in Slovenia is Lake Bled and some marvellous caves called the Postojna.

KRSKO much easier to get to as well. Only about half an hour from Zagreb (it is almost on the Croatia/Slovenia border) or 100 ks from Ljubljana. Lake Bled is delightful, countryside very much like Italy. Nice country, nice people. Not much in Krsko itself.

Daugavpils is a three to four hour drive from Riga, almost on the Russian border. Quite isolated but cheap.

Racing wise would also go for Slovenia.

Slovenia :approve:

Very scenic country, nice people, great food. Takes some beating on all counts.

Hire a car visit the country, stay in Ljubliana or Maribor. (Nice bars, restaurants and good saturday morning markets in both).

Good big track at Krysko, banked viewing all round. Avoid expensive main stand and sit on banking at turn 1 or back straight-loads of atmosphere.

That's only my recommendation but i don't think that your friend will be disappointed.

Hi, I am from Krško. I can recommend you to sleep at Terme čatež, it is about 20 km from Krško, cca 40 km from Zagreb. Relaxing at pools, wellness etc. Just drive out for many good and cheaper restaurants with authentic food and very good wines.

or even better

Plenty of things to do around Krško :

Slovenia is small so you can do a day or 2 day trip to lake Bled or Postojna cave, about 2 hr drive from Krško

or

You can also do a day trip to Zagreb, about 40 km from Krško, capitol of Croatia.

Enjoy.

It really depends upon what 'floats your boat'. I went to Latvia a few years ago and had a great time - I got a coach from Riga (which is a lovely city) but Latvia itself is very rural and not at all like the UK outside of the capital. Daugavpils was also nice and is very cheap - the stadium offers decent viewing and the racing wasn't too bad.

I have spent a lot of time in Latvia. Riga is a very nice capital city, but nothing much happens outside of it. Duagavpils (where the GP is) is about a 3 hour drive from Riga. It is Latvia's 2nd biggest city and is on the other side of the country. Daugavpils is basically a city being dragged kicking and screaming out of the Soviet era. It is inhabited by 90% Russians hardly anyone speaks Latvian, it is dull and grey and all the roads are straight and dimly lit and night. But I found it culturally interesting. However the rough guide to Latvia described it as a 'pathetic excuse for a tourist destination'.

good luck
