British GP 2013

your easy pleased then, it cost me best part of £700 quid all in to go to Cardiff, the worst bit about it was the racing.... Now if they expect you to pay top dollar to support the event then at least they should get their end right.. No excuses!!

It will get less and less each year if they don't do something about the extortionate cost aswell. I thought the way the riders were introduced was very good.... But overall it wasnt up to much as a spectacle IMO.

£700? that for a small party? if that was just your cost, I think you have been ripped off somewhere.

It is a shame that the track is the talking point and if did look very sandy looking, although as others have pointed out that the 2007 was really rutty and made for intresting racing. Poole have suffered with there track recently and that's after work over the winter, not like Cardiff that has a handful of days. I am sure this will not happen again as any man made tracks will be under the spotlight after years of us just expecting an acceptable race track.

Dunno how much I spent this weekend on a top hotel, top price tickets and loads of food and drink, but I can afford it, so what the hell. Some people prefer the cheap option, turn up on the day and buy the cheaper tickets, that's their choice. To me, as a fan of team speedway, the meeting itself is secondary. What's more important is the social aspect of speedway, always has been. Nothing better than meeting up with speedway mates you only see once or twice a year for a good chat and a laugh. This year ranks as one of the best in that aspect, especially Saturday night/Sunday morning in the casino with some drunk mates. That'll live long in the memory.

Well it's all subjective I suppose. But my post earlier shows there was plenty of 'racing' with passes in almost each heat.

 

But you talk about extortionate cost and then say you spent 700 quid! Well two of us took in the pairs at Somerset, a hotel room, a day in Cardiff and the GP and probably spent around a quarter of that. Including food, accommodation and petrol.

 

That's the thing. BSI don't expect you to pay top dollar. The cheapest ticket at Cardiff is £29. Did I get value for money for my £29? Absolutely. I think Cardiff is excellent value when compared to other speedway events. The Premier League Pairs, to watch Premier League standard riders in a stadium which cannot begin to compare to Cardiff, was £20. And, whilst others may beg to differ, I thought the Pairs was a poor meeting this year compared to those I have seen before. The ELRC, at Swindon, is £25. To stand on a grass bank, open to the elements, in October! A seat, in the Millennium Stadium, to watch an 'event' rather than just a speedway meeting, is only £4 more!

 

If people chose to spend £29 or £200 on their ticket for Cardiff, they are going to see the same meeting. And we all know, even with perfect track conditions, you can never guarantee a classic meeting.

The difference is grass bank open? you will now and again see decent racing has Cardiff,s racing ever been that good not really average at best and it isn't cheap either.

Haven't seen the incident on the TV at home but I thought the track more than Freddie was responsible for the crash. And Vaculik should have gone with Tai - crashes independently IMO. Two man rerun with Freddie and Nicki would have been my decision. Would like to have seen KK ride full four laps around the outside in the final. Could only have cost him one point at most and seemed faster than Emil. Thought he (KK) had the best package of gating and top end speed throughout the meeting. Hadn,t gone since Bomber's win and thought racing wasn't that good.

Track wasn't best but wasn't worst Cardiff track. Also this happens on permanent tracks also. Torun in 2010 had a rut on bends 3&4 causing crashes for Holder & Mroczka. Hancock's bike clipped Bjerre in the head at GP in Krsko again caused by rut

I've been to Swindon on the Thursday before the GP weekend in 2011 for Steve Johnsons Testimonial & in 2012 for the EL meeting with Poole, both disappointing meetings. This year we gave it a miss, luckily it turns out, as it was rained off

But if it was Tai coming up the inside Freddie would have taken a dive/ faked it/ bottled it/ couldn't handle it/ etc etc. Wrong call, Tao was at fault.

 

Oh give it a rest please, I've read your opinion on the Freddie/Tai incident for pages now and I'm only up to 3:59 1st June 2013..(many pages to go yet no doubt)..

 

We watched it live on Eurosport last night and one camera angle clearly shows the contact Freddie made on Tai..

 

I would suggest that you should be more concerned about the state of the track last night....it was a disgrace...

 

BTW...I guess ultimately you will be far more concerned about the huge numbers of retired English heading your way over the next few years :wink:

The track did play a major part of the meeting, and it was disappointing given the improvement there has been in the made tracks at Cardiff in the last 3 to 4 years. One has come to expect it getting better year on year, but it didn't happen this year. Heard from a few officials involved and the story is very consistent. Usual shale under tarpaulins, and a lot of rain collected on the top of them. Tarpaulins removed, but pool of rain goes into the shale instead of being drained off. Track laid, but too high a water content so a lot of lime is mixed in, track relayed, but lime does not work as planned. Rollers used to compress it, but after the practice was delayed for an hour, the riders ride and the riders were not impressed with it, AJ crashing heavily into airfence coming out of the forth bend. Practice cancelled and track dug up and relayed over night in time for the revised practice at 10pm. Meeting was always going to be on, as they had all the time till 5pm to do anything that needed further to be done. Serious error in materials control, which i imagine will not be allowed to happen again. Did it spoil the meeting. Well it did affect the meeting, but it can't be said it was truly dangerous and unrideble, but care needed to be exercised to keep off certain lines, especially the inner metre going into the first bend. Never a good sign seeing small sand large road rollers, when they are only there to build the track not to prepare the track either before or during the meeting.

There really is no right answer to the Lindgren/Tai crash. In real time it looked certain that Tai had picked up grip and drove into Nicki. Replay showed that Freddie steamed in, and Tai only lifted when Freddie appeared to give him a little push. Either Exclusion was going to be wrong or right in peoples minds, but Vaculik should be commended for seeing what was going to happen, and doing an early off to limit the damage that was going to happen. He was never going to be excluded for his evasive actions.

Very unfortunate now that the battle of the youngsters is not now an event with both Darcy and Tai now out for some time out. Thank goodness for Emil, who was not noticeable during the meeting, but came good at the end. Shame about Nicki who seems to now be considering have time out to allow his body to heal before making a return in a months time. Now got a sprained wrist, on top of his broken arm, and it was no wonder the tough guy had to quit during his last race when he found he just could not carry on. Tai it would seem has not just broken collarbone but a shattered shoulder blade, presumably when the bike hit him when he was against the fence, and is now to go under surgery either today or tomorrow.

Anybody thinking Tai seems to be targeting NIcki in recent crashes is obviously looney, and will probably be voting for Scotland to leave the union in the future referendum.

On the numbers, it did look like a reasonable increase this year with many more people in the upper stands on the back straight , but a few less in the mid tiers on the 3/4th bends.

Overall, the weekend was good, with decent weather, good company, OK meeting, and the usual magic which is there every Cardiff GP. Be there again next year, when for sure the track, will be the best it has been. I am sure of that.

 

Looking forward to seeing the recording tomorrow, to see what the stop at homes saw on the night.

we think cook is very good but he looked like he was on a moped the way he got passed...completely outclassed and just shows how far we are behind everyone in the uk these days. He's a biggish fish in a small pond at the moment and that is all.

 

I agree with the big fish bit, personally I think Cook is doing a year too many in the PL but to judge him on last night on such a gash track is harsh, there is no way he was giving it 100% and I don't blame him one bit for that.

So the shale is not kept in a 'climate controlled facility' at all?

 

It still depends on how you take the tarpaulins off when there is pools of rain on them, or so I am told.
