Coventry Stadium

Recommended Posts

Coventry City FC, in the form of Tim Fisher, have stated they will not be playing at the Ricoh Arena next season but will ground share while they take 3 tears to build a new Stadium in the Coventry area. It would appear from talk on the Sky Blue forum that Brandon Stadium is the favorite location for the new Football Stadium.

Anyone know any facts?

There will be tears if Brandon is sold.

Coventry City only moved from Highfield Road about 6 or 7 years ago. The only reason they might not be playing at the Ricoh is that they're skint and can't afford the rent.

Threats to play elsewhere are surely just threats, since the Ricoh Arena would probably be in trouble without a big Football Club as tenant. Presumably some compromise will have to be made.

But if Coventry did move out of the Ricoh, isn't Rushden & Diamonds old stadium the likely option?

Think Walsall was the latest place to be mentioned, not sure what happened to the Rushden & Diamonds stadium rumours. Can't see a move, at least out of Coventry, happening though surely? Even if they do move out of the Ricoh then it'll probably be to the Butts Park Arena, although Brandon is better geared up for big football crowds.

There have been rumours for a couple of months about this. I dont see the council ever giving permission to build new stands at the stadium which will have to happen to make the football league happy.

The Ricoh owners want the football club to stay at the arena but the football owners have an agenda to leave the arena and maybe the city as a whole. Hopefully a takeover will happen before anything like this happens. I dont want Sisu anywhere near my speedway or football club.

The local council wouldn't even allow a funeral directors open in the area so playing football & upto 10,000 fans driving up their road just aint goin to happen ,..EVER !!

Don't know the area, so would the Ricoh Arena be able to fit in a speedway track or would a track be allowed in that area ?

If they can't afford the rent it may be best for both to ground share with the speedway and then Sandhu can invest some money into the project out of the profits he gets from building hundreds of houses on Brandon. ..... All you need then is a new promoter !!

It's a far more complex issue than affording the rent. The owners are supposedly after a fairer rent deal. Current deal stands at 1.1 million per year, plus business rates. The council and the Higgs Trust who own ACL which is the company which runs the stadium initially would not discuss a new deal, the club stopped paying rent, it then came out we were being massively overcharged on the rates and then ACL agreed a lower amount of rent. Since then there has been claim and counterclaim to this day which currently stands at the owners are saying they cant play at the ricoh.

Surely it's not big enough for a full sized football pitch in the middle of the track?

And I'm pretty sure the football supporters won't want to look through a fence, over a dog track and over a speedway track to watch the football...

To accomodate football other ventures at Brandon Stadium would have to go. The Football League would I am certain insist on that. Speedway, stock car and greyhound supporters must ake sure it does not happen. I am sure Doug will for once agree with me on this!

I think it would be instead of it, not in addition to the track

Yes that's it! A football pitch INSTEAD of the race tracks. The Football League almost certainly would insist on that if Coventry City FC took an interest in Brandon.

this has been bubbling for a number of months on CCFC forums and was kicked off when it was suggested that Sandhu but CCFC.

its all posturing, no one even knows who owns the club anyone let alone, build a new stadium.

There are a number of football league rules around re locating a team, specifically it has to be in the same metropolitan area ( to stop Wimbledon moving to milton keynes), brandon is in Warwickshire under rugby Council not Coventry.

as has been mentioned many times it is green belt and the planning restrictions are very severe, the local shop had to switch off there illuminated board.

The biggest issue has always been the road itself, which even for houses would need to be completely re developed, so realistically thats more money than SISU have.

im not going to say never, but very unlikely....

worst case is that they buy the land bulldoze everything down and then will be refused planning..
