speedway_dan
British speedway is a complete farce. Tonight's live fiasco regarding the ridiculous double points and rider replacement/guest facility just make the sport look Mickey Mouse Both want ending immediately - time for a squad system in the elite league.
SCB
What guest? As for squad, who do you suggest Coventry sign as back up for KK, Scott, Zengotta, Allen and Robbo? They'd need 7 squad members, as would every other EL team, where do you propose 140ish riders come from?
foamfence
What spoilt it for me was Robson insisting he was being treated unfairly and every time you could plainly see him drop the clutch before the tapes moved.
Boobs
The awful thing last night was the attendance. Lovely night, home team going well on a good track situated in the most densely populated area in the nation, and just a few hundred people watching. In the Sky Sports Elite League. Just two weeks earlier, again live on Sky Sports, Berwick (in a coastal area with no big towns or cities withing fifty miles) appeared to have had at least four or five times more people in their stadium for a match in the Premier League. Discuss? Have to agree about the attendance. I was genuinely shocked at how few there were at the track, regardless of it being on the box. The match at Berwick was likely to be a one off and as such a novelty, and the management (to their great credit) really made the most of it. Cheap entry, posters everywhere (some as many as 25 miles away) and bulling up the fact that it was a TV match. To be fair, in the same circumstances I suspect Lakeside's promotion would have done the same and had the same reward. As it was, they couldn't. Discuss? the crowds have gone down at lakeside this season. i think the club is suffering on three fronts. firstly i think there is still a hangover from the tragic death of lee richardson, secondly we are living in hard times and some fans just can't afford speedway anymore and lastly the new track opening at central park will have taken some fans away that live south of the river. i'm a regular at arena that rarely misses a meeting, yet i went to kent kings last night. good facilities and better value for money made it an easy decision for me, and quite a few more lakeside regulars that i saw there. More people on their regular race night won't want to miss the World Champ and Leigh Lanham! Factually correct. But the tenner-on-Friday offer just didn't work, did it? £17 on Friday or £27 for Monday & Friday .... The fare on offer last night was never going to persuade many to take that 'special deal'. The Doctor...
What spoilt it for me was Robson insisting he was being treated unfairly and every time you could plainly see him drop the clutch before the tapes moved. Agree totally. It was cringeworthy how after his heat 3 exclusion, he kept going on about admittedly jumping the start the first time, but thought he did nothing wrong the second time! The man is either utterly deluded or has got a medical condition affecting his memory. Or he's just a cheat... who knows.. Regardless, a pathetic spectacle from an experienced rider. Discuss? A meeting properly promoted,as has already been mentioned, posters, banners, reduced admission, free admission in some cases all helped to reward Berwick Speedway with a decent crowd, trick for the Berwick promotion now is to continue the promotional work for every meeting that guarantees as many of those fans who were there for the Sky meeting return time and time again.
guitar_art
I don't buy this "unfair on Coventry" crap that Nigel P and Kelvin T was spouting. The simple truth is when you set up a team you take a gamble. If you have two hard hitters and one of them gets injured you are going to find it difficult to cover for them, particularly if its your second in the averages. That's the gamble you take. Something that Wolves also are going to find difficult. On the other hand you can build a team such as Birmingham with strength all the way through, this way you may find it easier to cover injuries but run the risk of opposing teams big hitters running riot and taking the match of you. As in all things getting the balance right is key. That is speedway. As for squad systems. On the face of it, it sounds good. But would, in my opinion play into the hands of the richer clubs and leave clubs such as Birmingham unable to compete. The devil would be in the detail.

It will be interesting to see what impact that meeting has on the Berwick croŵds for the rest of the season, certainly we're not great before the Sky fixture, they went out there way to make it a success here is hoping it has had the desired effect for the rest of the season. Attendances appeared to have dropped at a number of tracks this season if what you read is correct.

speedway_dan
To be honest the whole affair came across on the TV as utter nonsense. The tactical rule farce is a complete joke any would be potential fans watching for the first time on live TV must just wonder what the hell is going on - even Havvy and the Coventry management didn't know who could take the ride. My point is the rule is ridiculous and makes me cringe. Surely in no other sport or serious competitive competition is a rival given a helping hand when losing. It's Mickey Mouse stuff - simple as that and that includes tac subs, golden jokers or what ever else they wish to call it. I'm a big believer that we need a squad system in place in the Elite at least. Guests and rider replacement is just not acceptable in a team competition when you expect riders associated with your team to be racing. Sweden seem to manage it or have in the past and it seems there speedway is a tad healthier than ours. Try being a neutral - a new viewer - a first timer - it's all a puzzle and about as easy to follow as underwater chess!!!
Fromafar
Team speedway these days is just Home Team Select v Away Team Select and IMO is the one of the main reasons fans are deserting the sport. Different riders every season for no other reason than Averages is wrong .
manchesterpaul
Simple FREE entry - get fans in - looks good for TV - supporters will still buy programmes/food/drink/merchandise.And maybe if Speedway is good will come back. Asked before many times and nobody has come up with an answer.....does the money Sky give for a televised meeting cover the income from the usual attendance receipts for the match? If so for many reasons i've mentioned before including the above they should give free entry or a maximum cost of £5 (other sports have done that and been rewarded well). Sadly, i'm fearing that the Sky money is entirely needed to keep clubs afloat and they can't afford to have a drop in gate income, albeit most televised matches seem to have lowest crowds of the season. rob tatum
Speedway dan and fromafar great posts agree with everything you say. Me and the wife and our 3 friends haven't been to a single league match this season the reasons are :- too expensive ,taken for granted ,complex rules and takes far too long. We decided to club all our money together and have attended cardiff and will be attending copenhagen and torun GPs instead. I am a fan of 38 yrs its my choice but there an exciting event and league racing has become In our opinion a shambles.
