Could A Barry Hearn Type Be Good For Speedway?

Recommended Posts

When Hearne has got involved in team sport what has he achieved? I don't see Leyton Orient being held up as some sort of example in the World of football. Let him stick to his niche, pub games.

Leyton Orient are a fantastically ran football team who most clubs in League 1 would love to be ran like....within their means as well...

A solitary figure like Hearn couldn't run speedway though at league level...there are too many promoters with self interest in their own teams and if its their money invested then you cannot blame them....unless one man took over the running and had responsibility for every club then it couldn't happen

A figure like Hearn could take over the GP's though and that could work..the only way it could work is on the individual side of things....far too many complications and self interest to make it happen at team level

We don't want any trouble at The Abbey sid, speedway is a family sport! You could be the recipient of the sports first banning order! ;)

I don't see why you'd need a "supremo" type figure, but I've always wondered why promoters don't employ a marketing company to re-brand, re-launch and promote British speedway as a whole.

You could even share the "profits" with them to reduce the up-front costs and give them some incentive to succeed.

Been tried a few times Matt, and never really came up with anything except big bills.

Depends who were employed... I always seem to get the impression jobs in speedway are given to 'mates', rather than spend a little company's that could make a real difference, experts in marketing.

Done that, good CV and good presentation but virtually nothing came out of it.

Speedway is a great sport, that sometimes shoots itself in the foot, what it needs as a supremo, if need be from outside the sport to grab it by the neck and say what needs to be done and how to implament it.

The problem is not the basic product, ie: four guys roaring round a track its presentaion publicity etc.

Speedway had the opportunity to appoint (and in fact did for a short while) a supremo in the form of the late John Berry. As a very successful former promoter JB had the opportunity to take the sport forward.

However the BSPA then, as it is now, is populated by tragic individuals who are / were more interested in their own pathetic self interest rather than for the good of the sport. Consequently JB was not given the power / authority to do the job he was appointed to do, and as result left.

I have long since argued that for speedway to survive and hopefully prosper, is for the sport to be run on a franchise model. One company owning all the riders contracts, and then loaning them out to the individual promotions.

It will never happen of course.

A 'Barry Hearn' type could do nothing to halt the decline, speedway is struggling to keep existing fans, it has no chance of attracting new ones. Lets face it, speedway can be a very boring with too many follow the leader races, poor stadia, 2hours plus to run 15 heats. Kids find this dull, and who can blame them in this digital age. The sport needs paying customers to survive, so it appears the writing is on the wall.

Unfortunately, these old codgers are part of the problem, not the solution.

I do wonder if the resistance to appoint anyone from outside of speedway is in case they suggest sweeping away all of the hangers-on.

Certainly you are right Matt about the last bit,how many people get Freebies at Swindon?Hearn as a bloke i am not keen on to much of a dictator snooker certainly is not in total great shape. People at the top earn good money people at the bottom struggling speedway missed a trick with the great John Berry.

They certainly did sidney. A great opportunity missed and, sadly, no longer possible. I think John would have sorted them out - perhaps that is what they were afraid of.

Shame really.

Spot on John had the knowledge and personality he was the boy, also Ian Thomas , Adams ,and Booey are example,s mega speedway men had so much to offer such a shame that's life i suppose.

Personally I believe it needs to be driven by someone who is green to the sport, but likes and enjoys what they see.

Someone who is able to "blue sky" and mould the sport into something that the public is prepared to pay to watch. Or grab that elusive corporate money to subsidise admission prices.

Hold on a minute. Haven't those people been heavily involved in the speedway over the last 20 years, precisely the time when speedway has been in decline?
